They highlighted not only the social and political dynamics of the region but also its rich architectural legacy, including intricate geometric patterns, soaring minarets, and grand palaces. Watching these structures in context helped us understand that architecture in Al-Andalus was more than functional; it reflected cultural exchange, artistic innovation, and spiritual expression. The films shaped our perspective on how these buildings served as living records of a society that blended diverse influences into enduring forms of beauty.

Art of Spain - The Moorish South
In this documentary, you follow how Arab and Berber dynasties use architecture to tie parts of Spain and North Africa together. You move through places like the Great Mosque of Córdoba and Madīnat al-Zahrāʾwhere Roman engineering and Visigothic stonework make up repeating arches, carved plaster, shaded courts, and systems for running water. Iberian palaces and North African sites share patterns in minarets and courtyard layouts, each adjusted to local climate and changing rulers. Palaces show shifts in power while the same workshops keep producing tile and carving for new patrons, and mosques and halls show you what each dynasty had to say about belief and rule.
