Wastewater Treatment Works

Point 8

As you turn right walking around the lake there’s an unexpected sight, a large industrial plant, on the left. This is Bromborough Wastewater Treatment Works which replaced a previous water treatment plant in the 1970’s. When the PLUTO hill was extended for this work residents lost their view of the river. Vans and lorries access the works via the service road that runs next to the car park at the Dock Road North entrance, this is the reason why visitors need to exercise caution when crossing into the park.

The information board gives an overview of the processes involved in providing water and removing wastewater locally.

Leachate Treatment

Peter L. Biffa on how they work with United Utilities, to treat the Leachate from the Park.

“Yes, they monitor our effluent very carefully. Every month they come and take a sample and obviously they keep an eye on the volumes and they charge us for it as well. But yes, we have a consent with numerous conditions on them that we have to meet.”

In the past this works has caused major problems.

The problem in Bromborough began three years ago.(2001) A resident told a local newspaper last summer: "We can't open the windows or sit out in the garden, it keeps us prisoners in our own homes. On a hot day it makes you feel physically sick."

House of Commons Debate 20 January 2004

Mr. Ben Chapman (Wirral, South)(Lab) I wish to present a petition on behalf of more than 600 constituents to protest at the failure of United Utilities to accelerate measures to stem the foul odours emanating from its Bromborough waste water treatment plant, which blight local residents' lives.

The petition states: To the House of Commons.

The petition of residents affected by odours from Bromborough Waste Water Treatment Works operated by United Utilities declares

That they demand that action be taken to end the intolerable smells from the plant that have pervaded nearby houses and shopping areas for too long.

The petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons calls upon United Utilities to bring forward its programme of remedial work at the Bromborough site, and call upon the Government to hasten legislation requiring utility companies to operate water treatment plants in accordance with strict rules and to have due regard to the environment and all who live or work nearby.
