At the College of Staten Island, our Earth and Environmental Science Program is deeply committed to preparing students for dynamic careers in science, policy, and industry. One of the most impactful ways we do this is by organizing academic and professional development events that connect students with real-world applications of their studies. These events provide opportunities to:
Explore career pathways in environmental consulting, public service, education, GIS, and research.
Engage directly with government agencies, nonprofits, academia, and industry professionals.
Gain valuable skills and knowledge that complement classroom learning, such as networking, public speaking, and exposure to emerging technologies.
Build community within the program by encouraging collaboration, mentoring, and cross-disciplinary dialogue.
Program development and student recruitment into our growing program.
We welcome professionals, alumni, graduate students, and researchers from all disciplines connected to the Earth and Environmental Sciences. We'd love to hear from you if you’re interested in sharing your work, mentoring students, or supporting our program! We are especially interested in having you share current research efforts, projects, career journeys, and new internship opportunities for students to apply to. If interested, please contact: sean.thatcher@csi.cuny.edu Program Coordinator, Earth and Ocean Sciences
Academic and professional development events build community, boost confidence, and prepare students for success beyond the classroom. Welcoming events foster connections, student presentations enhance communication skills, and internship or research opportunities provide hands-on experience. Together, these experiences support career readiness and deepen engagement in Earth and Environmental Science.
GIS Day highlights the vital role of geospatial technology in understanding and solving Earth and environmental challenges. It showcases how mapping and spatial analysis inform climate research, urban planning, conservation, and sustainability. The event empowers students to explore GIS tools, connect with professionals, and envision impactful careers in environmental science.
A speaker series connects students with experts in earth and environmental science, offering real-world insights, career guidance, and networking opportunities. These events broaden academic perspectives, inspire future paths, and foster a stronger learning community by exposing students to diverse voices, research topics, and professional experiences beyond the classroom.
