Canon IJ Scan Utility is a convenient tool that allows you to scan documents, photos, and other items directly from your Canon printer to your computer. But like any software, it can sometimes run into issuesâfailing to open, not detecting your scanner, producing errors, or suddenly disappearing after an update. This guide covers the most common Canon IJ Scan Utility problems and how to fix them quickly, whether you're using Windows or macOS.
One of the most frequent problems is the utility not launching after you click it. This usually happens because of outdated or corrupted drivers.
Restart your computer â simple, but it often resolves software conflicts.
Reinstall the Canon driver package â download the full driver/software package for your printer from the official Canon support site.
Run as Administrator (Windows) â right-click IJ Scan Utility â Run as administrator.
Check blocked apps (Windows 11) â go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps and ensure itâs not disabled.
If it canon still wonât open, completely uninstall the Canon software suite and reinstall it fresh.
This is another common issue, often caused by connection problems, network conflicts, or missing drivers.
Make sure the USB cable is firmly connected on both ends.
Try a different USB port.
Avoid using USB hubs or splitters.
Reinstall USB drivers if necessary.
Confirm the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.
Restart your printer and router.
Print a Network Configuration Page to verify connection status.
On Windows, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers and ensure the device is not listed as âOffline.â
Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners and ensure the canon printer appears under âPrinters.â If not, click + to add it again
These errors usually occur because the canon scanning service isnât running, the connection dropped, or a firewall is blocking communication.
Restart the Canon scanning services (Windows)
Press Win + R, type services. msc, and press Enter.
Look for Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
Make sure it is set to Automatic and is running.
Disable VPNs temporarily
VPNs can block local network devices, preventing scanners from being detected.
Check your firewall
Allow IJ Scan Utility through Windows Defender Firewall or your antivirus firewall settings.
Re-add your scanner
On both Windows and macOS, remove the printer/scanner and add it again.
Sometimes, system updates remove or break Canon software.
Reinstall the IJ Scan Utility from the Canon support page for your specific model.
Avoid installing generic or third-party driversâthey often do not include scanning functions.
On macOS, check System Preferences > Printers & Scanners and re-add the printer if missing.
If Windows replaced your driver with a âMicrosoft IPP Class Driver,â uninstall it and reinstall the Canon driver package.
This is typically a settings issue rather than a hardware problem.
In IJ Scan Utility, select Settings â choose the correct preset (Photo, Document, Custom).
Increase resolution (DPI)â300 DPI for documents, 600 DPI+ for photos.
Clean the scanner glass and underside of the lid.
Disable auto-crop if it is cutting off edges.
For color issues, switch the color mode from "Auto" to "Color" under settings.
Freezing often happens with large files, older computers, or limited memory.
Lower the DPI slightly (e.g., from 600 to 300).
Close heavy applications while scanning.
Scan in smaller sections or pages.
Use the USB connection instead of Wi-Fi if scanning large photos or multiple pages.
When the buttons are greyed out, the computer is unable to communicate fully with the device.
Make sure the printer is set as the default device.
Confirm itâs not listed as âOffline.â
Update the Canon driver package.
Restart the IJ Scan Utility after reconnecting the printer.
Keep your Canon printer drivers updated at least every few months.
Use the full Canon driver suite, not the basic Windows/Mac driver.
Restart your printer weekly to refresh its network connection.
Use a stable Wi-Fi network or wired USB for the most reliable scanning.
