Shadowing - For University of Calgary medical students only
Thank you for for your interest in shadowing PM&R in Calgary! We are happy to announce that we have recently updated our shadowing policy to allow for much higher volume & frequency in shadowing for all UofC medical students.Â
Please see the full Calgary PM&R Shadowing Policy here. A summary of the shadowing policy is as follows:
Who Can Shadow: Only University of Calgary pre-clerkship medical students may request PM&R shadowing. First-year students must wait several weeks after starting medical school. Clerkship students and students from other schools or disciplines are not eligible.
Arranging Shadowing: Students contact PM&R preceptors directly to request opportunities. If you don’t have contact details, email the PM&R Program Administrator (Daphne Bates - daphne.bates@albertahealthservices.ca) for assistance in reaching preceptors of interest. Please note that preceptors may potentially decline shadowing requests dependent on their availability.
Number of Sessions: You can do unlimited shadowing sessions, but must complete one before requesting the next (e.g., finish brain injury rehab before requesting spinal cord rehab).
Nature of Shadowing: Experiences are mainly observational. Students may occasionally help with history-taking or exams but are not responsible for patient care.
Professional Expectations: Be punctual, respectful, and maintain confidentiality. Once confirmed, report your shadowing via OSLER so UME can issue a preceptor approval letter. Preceptors or students may cancel if needed.
Oversight: The PM&R Program Administrator manages contact lists; the Residency Program Director oversees policy compliance.

Electives
We are happy to accept elective students so long as we have capacity to have you as time and space permit. Please note that we do receive a high number of elective requests, so it is recommended you request your elective as soon as you are able to. Unfortunately we do not have control or input regarding the Elective Portal that is utilized by students to apply for electives.
Elective students are placed with two preceptors each week, in order to balance spending time with one preceptor over multiple days but also seeing various types of practices and patient populations.
If you are interested in completing an elective with us:
Follow the Visiting Electives request process as outlined by the Undergraduate Medical Education program.Â
We have a form that helps us understand the goals of your elective (areas of physiatry you would like exposure to, if you want to meet the program director, etc.) - please fill this out so we can best tailor the elective to your requests.
