Bruldenthar urged our heroes to discover the root of the evil permeating the Dessarin Valley and "find me books!"
Leopold was able to successfully escort the Mirabaran scholar Bruldenthar and the other seventeen bewildered former prisoners of the Sacred Stone monks back to Rivergbard Keep. The castle was abandoned and eerie. Weird sounds persisted, but the group scrounged up some supplies and holed up locked within the southeast tower where they could monitor river traffic.
Two and a half days later, Leopold's companions, Alexander, LiKi, and Kahntun returned victorious from the reclusive monks' fortification. They had strange tales to tell about the "Sacred Stone Monks," their true affiliation with the "Black Earth Cult," and some of its leadership, most notably, their prophet Marlos Urnrayle.
What's more, they were once again thwarted after finding what appears to be an entrance into the lost underground city, Tyar-Besil. But, they seemed to be in possession of two out of the four essential keys: the key seemingly associated with water bandits, pirates, and Rivergard keep, as well as the key known to be associated with the symbol of the Black Earth Cult.
The party regained their strength as they waited for the Knights of Samular to sail up the Dessarin river with their keelboat from Womford. Some of the freed commoners were eager to get back to their settlements, but Leopold was able to convince 14 of them to stay and help fortify and reestablish the necessary comforts of a keep such as this. They went to work burying dead bodies, cleaning up messes, putting fires in the hearths, and organizing provisions. This made Rivergard much more comfortable, yet unambiguously announced to the surrounding areas that it was now inhabited once again.
As the party dined with Bruldenthar in the Great Hall of Rivergard Keep, discussing the clues they have gathered so far, LiKi suddenly noticed that the massive wooden doors leading to the castle yard had caught fire. Conjuring elemental energy, LiKi sent a ray of frost flying to the door, extinguishing the fire, yet punching a jagged hole in the strong oak. Alexander and Kahntun leaped up to investigate, and when they looked outside, they saw what appeared to be a male fire genasi hovering atop his wyvern mount sixty feet off the ground. The genasi announced himself as Livid Litborn, top lieutenant of the Eternal Flame cult. Here's what happened:
Livid Litborn, otherwise known by his birth name, Bastian Thermander, attacked Rivergard keep atop his wyvern mount.
Highlights from combat:
Just when the party thought they had one the battle with the fire genasi, four hell hounds crept out of the shadows where they had been lurking and attacked.
Taken off guard and still recovering from their sudden encounter with Livid Litborn, the party had a tough time with the four hell hounds, taking severe damage from their fire breath attacks. Kahntun dispatched a hound quickly, then dashed in to the Rivergard temple to rescue an unconscious LiKi, administering healing to our wounded gnome. Leopold crept around invisible and cast heroism on Kahntun an Alexander. Alexander slashed two hounds to death, while LiKi finished the final one off with a ray of frost. Again, the keep was quiet.
After the encounter with the genasi scum, Livid Litborn, Kahntun reexamined the letter he had taken off that dead hobgoblin so many months back. He wondered how things fared back home. But mostly he fixated on the blinding rage and the unquenchable thirst for vengeance that burned inside him. He knew that he would face Litborn again some day. He vowed to be ready to deliver justice for his fallen cousin when the opportunity arose.
Six guards and four knights of Samular arrived the day after the fight with Litborn. They agreed to garrison the castle. What's more, ten of the freed commoners from the dungeons beneath Sacred Stone Monastery agreed to serve at Rivergard keep. Patrols were set and guards were stationed at the secret underground landing beneath the keep. The knights had brought the party's keelboat from Womford, along with the following news:
Despite their eagerness to pursue the lead about the druid festival, it would have to wait. Talk of a "fire witch" piqued the parties interests for a variety of reasons, not least of all was their recent deadly encounter with Bastian Thermander. Also, Quelline had been good to the party when they needed her in Phandalin. They were duty bound to provide what assistance they could to her and hers. They departed Rivergard keep early the next morning.
