Studying tourism enables a learner to become multi-skilled and able to set up their own business (job creation) or receive learnerships from institutions, as there is a huge shortage of skilled staff in this occupational field. Tourism as a subject builds confidence within learners who normally do not excel in other subjects. The Tourism industry offers huge opportunities for students who have studied tourism at school, thus offering them the possibility of immediate employment after Grade 12.
Tourism is the study of the activities, services and industries that deliver a travel experience to groups or individuals. The subject links well with other areas of learning for example: Mathematical Literacy; Life Science; CAT; Business Studies; History and Consumer Studies.

· Foreign exchange concepts and the buying power of different foreign currencies
· Map work
· Influence of the world time zones on travel
· South Africa and the SACD countries as tourism destinations

2018 NEWS
Dorcas Dlamini-Mbele, Group Sales Director for Protea Hotels by Marriott International Group, spent some time with the Grade 9 learners on Monday 7 May 2018, before they start to think about their subject choices later the year. She chatted to them about the career opportunities available in the tourism industry.
Dorcas, a proudly Sheppie High matriculant herself, is a very successful leader in the industry, having been named one of the Top 100 Young Independent Leaders in South Africa by Independent Media in 2017. It was an honour for the school to host Mrs Mbele, who had travelled all the way from Gauteng for the occasion.
