On March 25-29, 2019, Primary School No. 29 in Sosnowiec hosted a group of 30 students and 14 teachers from partner schools in Portugal, Italy, Lithuania, Hungary and Norway, which jointly carried out the Erasmus+ project “Let's become mathematicians, shall we?"The main aim of the visit was to share the experience of teaching mathematics in partner schools. During the visit, a number of meetings, classes and workshops related to mathematics were planned. The classes were prepared not only by the hosts – teachers and students of Primary School No. 29 in Sosnowiec, but also the guests.
MONDAY
This day began with a meeting with the school community in the gym. For this occasion, teachers and students of the host school prepared a short artistic program. Afterwards, the guests presented their schools. They showed short films and presentations. Finally, the international choir, i.e. all guests and the school community, together performed the song by Roksana Węgiel "Anyone I want to be".After this official part, guests in the care of English teachers and students, visited the school in two groups to see students and teachers during school hours.Another highlight of the Monday program was a surprise for the guests. They took part in the 'Whirling paints' art workshop. It was not only fun, but also a bit of learning. The guests remembered what would happen if they mixed paints of different colours and what force pulled everything down and why you could fall from the carousel if you did not hold on to it. In short, they remembered the concepts of gravity and centrifugal force. At the end, the guests created hand-made "masterpieces" using an original device. Delight and surprise among guests was endless.After colorful artistic madness, the guests from schools in Portugal and Italy presented their best practices - games used in their maths classes.At the end of the day, a short 'Coding on the carpet' workshop was held for guests. It was a lot of good, relaxing fun.After the first very emotional day, our guests returned to the hotel for the night.
TUESDAY
The next day began with a visit to the City Council in Sosnowiec and a meeting with the city authorities. At 9:00 a.m. Mr. Arkadiusz Chęciński - Mayor of Sosnowiec, Mr. Grzegorz Frugalski - City Secretary and Mrs. Katarzyna Wanic - Head of the Education Department of the City Council met with the participants of the international exchange in the Session Hall of the City Council. All coordinators presented their part of the project and their schools, and then handed the City Council authorities their presents and received gifts specially prepared for them in return.After the visit to the City Council, the guests went to Emilia Plater Secondary School for workshops specially prepared for them. The headmaster, teachers and students who looked after the group throughout their stay in the school welcomed them. The guests were divided into three groups and participated in workshops prepared by teachers and students. There were chemical, biological and physical workshops. After all the classes, there was a joint, commemorative photo in the school assembly hall.On return to school and after lunch, Polish teachers and students offered another set of classes for the students and teachers from partner schools. The guests took part in robotics workshops with the use of Ozobot educational robots and in workshops connected with the use of QR codes in maths classes. At the end of that day’s classes at school, the host teachers prepared an international team competition for their guests in solving mathematical problems. There were a lot of emotions and great fun, during which everyone forgot that they were competing with one another.After a very intensive, full-day work, our guests returned to the hotel for the night. For students it was the last night in the hotel.
WEDNESDAY
The third day of the school visit was another day full of excitement. It began with classes taught by guest teams. Teachers from schools in Norway and Lithuania presented their best practices - games used in their maths classes. The next classes were devoted to showing the relationship between mathematics and art. The students, using various blocks, created buildings characteristic for their countries, which they then presented to other participants. The next class was "In the shop" workshop that took place in the tuck shop. The students worked in international groups - among other things they were to do some shopping and exchange currency. The winning team could do some shopping for themselves. After many educational attractions that took place at school since the morning, there followed one of the most anticipated moments of the visit. The visiting students met the parents of their host students, with whom they were to spend the next three days of their stay. There were emotions. They had the opportunity to meet their host students earlier in the few days they spent at school. After the official welcome and presentation, the parents and guests went home, where some surprises were waiting for them. The teachers stayed at school to do some project work.
THURSDAY
Thursday was the first day when guest students came to school together with the students who hosted them. Everyone shared their impressions. After the stories, the first classes on that day began, concerned with showing the relationship between mathematics and music and visual arts. It was colourful, it was fun, there was singing. Everyone had a great time. They were positively charged with energy to proceed to the next workshop – solving the Rubik's cube. Not only workshops, but also a competition for students took place. The last classes on this day were workshops using "Grabowski Cards". Everyone had a great time and learned at the same time. After a short break, our guests met with the parents again, for whom they prepared a short artistic program, songs and dances. Then the parents took our guests to their homes, where there were even more surprises waiting for them. The teachers stayed for more project work.
FRIDAY
On Friday, very early in the morning, as it was only 6.30, the guests and the hosts went on a trip to Warsaw. The highlight of the trip was a stay at the Copernicus Science Center. The visit to the Copernicus Science Center began with a visit to the Planetarium. In peace and quiet you could sit in comfortable armchairs to hear about the stars and planets. The image literally surrounded everyone. There was the impression of drifting in space and observing the galaxy from the spaceship cabin. And around ... there were 20 million stars. After the screening, everyone went to see the inside of the facility. Not only did they watch everything, but also conducted experiments in individual sites.After their stay at the Copernicus Science Center, everyone went to the Old Town so that the guests could buy souvenirs.
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY
All good things must come to an end. We didn't even know when this week had passed. Saturday and Sunday were the days when the guests travelled home. There were emotions, there were tears, but above all there were a lot of unforgettable impressions that would remain in memory for a long time.
