Weighbridge

Point 13

Bruce Blything lots of muck and money.mp3

The Bailey Bridge to your left, was the route into the landfill site from the weighbridge on the far side of the River Dibbin.

They say when there’s muck there’s money,

and believe me on a land fill site there lots of muck and lots of money.

Like everybody else I never gave it a second thought where my waste went or anything. That was it. It just fitted in with.. My children were still at school. It was a small part time job in a weigh bridge I hadn’t got a clue what it entailed but as I say the hours suited.

I think the phone rang every single day. People complained about the flies, about the smells, erm, the litter in the Mersey which was you know if the wind was blowing the wrong way obviously it all went that way. So a lot of people were not that happy about having the landfill, especially the ones who lived on the doorstep. The houses in New Ferry were not long built, from what I can gather, and I don’t think they were very happy because their views over the Mersey were diminishing daily basically.

Now in my opinion now it’s so wrong that we put stuff in the ground. I work for Chester Zoo and obviously the conservation is of the utmost importance to me. However, at the time, I’ve got to be honest I didn’t really think much about it

‘Every wagon had to be weighed for payment … They’d … go up to the landfill, tip their waste and we’d take the empty weight of the vehicle so we knew how much they’d tipped’.. All sorts of waste came through: household, general, waste from the oil refinery, and local factories, special waste, asbestos and hazardous waste and chicken feathers-the smell was unbelievable! There were traffic lights on the bridge to hold back the traffic when hazardous waste went through. If items of value, like cash or jewellery had been accidently collected, the load was emptied nearby to retrieve them!
