The Pillars of Al-Andalus blog project is our team's research and findings about the significance of architectural in Al-Andalus history. This project is a fulfillment for the requirements of the Honors Geographical Perspectives course. The results are from the collaboration of a four-member-team including Ngoc Viet Nguyen, Adrian Go, Tuan Khang Phan, Xander Lopez, and under the supervision and guidance of instructor Raja Benchekroun.
The Scope and Direction of Our Study
Architecture in Al-Andalus offers a vivid record of the people and ideas that shaped the Iberian Peninsula from 711–1492 CE. Our group's research examines this legacy through four major periods (Umayyad, Abbasid, Almoravid, and Almohad) each explored through its historical context, architectural innovations and aspects, and notable buildings.
From the intricate stucco work to ambitious architectural styles, these dynasties transformed the built environment in ways that blended local traditions with influences from across the Islamic world. This blog represents the culmination of our study into how architecture both reflected and shaped Andalusian society, revealing a landscape where culture and faith converged.

Hello everyone! I’m a Computer Science major with a deep interest in history and architecture. Exploring the Umayyad Caliphate’s architectural legacy in Al-Andalus took me outside my usual science courses. I especially loved uncovering how cultural fusion and engineering innovation shaped their iconic designs, like the horseshoe and double-tiered arches that define their golden age.

Hi everyone! I’m a second-year in Computer Science who loves exploring amazing ideas. For this project, I’m looking at how the Almoravids designed their buildings and what their way of thinking can teach me about problem-solving. I’m taking this honors course to gain a deeper understanding of Morocco and North Africa, and I hope it helps me appreciate their history, architecture, and culture in a more meaningful and inspiring way.

Hello everyone, I am a sophomore in the electrical engineering course, and I love to learn about the intricacies of public infrastructure. I am focusing on the Almohad Caliphate, making my best attempt to portray the stylistic and utilitarian choices Almohad architects and engineers used. The research done in this project helped me appreciate the infrastructure of today.
