I understand a learning-focused culture as creating a classroom where students feel safe, supported, and excited to learn. This means setting clear goals, having high expectations, and encouraging a "can-do" attitude where students see challenges as ways to grow. In a learning-focused classroom, I try to use teaching methods that meet each student's needs, inspiring them to ask questions and think deeply. Building strong relationships, respecting differences, and including content that connects to students' backgrounds is also important. I encourage students to think about their learning and celebrate their progress, helping them feel confident and take pride in their growth. By planning with my mentor teacher and regularly reflecting on my teaching, I work to create a positive and focused learning space that helps every student do their best.
My evidence shows how I understand creating a positive learning environment by using strategies I’ve learned from my mentor teacher. One key strategy my mentor uses is greeting each student individually at the start of the day, which sets a welcoming tone and makes students feel important. My mentor also uses a visual schedule, which gives students structure and helps them feel less anxious by letting them know what to expect. Group work is also common, where students are encouraged to work together, building teamwork and respect.
I often like to incorporate hands-on activities and encourage students to use “kind words, kind hands, and kind hearts.” I also use positive feedback and encourage praise to help build a supportive atmosphere.
The photos I included show the school culture, like displays of student work, symbols of cultural identity, and our values. I add to this culture by leading small group activities, encouraging inclusion, and supporting students to share their ideas.
