Teacher in charge: Miss B. Harrison
It has been a very exciting year for our PSHS chess club and the number has swelled – 80 pupils attended chess at various times. The number of grade 8 players has increased which gives a good foundation for the future. We had a chess tournament on Open Day which was well-attended and won by Phelelani Zondi in grade 11. We also took part in the Durban South Schools League Chess Championships and we were up against some tough competition. Ten members played as a PSHS team and we came 2nd overall out of 8 schools. Phelelani Zondi, Siphelele Magxala and Lusaduma Mfenyana made the Southern Natal chess team.
We also took part in the Ugu District tournament in March and three pupils were placed in the top five players. In May we also participated in the Sayidi Circuit trials and four pupils made it through to the final round for the Ugu chess team. Congratulations to Siphelele Magxala and Phelelani Zondi who were selected and participated in the final KZN trials in Durban in June. I hope chess will grow from strength to strength next year and PSHS will be the top chess playing school on the coast.
