Lesson 2 - ground & grass Pokémon

Ground Pokémon

Ground Pokémon are one of the strongest types offensively. They are super effective against Fire, Electric, Poison, Rock, and Steel Pokémon, and Earthquake is one of the strongest moves in the game as it has 100's in both power and accuracy. Many Ground types are also dual Rock types as well though, meaning that they have four times Grass and Water disadvantages. Ground moves are also not very effective against bug Pokémon and have no effect on Flying Pokémon. Electric, Poison, and Rock Pokémon all have little to no effect on Ground Pokémon, while Water, Grass, and Ice Pokémon are all super-effective against Ground Pokémon. All 80 ground type Pokémon can be found in the image while three will be highlighted below!

Diglett - Dugtrio

Diglett and Dugtrio are constantly surrounded by a pile of dirt around them, and they both burrow under the ground sparking tremors and earthquakes. They have feet under the ground that are rarely seen, and their thin skin is what causes them to shy away from the sun for they grow weak if they heat up too much. Digletts are often kept on farms to till the land when they aren't living in caves, tunnels, and canopies of forest. Both Pokémon feed on plant roots.

Cubone - Marowak

Cubone has one of the most tragic histories out of all Pokémon. The skull on its head is actually the skull of his or her dead mother. They are called the "Lonely Pokémon" because they keep to themselves as they mourn the loss of their mother. They weep at night and create a "plaintive and mournful sound" as the skull they wear vibrates. The full moon especially reminds them of their deceased mother. A Marowak has overcome the grief of its mother's passing and is now very ferocious and violent, as it wields different bones for attack. They even pound on boulders with their bone club to carry messages to other Marowaks.

Hippopotas - Hippowdon

Hippopotas and Hippowdon Pokémon are found in deserts and dry areas and are known to shoot large amounts of sand from different ports in their body. Despite their short tails they can use a powerful Iron Tail hit against other Pokémon and have a strong set of jaws for using Bite and Crunch. Hippopotas is one of the few Pokémon that can learn Slack Off - which is a move that restores HP. The Male versions of these Pokémon are shown here, but the female versions have the opposite color schemes.

Grass is one of the three elemental types of Pokémon along with Water and Fire, making it one of the most well known types in the game. It is also one of the weakest types statistically, as it has five defensive weaknesses and there are seven types that are resistant to Grass moves. Furthermore, if a Grass Pokémon has Poison as their secondary type, which happens often, they will also have a vulnerability to Psychic Pokémon. The weakest combination of Pokémon type is Grass and Psychic. Grass Pokémon are super-effective against Water, Ground, and Rock, but they are not very effective against Fire, Grass, Poison, Flying, Bug, Dragon, or Steel. Water, Electric, Grass, and Ground Pokémon are also not very effective against Grass types, but Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, and Bug Pokémon are all super-effective against Grass types. There are 117 different Grass type pokemon.

Tangela - Tangrowth

Tangela is a three foot tall Pokémon that evolves into a six foot tall ape-like creature named Tangrowth. Both versions of the Pokémon ensnare and entangle their foes with their blue vines that are constantly swaying and jiggling. Their vines can snap off without them feeling anything, so Tangrowth has been known to lose an arm without realizing it. Tangrowths are quite unintelligent and slow, but also very friendly. No one knows for sure exactly what's underneath those vines. You can often find these Pokémon living in grassy plains or in jungles together and with other Grass-Types.

Oddish - Gloom - Vileplume/Bellossom

Oddish Pokémon evolve into Gloom which then evolves into either a Vileplume or a Bellossom, depending on the stone presented to it. Oddish, Gloom, and Vileplume, all have blue circular bodies, while Bellossom has a green and yellow skirt. Gloom and Vileplume develop one large dark red flower on top of their head, with Vileplume having the largest petals in the world, while Bellossom has two bright red flowers. Bellossom likes to cheer and dance, but Vileplume is far more poisonous and uses its large petals to scatter its pollen and attract prey. They all live in grassy plains and tropical areas.

Petilil - Lilligant

Petilil is an onion shaped Pokémon that moves using five stubs, two of which act as arms. Petilil, and it's evolution form Lilligant are a female-only species, and are quite rare because of it. The leaves from Petilil can help restore energy to a tired trainer, and they plant themselves in very rich soil full of moisture and nutrients. The smell of a Lilligant flower is very sweet and has a relaxing effect to those around them. It is difficult to get the flower to bloom, and if the Lilligant is neglected, the flower will wilt. Because of the rarity of the Lilligant, it is very popular with celebrities.
