In order to be more effective in achieving our goals, we employ a formalized shared leadership structure. Our network offers a structured way to work together interdependently, recognizing and leveraging the unique talents of the individuals who make up the team. Our team structures also help create strategic capacity—the ability to work creatively together in ways that produce more vibrant, engaging strategy than any individual could create alone. Our movement has clear missions and goals that all team members work towards through collaboration, creativity, and commitment. Our structure is also essential in providing a foundation from which an organization can expand its reach, as no one person can singlehandedly create an organization of massive scale.
Most importantly, our team structure is interdependent. An interdependent leadership structure capitalizes on an individual’s unique skill set and resources, and also creates an environment of both support and accountability. Our network embodies effective interdependent leadership in the form of a snowflake, in which our Core Team sits at the center surrounded by the Network Leadership Team made of individual coaches that guide multiple teams of organizers and advocates.
The PIH Engage Core Team develops strategies, narrative, resources, and tactics to support the Network Leadership Team in growing introspectively and fostering honest community building and actions for other coaches in the PIHE network to advocate for restorative justice, recognizing the responsibility of the US to help fund global health infrastructure.
The Core Team consists of the Manager of Grassroots Strategy, the Community Organizer for Advocacy, the Community Organizer for Fundraising, and long-term Volunteer Organizers on the Network Leadership Team.
The PIH Engage Network Leadership Team facilitates the development of a network of leaders and teams that will help advance the right to health through their roles as students, professionals, and organizers, culminating in the mitigation of global health inequities. We aim to accomplish this by coaching leads through effective organizing strategy and potential challenges, committing to the highest level of mutual accountability and consistent communication, and fostering meaningful relationships that promote growth and sustain impactful change.
The Network Leadership team consists of long-term Engagers who each guide teams in our network.
Team Coordinators work with the Network Leadership Team to create year-long campaign strategy, set clear fundraising, advocacy, and community-building goals, and partner with community leaders to achieve campaign goals. They build a local leadership team with an Advocacy Lead, Fundraising Lead, and Community Building Lead, plan and executing regular team meetings, holding leadership team members accountable for their commitments, and taking responsibility for enabling team members to accomplish shared campaign goals. Team Coordinators link their teams to the broader PIH Engage network and ensure team participation in network-wide events, participate in discussions on team progress, challenges, and successes with Network Leadership Team, and regularly prepare for critical discussion on team progress to facilitate positive and constructive communication within their team.
Advocacy Leads spearhead their teams' efforts to contribute to policy change. They become experts in understanding what PIH Engage means by advocacy, and are trained in (and will train their team in) a number of advocacy tactics. Throughout the course of the year, the Advocacy Lead organizes and oversees call-ins, meetings with members of Congress, birddogging efforts, publications in local media, and/or rallies.
Fundraising Leads focus on growing the number of new donors to Partners In Health to fund PIH’s work. They oversee all of their teams' fundraising efforts, taking charge when necessary, but also enabling the leadership of other members of the team. Over the course of the year, they spearhead their teams' personal fundraising campaign, and also take charge of larger fundraising events, like Strides in Solidarity.
Community Building Leads focus on building people power for their local team. They lead member recruitment, build relationships across the team, and develop a culture of honesty, activism, and deep commitment. They are responsible for leading their team through provided resources including the Crash Course and the PIH Engage global health curriculum to achieve all learning objectives.
