Lecture by Prof. Filipe Maia

Humanity has long been fascinated by both the astronomically large and the infinitesimally small. In this lecture I will explore our journey to see and understand the natural world at the microscopic scale, invisible to the naked eye.

From the first microscopes and the birth of cell biology, physics and technological development have been closely intertwined with scientific progress in biology. Last century a different kind of light, X-rays, opened up a whole new level of detail and gave rise to molecular biology. The profound impact of light, in its many forms, in biology is hard to overstate and we'll discover its enduring impact up to the present day.
