Trinkets are tangible small wonders, also known as curio's or knick-knacks. My fascination with trinket's whimsicality, meaning and effect in our daily lives is at the core of this project.
A trinket is..
a (whimsical) object;
of smaller size;
with emotional value;
but little or diminished monetary value;
indicating no clear functionality (or serving an unintended one);
with unique physical characteristics;
and a narrative (origins, meaning, themes & connection).
This project is a collection of several deliverables, showcasing several executions of this core idea.
These include
the interactive artefact/game;
an art booklet;
an essay on the importance of trinkets and small wonders;
a tutorial on visually developing a trinket and a unity package to implement the trinket in interactive context.
More than anything these tangible small wonders can bring wonder, joy & connection, emotions I want to encourage through my work. I hope that by experiencing this collection you, too, become aware of the small wonders that are subconsciously present in your daily life.
In a whimsical alternate universe, you are an appraisal expert tasked with valuing a curious trinket collection through..
✶ quirky interactions;
✶ exploring the visual narrative;
✶ ranking them using eccentric currencies such as ‘tumble dried socks’ and ‘grandmother’s bundt cake slices’.
A digital catalogue of the visuals created for this project. Including an introduction, all 23 trinkets, spreads on the four most wonderful, 8 postcards (printable on 100 x 150 mm), the storyboard, the inspection scene, selected game assets and the addendum essay.
A website build so others can can share their trinkets as a custom game! Holds lots of knowledge on trinkets and how to visually develop them, and gives you the unity package so you can implement what you've learned. The video below is my demonstration, about a trinket named 'matchbox puzzle'.
