We organized a brain battle „Maths in our life“ at our progymnasiun on March 2. Students of the 6th forms took part in it. The organizers of the brain battle were our teachers and former students who now are studying at other gymnasiums such like KTU, Saules, Jesuits or Rokai. The brain battle consisted of three rounds, there were ten questions in each. The former students prepared the tasks, hosted the event and worked in the evaluation committee. The students enjoyed the contest. The questions ere interesting. We are especially grateful to Marius Sutas, Jogile Jureviciute, Rimte Raizyte, Marijus Cvilikas, Zygimantas Krasauskas for the created questions and hosting the event.
On March 5, math teacher Danute Domskiene and geography teacher Laima Lapinskiene taught an integrated mathematics-geography lesson "Mathematical tour in Italy, Hungary, Poland, Portugal and Norway" in Grade 7a. "During the integrated lesson, students learned widely about the project Erasmus + KA2 „Let's become mathematicians, shall we?“ partners.
The first round of junior mathematicians olympiad was held in our progymnasium on the 26th of February. 38 students participated there and they had to solve 5 logic based unusual problems. The winners of the first round would participate in the second round in Kaunas city. Our school‘s participants in the competition are: Kostas Videika (5a grade), Martynas Janušaitis (6c grade), Radvilas Rumšas (7a grade), Kasparas Vaitiekus (8a grade). Congratulations and good luck in the 2nd round!
Math and Art Integrated Lesson
Primary school teacher Ausrele Vencloviene and art teacher Asta Ribikauskiene had a Math-Art integrated lesson „Geometric shapes“ on March 21. During the lesson the students revised the concept of geometric shapes, counted and compared them, looked for geometric shapes reminding a cube, a roll, a pyramid, etc. in the surroundings, counted cubes, made and decorated a cube, made a board game dice from the given material of modelin. The lesson was interesting and unusual.

The primaries also produced Easter eggs in various ornaments. Mathematics, geometry, symmetry, asymmetry ...
Integrated Mathematics-English lesson in 4th grade. Primary school teacher Jurgita Stankaitienė, English teachers Inga Mačiežaitė-Doveikienė and Deividas Vaičiulis presented an integrated Mathematics-English lesson “Funny Maths” to the 4th grade students. Fourth graders tried to remember the definitions of Mathematical conception, engaged in practical use of English vocabulary and solving Mathematical problems with the help of cards that were prepared upfront. Students enjoyed “Bombs, Guns, and Angels” game the most, where they had to solve Math problems using English knowledge in a fun and fast-paced game style!
On the 2nd of May our 6th graders – Augustė and Martynas – presented their experience and shared their thrilling impressions which they had brought from magnificent Portugal. The students let us know more about their mission abroad, as well as introducing various different methods of teaching Mathematics. Other students had a chance to try out what Martynas and Augustė had prepared for them. Unfortunately, the lack of teaching inventory forced not all of our students to try out the games prepared by our partner countries. However, students will be able to do this during the breaks between lessons. Furthermore, Martynas and Augustė promised their friends to help them build and create their own games which could be used as alternative learning methods.
Our 7th graders Greta and Radvilas prepared the amazing presentation about their journey through the wonders of Portugal to their friends of 5th-7th grades. Greta and Radvilas shared their experience and introduced us all with different, unique, and unusual techniques of teaching Mathematics. We all used our gifts from other partners of the project. Greta and Radvilas acted as qualified teachers. They even managed to use the method of reflection – revision of the learnt material, in this case – the most important aspects of their trip to Portugal. To spice things up, the couple used an online tool “Kahoot” and prepared a quiz! It was a great success!
On May 8, 2018, 4th graders Juste and Adomas shared their impressions about their visit in Portugal with primary school teachers and students. Students told about our partner‘s school, the hospitality and friendship of the Portuguese students, parents and teachers, about the anxiety, and pleasant experiences they had with Portuguese families. However, the most important was the introduction of various mathematical learning methods for primary students, used by our project partners in their schools. Also, Justė and Adomas presented learning materials, which can be used in lessons or during the breaks in the future.
One of our activities – Rubick‘s Cube Competition – was held in June during our school‘s camp “Junior explorer-inventor-designer“ at Rumšiškės. The participants were our sixth graders. Unfortunately, not so many students were able to solve Rubick’s Cube. During math lessons at school, we tried to learn how to do it by reviewing numerous tutorial/educational videos. Students also studied at home. However, the quickest to solve the Cube was Viltė Balčiūnaitė from class 6b. Second best was Mindaugas Ražickas from the same class. While coming home from our camp, students continued the competition on the bus. Martynas Janulaitis (6b) and Eimantas Šapalas (6d) were competing in the finals. After several attempts Eimantas managed to win by solving the Cube in 56 seconds. Other students need to practice more in order to achieve better results in solving Rubick‘s Cube which became their summer challenge.
As the annual tradition, we have decided to decorate our learning and teaching space. This year's theme is - "Icarus Swinebuckle". Our Erasmus+ KA2 project perfectly came into one picture with our ideas of decorating our school building. Students, managed by our art teachers, prepared amazing decorations by using mathematical actions as drawing, calculating, cutting and connecting the geometrical figures. The whole result is called "The City", which is made out of origami stars put up into one garland around the halls of our school. This Christmas exhibition is infested with geometrical figures such as ovals, triangles, rectangles and such. So, Lithuanian studens and teachers are waiting for Christmas
On the 21st of December, just before Christmas break, our 5-7th grades students participated in Mathematics experiment of "chance". They tried to figure out whether the theory of throwing coins and getting equally heads/tails was true. Students attempted this for 100 times and counted the results, which, suprisingly were almost completely 50%/50%.
According to the students, this activity was fun and interesting.
On 9 May 2019 the conference of 6th and 7th form students „Solving Problems with Mathematics 2019“ took place at our school. This is one of the international Erasmus + KA2 projects „Let‘s become Mathematicians, shall we?”organized activities. 34 students (17 pairs) took part in the conference. The students read the reports on various topics that are very relevant today such like various addictions, discrimination, environmental pollution and its impact on human health. Also, students explained and calculated how much smoking is economically harmful, why fast food increases the risk of various illnesses and so on. The students not only raised problems, but also provided solutions. Students read the reports in English, Russian and Lithuanian.
During the whole month of May, our school held an exhibition dedicated to present active learning and teaching methods. One of them was “Digital Tools in Lessons”. With this method, it was possible to help students learn how to do research, learn new things, and understand the surroundings around them. The school also presented some works of the students where they showed how Arts and Math can be integrated in a lesson.
Another method “Definitions and the Scheme of Definitions”. This strategy was used in Arts, Math, and Music lessons. There was also a theme “Ornaments, geometrical figures, rhythm”. Students had to find, understand, types and styles of ornaments in Arts, Math, and Music. Students’ works were presented as well.
On the 30th of May our primary school students participated in tangram challenge together with their parents. Families competed against one another. At the beginning, our students looked better at this task, as they had already had some experience in solving these kinds of puzzles, as they had played with them during the lessons. However, in time, members of the families caught up and managed to complete the tasks. Both groups – parents and children – enjoyed the challenge very much.
The participants from Portugal, Italy, Poland, Hungary, Norway, and Lithuania are about to meet the end of the project. During the period of the project numerous activities were held and students, as well as their parents, were involved. In June, our school presented the exhibition where we shared what we had done throughout the years 2017-2019 in this project.
