Players have to enter a tournament in the Arena to qualify for the Gym Challenge before they're allowed to progress past Norfon Village.
A trucker accidentally brought an arctic Vulpix down south. Since he can't take care of it or bring it home, he offers to give it to the player. (This Vulpix is guaranteed to be holding a Charti Berry when accepted.)
The Pokémon Center's mart occasionally updates its stock after a gym is defeated.
