Stellenbosch University

Stellenbosch University (SU) is a public higher education institution in South Africa with a strong research-orientation and a student cohort of around 30,000 students. Approximately 36% of its students are at post-graduate (masters and doctoral) level. SU’s aim is to create and sustain an environment in which new knowledge can be discovered, can be shared and can be applied to the benefit of the community. The core functions of the institution – research, teaching and learning and community interaction – converge to make SU an effective role-player and participant in South Africa`s strategic priorities for the benefit of South Africa and Africa`s citizens.

SU is positioning itself as the leading research-intensive higher education institution on the African continent. The university appears amongst the top 500 universities on several global ranking lists, and is the most productive research university measured by research outputs per capita in the South African HEI landscape. The research strategy of SU articulates a clear developmental orientation in its research. Its strategic research themes align well with the strategic goals set out in the South African Medium Term Strategic Framework, as well as the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations.

SU recognizes the importance of professional management to effectively support the research endeavours of its knowledge pioneers. This has become increasingly important for successful research, particularly in the face of the competition for resources, the complexity of many scientific problems requiring inter- or transdisciplinary collaborations, dependence on expensive infrastructures, facilities, and instrumentation and the increasing demand for societal impact of research – as also specifically stated by SARIMA in its priority document for professionalization of R&I managers.

Role in project:

SU as lead applicant will carry the overall responsibility for project management and accountability, will assume the role of EU liaison, and will be the coordinator and primary communicator between all partners. A dedicated programme manager will be appointed to the project, and monthly operational project management (PM) meetings will be held and chaired by the principle investigator at SU. SU will also develop a staff exchange programme framework and establish a mentorship programme framework.
