The 3 act structure has been a staple of the creative industries ever since Syd Field popularised it in his 1979 book Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting.
The problem with initially starting out with your idea is how to build on it and make sure that it is going to tell an engaging story. Using the 3 act structure can help you build your story, ensuring that it is going to help deliver the narrative and keep the audience engaged.
The premise is simple, 3 acts to tell your story. Think of it as a Begining, Middle and End when delivering your story. You need to hook the audience into your story, present a problem, have rising action and then a solution to that problem.
