Context
Things I like include reading and writing, as I have been passionate about this from a young age and it is an interest that I have carried with me throughout my life, and has become a form of escape and pleasure for me. I also love visual media such as fashion magazines and catalogues.
I also enjoy social activities such as hanging out with my friends, going to parties and going on holiday. This is because I believe life isn't all about work and school - you should enjoy yourself and have fun whenever you can because life isn't that serious!
I love the beach, as it is one of my favourite places and I have found it inspires me in all areas of my writing. I find that peaceful and serene places like the seaside are important to have access to as they can inspire creativity and a writing location.
Finally, music is one of my strong passions, and inspires me to write and create. I love music that focuses on lyricism, especially lyrics that tell a story. Some artists that I like include Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Harry Styles, Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie, Elliot Smith and Jeff Buckley.
My Mum and Grannie are two people that I am inspired by as they are two people in my life that have constantly inspired me and pushed me to do my best and follow my aspirations, especially when it comes to writing. A pivotal moment in my life was when I got diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 13, which affected my attention span in school and motivation to write. Despite this, my Mum and Grannie supported me throughout this stage and did everything they could to assist my learning so I could pursue what I love. They have also been an inspiration for my writing, especially when it comes to feminism as having two strong women as role models sparked my passion for women's rights and creating work around that.
Introduction
My topic of study is researching what goes into making an engaging magazine. I am choosing to research this because I feel it will tie in with my FMP very well, as I am considering creating a magazine on fashion around the world. I also believe I need to build my knowledge of magazine creation and publishing, as I currently have limited experience in this area. By conducting this research, I hope to better prepare myself for the future and gain a deeper understanding of the publishing industry, which will be beneficial for my ambitions of becoming a journalist or publisher.
I have always been passionate about storytelling, media, and writing, which has influenced my interest in journalism and publishing. Fashion has been a key interest of mine, and I am fascinated by how different cultures interpret and express fashion. By researching how to make a magazine engaging, I will be able to combine my interests in writing, design, and global fashion into a cohesive final project. Additionally, I believe that understanding what makes a magazine compelling—whether it be the design, content, layout, or marketing—will provide me with valuable skills for my future career.
To make my research comprehensive, I will explore various aspects of magazine production, including editorial content, visual design, audience engagement, and distribution strategies. I plan to study existing successful magazines, analyze their structures and stylistic choices, and conduct interviews with professionals in the field to gain insights into the industry. I may also explore digital versus print publishing to understand how magazines stay relevant in an evolving media landscape.
My research focuses on exploring what makes a magazine engaging, particularly in terms of content, design, and audience appeal. This ties into my FMP, where I aim to create a fashion magazine highlighting global cultural influences. To gain a deeper understanding of magazine publishing, I will analyse renowned publications like Vogue, which excels at blending editorial content with striking visuals, and study the work of journalists such as Suzy Menkes, known for her in-depth fashion reporting.
Throughout my research, I aim to refine my own magazine concept and apply what I learn to my FMP. By doing so, I hope to create a visually and editorially compelling magazine that reflects my passion for fashion journalism and storytelling. My goal is to develop my skills in writing, editing, and publishing, ultimately preparing myself for a future career in journalism or publishing.
