The group next headed back to Feathergale Spire. They needed that key! LiKi fidgeted with the feather-patterned golden ring set with five fine garnets that she had received as a gift from Thurl Merosska for delivering the death blow during the manticore hunt. She wondered how the lord commander of the Feathergale Knights would respond to such a direct (and specific) request.
Alexander's spirits were up. He was excited to reacquaint himself with the Feathergale Knights with whom he felt an affinity despite their lofty pedigrees. Leopold was much more skeptical. Kahntun remembered the aarakocras' suspicions.
When they were about a half mile away from the drawbridge, two knights on hippogriffs sailed by, thirty feet overhead. LiKi felt a rush of excitement, wondering if she would get another chance to ride into battle on such a majestic steed.
They were greeted as heroes by the captain of the gatehouse, Savra Belabranta. Her enthusiasm suggested that it might be difficult to seperate her from the order as Sildar Hallwinter requested. Depending on what happened, her noble family in Waterdeep might have to continue to wait for a reunion.
As Savra escorted the party up the spiral staircase to the observation deck on the top level, she informed the party that:
Thurl Merosska greeted the party and elegantly recited a fairly accurate accounting of their deeds. He hailed them as worthy of joining their noble order and made other pronouncements; Leopold yawned, yet Alexander felt a mixture of both awe and pride as his acts were described in such elevated language.
The only thing the party had to do to join the order would be to "take a leap of faith" and step off the tower, plummeting to the valley floor. They looked over the edge and noticed that the entire valley was obscured by a thick layer of fog stretching out at about 300 feet beneath the stables of Feathergale Spire. This was when Leopold, Kahntun, and LiKi looked around and noticed that there were about twenty air cultists staring at them intently. Thurl continued to smile, gesturing with his hand for the party to take their plunges. "The prince of Air, Yan-C-Bin will guide you gently to your new lives as masters of the wind! You will be perfectly safe."
Alexander was about to go through with it, despite Leopold's grumbling. But before he stepped off, Thurl asked Alexander to set his sword down. This was more than Alex could take. It broke the spell.
Suddenly Thurl's welcoming smile twisted into a cynical sneer, then a cruel laugh. "To think we would let vermin such you to sully the name of our majestic order, our prophet, and our prince! You disrupted the plans of Jolliver and his filthy lot down at Rivergard Keep, and with that, your usefulness has expired. You were actually going to step off weren't you? That would have been a sight, but finishing you off the old fashioned way will be even more rewarding! Attack!"
What followed was a long, complicated fight that occurred on multiple levels of the tower, both in and outside its sturdy stone walls! Here are the adversaries the party had to deal with:
6 Feathergale knights, including Savra. They fought with swords and crossbows.
These 8 waifish initiates swarmed our heroes, helping to grapple and tie them up.
2 hurricanes attacked, grappled, and bound both Kahntun and Alexander. Kahntun broke free, but Alexander was thrown over the edge.
Kahntun and Alexander were unceremoniously cast over the edge of the upper-most level of Feathergale Spire!
Savra was delirious, babbling, and terrified. Her world had just turned upside down. Something appeared to have a hold on her mind. She seethed with rage at the party. They locked her in one of the rooms.
When the party searched the rest of the rooms, they found:
