Achieve your goals in our Athletic & Fitness program. Our students tackle all aspects of idols sports and physical health through self-paced research and experience, graduating with the skills they need to educate others as well as themselves.

Athletics & Fitness includes the study of kinesiology, recreation and wellness, physical skill development, sports analysis, pedagogy, coaching, curriculum development and assessment, and administration of physical activity programs. The Athletics & Fitness major offers students extensive preparation in theory and methodology courses leading to research or teaching certification.
As a student in the Athletics & Fitness program, you will have countless opportunities to join forces with Promise students across many majors and clubs to analyze behavioral patterns, physical health, exercise and fitness, participate in and collaborate with sports-related clubs, and more.
Understanding the physiological responses to exercise.
Understanding how structure and anatomy affect exercise performance.
Understanding how to design exercise programs to fit multiple outcomes, such as lowering body fat and increasing muscle, strength, power and endurance.
Upon completion of the program, students will be well qualified to pursue practitioner roles in public and private organizations. These roles include employee wellness director, personal trainer, health promotions advocate, strength and conditioning specialist, cardiac rehab specialist, motion analysis technician, occupational physiologist, and human performance and sport supplement researcher.
Finally, our program curriculum and multitude of research opportunities offered by our faculty place students in a prime position to continue in graduate school to further advance their career.

MAJOR
Undergraduate students in any degree program are able to participate in undergraduate research. Several options exist to show mentored undergraduate research activity on a student’s official transcript. Those who wish to enroll in an undergraduate research course/unit should consult with their academic advisor to understand how the credit will apply towards the degree requirements. If no credit is needed, students may be eligible to enroll in the 0-credit IDS 4914 course/unit. This course/unit will not impact degree credits or GPA but will show on an official transcript and document the experience. The Office of Undergraduate Research is able to assist with further inquiries.

Athletics & Fitness students will complete four clinical experiences. The final internship consists of two courses/unit, each of 7 weeks. One will be performed at the elementary level and one at the middle or high school level. Passing grades in internship will only be possible if all sections of the Promise Certification Exam are taken and passed prior to graduation.

A part-time internship in elementary school physical education. Focus on the nature of the total elementary school curriculum, characteristics of students, and application of appropriate content and instructional competencies.

A full-day internship in middle, junior or senior high school physical education programs with focus on the implementation of appropriate content and methodology to meet the needs of secondary students.
