MPA is a web-based application, not an installable software. This website acts as the gateway to the LIvestock Market Survey project and also provides access to the demo database of the MPA. The 'MPA Tutorial' tab explains in detail the forms and data entry methods for collecting market data after joining the application.
The 'LIVE DEMO' tab allows users to register and join the demo MPA project. The first step in the process is the provision of valid e-mail registered to a Google Account (if you want to use web interface) or installation of Epicollect5 mobile app.
The 'Our surveys' tab allows users to join the Poultry Market Survey project. The first step in the process is the filling in of a questionnaire to allow for customized MPA content. After this you will be provided with further instructions on how to start your own (not demo!) LBM data collection process.
Collected data is stored in the online database physically located on the server of Epicollect 5 project. Access to your poultry market survey data will be configured through a dedicated password protected web page. Data will be available for viewing, editing and download from the web at any time, but only for authorized users according to their respective roles (see here).
A consistent internet connection is not always required to take advantage of the MPA. Data collection forms are available in hard copy, and data entry using the Epicollect5 mobile application can be done while offline and uploaded once a connection becomes available. You can always find a way to collect and enter your data best for your situation.
Currently, Vietnam is the only country to have collected data using prototype MPA, with many visualizations on this website displaying their results. The MPA should soon begin expanding into various regions of Africa, with data collection beginning in many countries from late 2018.
Respondents are to be identified within the country to visit markets and collect data. Forms are available in electronic or hard copy, and data can even be entered into the MPA onsite by utilizing the Epicollect5 application on a mobile phone. Countries will be supported in the visualization and management of data.

Live bird markets (LBM) have been closely correlated to both the zoonotic transmission of AIs, as well as their spread within bird species in both Africa and Asia. Furthermore, targeting disease prevention and control activities to reduce the risk of spillover to humans has been instrumental in determining the role LBMs play in promoting the emergence of the disease and acting as a reservoir for the virus. Unfortunately, many countries do not have quality data which identifies the geographic location or characteristics of their markets.
Though the primary focus is on live bird markets (LBM), with appropriate modifications to the data collection forms the MPA can easily accommodate the processing of any market data.
Data visualization, both spatial and non-spatial, is automatically performed after input of data into the MPA. Markets can be analysed using data located within the standard form, or based upon poultry commodities, hygiene and bio-security, or trade connection available in the sub-forms. Remember that the visualizations available will depend on the amount and type of quality data which is collected on the ground. Further analysis details can be found under the 'Analysis' tab.
