IV. Die Wahrheit der Gewißheit seiner selbst

In den bisherigen Weisen der Gewißheit ist dem Bewußtsein das Wahre etwas anderes als es selbst. Der Begriff dieses Wahren verschwindet aber in der Erfahrung von ihm; wie der Gegenstand unmittelbar an sich war, das Seiende der sinnlichen Gewißheit, das konkrete Ding der Wahrnehmung, die Kraft des Verstandes, so erweist er sich vielmehr nicht in Wahrheit zu sein, sondern diesAn-sich ergibt sich als eine Weise, wie er nur für ein Anderes ist; der Begriff von ihm hebt sich an dem wirklichen Gegenstande auf, oder die erste unmittelbare Vorstellung in der Erfahrung, und die Gewißheit ging in der Wahrheit verloren. Nunmehr aber ist dies entstanden, was in diesen frühern Verhältnissen nicht zustande kam, nämlich eine Gewißheit, welche ihrer Wahrheit gleich ist, denn die Gewißheit ist sich selbst ihr Gegenstand, und das Bewußtsein ist sich selbst das Wahre. Es ist darin zwar auch ein Anderssein; das Bewußtsein unterscheidet nämlich, aber ein solches, das für es zugleich ein nicht Unterschiedenes ist. Nennen wir Begriff die Bewegung des Wissens, den Gegenstand aber, das Wissen als ruhige Einheit, oder als Ich, so sehen wir, daß nicht nur für uns, sondern für das Wissen selbst der Gegenstand dem Begriffe entspricht.—Oder auf die andere Weise, den Begriff das genannt, was der Gegenstand an sich ist, den Gegenstand aber das, was er als Gegenstand, oder für ein Anderes ist, so erhellt, daß das An-sich-sein und das Für-ein-anderes-sein dasselbe ist; denn das An-sich ist das Bewußtsein; es ist aber ebenso dasjenige, für welches ein anderes (das An-sich) ist; und es ist für es, daß das An-sich des Gegenstandes und das Sein desselben für ein Anderes dasselbe ist; Ich ist der Inhalt der Beziehung und das Beziehen selbst; es ist es selbst gegen ein Anderes, und greift zugleich über dies Andre über, das für es ebenso nur es selbst ist.

Mit dem Selbstbewußtsein sind wir also nun in das einheimische Reich der Wahrheit eingetreten. Es ist zu sehen, wie die Gestalt des Selbstbewußtseins zunächst auftritt. Betrachten wir diese neue Gestalt des Wissens, das Wissen von sich selbst, im Verhältnisse zu dem Vorhergehenden, dem Wissen von einem Andern, so ist dies zwar verschwunden; aber seine Momente haben sich zugleich ebenso aufbewahrt; und der Verlust besteht darin, daß sie hier vorhanden sind, wie sie an sich sind. Das Sein der Meinung, die Einzelnheit und die ihr entgegengesetzte Allgemeinheit der Wahrnehmung, sowie das leere Innere des Verstandes, sind nicht mehr als Wesen, sondern als Momente des Selbstbewußtseins, das heißt als Abstraktionen oder Unterschiede, welche für das Bewußtsein selbst zugleich nichtig, oder keine Unterschiede und rein verschwindende Wesen sind. Es scheint also nur das Hauptmoment selbst verlorengegangen zu sein, nämlich das einfache selbstständige Bestehen für das Bewußtsein. Aber in der Tat ist das Selbstbewußtsein die Reflexion aus dem Sein der sinnlichen und wahrgenommenen Welt, und wesentlich die Rückkehr aus dem Anderssein. Es ist als Selbstbewußtsein Bewegung; aber indem es nur sich selbst als sich selbst von sich unterscheidet, so ist ihm der Unterschied unmittelbar als ein Anderssein aufgehoben; der Unterschied ist nicht, und es nur die bewegungslose Tautologie des: Ich bin Ich; indem ihm der Unterschied nicht auch die Gestalt des Seins hat, ist es nicht Selbstbewußtsein. Es ist hiemit für es das Anderssein, als ein Sein, oder als unterschiedenes Moment; aber es ist für es auch die Einheit seiner selbst mit diesem Unterschiede, als zweites unterschiedenes Moment. Mit jenem ersten Momente ist das Selbstbewußtsein als Bewußtsein, und für es die ganze Ausbreitung der sinnlichen Welt erhalten; aber zugleich nur als auf das zweite Moment, die Einheit des Selbstbewußtseins mit sich selbst, bezogen; und sie ist hiemit für es ein Bestehen, welches aber nur Erscheinung, oder Unterschied ist, der an sich kein Sein hat. Dieser Gegensatz seiner Erscheinung und seiner Wahrheit hat aber nur die Wahrheit, nämlich die Einheit des Selbstbewußtseins mit sich selbst, zu seinem Wesen; diese muß ihm wesentlich werden; das heißt, es ist Begierde überhaupt. Das Bewußtsein hat als Selbstbewußtsein nunmehr einen gedoppelten Gegenstand, den einen, den unmittelbaren, den Gegenstand der sinnlichen Gewißheit, und des Wahrnehmens, der aber für es mit dem Charakter des Negativen bezeichnet ist, und den zweiten, nämlich sich selbst, welcher das wahre Wesen, und zunächst nur erst im Gegensatze des ersten vorhanden ist. Das Selbstbewußtsein stellt sich hierin als die Bewegung dar, worin dieser Gegensatz aufgehoben, und ihm die Gleichheit seiner selbst mit sich wird.

Der Gegenstand, welcher für das Selbstbewußtsein das Negative ist, ist aber seinerseits für uns oder an sich ebenso in sich zurückgegangen als das Bewußtsein andererseits. Er ist durch diese Reflexion in sich Leben geworden. Was das Selbstbewußtsein als seiend von sich unterscheidet, hat auch insofern, als es seiend gesetzt ist, nicht bloß die Weise der sinnlichen Gewißheit und der Wahrnehmung an ihm, sondern es ist in sich reflektiertes Sein, und der Gegenstand der unmittelbaren Begierde ist ein Lebendiges. Denn das An-sich, oder das allgemeine Resultat des Verhältnisses des Verstandes zu dem Innern der Dinge, ist das Unterscheiden des nicht zu Unterscheidenden, oder die Einheit des Unterschiednen. Diese Einheit aber ist ebensosehr, wie wir gesehen, ihr Abstoßen von sich selbst, und dieser Begriff entzweit sich in den Gegensatz des Selbstbewußtseins und des Lebens; jenes die Einheit, für welche die unendliche Einheit der Unterschiede ist; dieses aber ist nur diese Einheit selbst, so daß sie nicht zugleich für sich selbst ist. So selbstständig also das Bewußtsein, ebenso selbstständig ist an sich sein Gegenstand. Das Selbstbewußtsein, welches schlechthin für sich ist, und seinen Gegenstand unmittelbar mit dem Charakter des Negativen bezeichnet, oder zunächst Begierde ist, wird daher vielmehr die Erfahrung der Selbständigkeit desselben machen.

Die Bestimmung des Lebens, wie sie sich aus dem Begriffe oder dem allgemeinen Resultate ergibt, mit welchem wir in diese Sphäre eintreten, ist hinreichend, es zu bezeichnen, ohne daß seine Natur weiter daraus zu entwickeln wäre; ihr Kreis beschließt sich in folgenden Momenten. Das Wesen ist die Unendlichkeit als das Aufgehobensein aller Unterschiede, die reine achsendrehende Bewegung, die Ruhe ihrer selbst als absolut unruhigen Unendlichkeit; die Selbstständigkeit selbst, in welcher die Unterschiede der Bewegung aufgelöst sind; das einfache Wesen der Zeit, das in dieser Sichselbstgleichheit die gediegene Gestalt des Raumes hat. Die Unterschiede sind aber an diesem einfachen allgemeinen Medium ebensosehr als Unterschiede; denn diese allgemeine Flüssigkeit hat ihre negative Natur nur, indem sie ein Aufheben derselben ist; aber sie kann die unterschiednen nicht aufheben, wenn sie nicht ein Bestehen haben. Eben diese Flüssigkeit ist als die sichselbstgleiche Selbstständigkeit selbst das Bestehen, oder die Substanz derselben, worin sie also als unterschiedene Glieder und fürsichseiende Teile sind. Das Sein hat nicht mehr die Bedeutung der Abstraktion des Seins, noch ihre reine Wesenheit, der Abstraktion der Allgemeinheit; sondern ihr Sein ist eben jene einfache flüssige Substanz der reinen Bewegung in sich selbst. Der Unterschied dieser Glieder gegeneinander aber als Unterschied besteht überhaupt in keiner anderer Bestimmtheit als der Bestimmtheit der Momente der Unendlichkeit oder der reinen Bewegung selbst.

Die selbstständigen Glieder sind für sich; dieses Für-sich-sein ist aber vielmehr ebenso unmittelbar ihre Reflexion in die Einheit, als diese Einheit die Entzweiung in die selbstständigen Gestalten ist. Die Einheit ist entzweit, weil sie absolut negative oder unendliche Einheit ist; und weil sie das Bestehen ist, so hat auch der Unterschied Selbstständigkeit nur an ihr. Diese Selbständigkeit der Gestalt erscheint als ein Bestimmtes, für Anderes, denn sie ist ein Entzweites; und das Aufheben der Entzweiung geschieht insofern durch ein Anderes. Aber es ist ebensosehr an ihr selbst; denn eben jene Flüssigkeit ist die Substanz der selbstständigen Gestalten; diese Substanz aber ist unendlich; die Gestalt ist darum in ihrem Bestehen selbst die Entzweiung, oder das Aufheben ihres Für-sich-seins.

Unterscheiden wir die hierin enthaltenen Momente näher, so sehen wir, daß wir zum ersten Momente das Bestehen der selbstständigen Gestalten, oder die Unterdrückung dessen haben, was das Unterscheiden an sich ist, nämlich nicht an sich zu sein und kein Bestehen zu haben. Das zweite Moment aber ist die Unterwerfung jenes Bestehens unter die Unendlichkeit des Unterschiedes. Im ersten Momente ist die bestehende Gestalt; als fürsichseiend, oder in ihrer Bestimmtheit unendliche Substanz tritt sie gegen die allgemeine Substanz auf, verleugnet diese Flüssigkeit und Kontinuität mit ihr und behauptet sich als nicht in diesem Allgemeinen aufgelöst, sondern vielmehr als durch die Absonderung von dieser ihrer unorganischen Natur, und durch das Aufzehren derselben sich erhaltend. Das Leben in dem allgemeinen flüssigen Medium, ein ruhiges Auseinanderlegen der Gestalten wird eben dadurch zur Bewegung derselben, oder zum Leben als Prozeß. Die einfache allgemeine Flüssigkeit ist das An-sich, und der Unterschied der Gestalten das Andere. Aber diese Flüssigkeit wird selbst durch diesen Unterschied das Andere; denn sie ist itzt für den Unterschied, welcher an und für sich selbst, und daher die unendliche Bewegung ist, von welcher jenes ruhige Medium aufgezehrt wird, das Leben als Lebendiges.—Diese Verkehrung aber ist darum wieder die Verkehrtheit an sich selbst; was auf gezehrt wird, ist das Wesen; die auf Kosten des Allgemeinen sich erhaltende, und das Gefühl ihrer Einheit mit sich selbst sich gebende Individualität hebt gerade damit ihren Gegensatz des Andern, durch welchen sie für sich ist, auf; die Einheit mit sich selbst, welche sie sich gibt, ist gerade die Flüssigkeit der Unterschiede, oder die allgemeine Auflösung. Aber umgekehrt ist das Aufheben des individuellen Bestehens ebenso das Erzeugen desselben. Denn da das Wesen der individuellen Gestalt, das allgemeine Leben, und das für sich Seiende an sich einfache Substanz ist, so hebt es, indem es das Andre in sich setzt, diese seine Einfachheit, oder sein Wesen auf, d.h. es entzweit sie, und dies Entzweien der unterschiedslosen Flüssigkeit ist eben das Setzen der Individualität. Die einfache Substanz des Lebens also ist die Entzweiung ihrer selbst in Gestalten, und zugleich die Auflösung dieser bestehenden Unterschiede; und die Auflösung der Entzweiung ist ebensosehr Entzweien oder ein Gliedern. Es fallen damit die beiden Seiten der ganzen Bewegung, welche unterschieden wurden, nämlich die in dem allgemeinen Medium der Selbstständigkeit ruhig auseinandergelegte Gestaltung und der Prozeß des Lebens ineinander; der letztere ist ebensosehr Gestaltung, als er das Aufheben der Gestalt ist; und das erste, die Gestaltung, ist ebensosehr ein Aufheben, als sie die Gliederung ist. Das flüssige Element ist selbst nur die Abstraktion des Wesens, oder es ist nur als Gestalt wirklich; und daß es sich gliedert, ist wieder ein Entzweien des Gegliederten, oder ein Auflösen desselben. Dieser ganze Kreislauf macht das Leben aus, weder das, was zuerst ausgesprochen wird, die unmittelbare Kontinuität und Gediegenheit seines Wesens, noch die bestehende Gestalt und das für sich seiende Diskrete, noch der reine Prozeß derselben, noch auch das einfache Zusammenfassen dieser Momente, sondern das sich entwickelnde, und seine Entwicklung auflösende und in dieser Bewegung sich einfach erhaltende Ganze.

Indem von der ersten unmittelbaren Einheit ausgegangen, und durch die Momente der Gestaltung und des Prozesses hindurch zur Einheit dieser beiden Momente, und damit wieder zur ersten einfachen Substanz zurückgekehrt wird, so ist diese reflektierte Einheit eine andere als die erste. Gegen jene unmittelbare, oder als ein Sein ausgesprochene, ist diese zweite die allgemeine, welche alle diese Momente als aufgehobne in ihr hat. Sie ist die einfache Gattung, welche in der Bewegung des Lebens selbst nicht für sich *als* dies Einfache existiert; sondern in diesem Resultate verweist das Leben auf ein anderes, als es ist, nämlich auf das Bewußtsein, für welches es als diese Einheit, oder als Gattung, ist.

Dies andere Leben aber, für welches die Gattung als solche und welches für sich selbst Gattung ist, das Selbstbewußtsein, ist sich zunächst nur als dieses einfache Wesen, und hat sich als reines Ich zum Gegenstande; in seiner Erfahrung, die nun zu betrachten ist, wird sich ihm dieser abstrakte Gegenstand bereichern, und die Entfaltung erhalten, welche wir an dem Leben gesehen haben.

Das einfache Ich ist diese Gattung oder das einfache Allgemeine, für welches die Unterschiede keine sind, nur, indem es negatives Wesen der gestalteten selbstständigen Momente ist; und das Selbstbewußtsein hiemit seiner selbst nur gewiß, durch das Aufheben dieses andern, das sich ihm als selbstständiges Leben darstellt; es ist Begierde. Der Nichtigkeit dieses Andern gewiß, setzt esfür sich dieselbe als seine Wahrheit, vernichtet den selbstständigen Gegenstand und gibt sich dadurch die Gewißheit seiner selbst, als wahre Gewißheit, als solche, welche ihm selbst aufgegenständliche Weise geworden ist.

In dieser Befriedigung aber macht es die Erfahrung von der Selbstständigkeit seines Gegenstandes. Die Begierde und die in ihrer Befriedigung erreichte Gewißheit seiner selbst ist bedingt durch ihn, denn sie ist durch Aufheben dieses Andern; daß dies Aufheben sei, muß dies Andere sein. Das Selbstbewußtsein vermag also durch seine negative Beziehung ihn nicht aufzuheben; es erzeugt ihn darum vielmehr wieder, so wie die Begierde. Es ist in der Tat ein anderes als das Selbstbewußtsein, das Wesen der Begierde; und durch diese Erfahrung ist ihm selbst diese Wahrheit geworden. Zugleich aber ist es ebenso absolut für sich, und ist dies nur durch Aufheben des Gegenstandes, und es muß ihm seine Befriedigung werden, denn es ist die Wahrheit. Um der Selbstständigkeit des Gegenstandes willen kann es daher zur Befriedigung nur gelangen, indem dieser selbst die Negation an ihm vollzieht; und er muß diese Negation seiner selbst an sich vollziehen, denn er ist an sich das Negative, und muß für das Andre sein, was er ist. Indem er die Negation an sich selbst ist, und darin zugleich selbstständig ist, ist er Bewußtsein. An dem Leben, welches der Gegenstand der Begierde ist, ist die Negation entweder an einem Andern, nämlich an der Begierde, oder als Bestimmtheit gegen eine andere gleichgültige Gestalt, oder als seine unorganische allgemeine Natur. Diese allgemeine selbstständige Natur aber, an der die Negation als absolute ist, ist die Gattung als solche, oder als Selbstbewußtsein. Das Selbstbewußtsein erreicht seine Befriedigung nur in einem andern Selbstbewußtsein.

In diesen drei Momenten ist erst der Begriff des Selbstbewußtseins vollendet; a) reines ununterschiedenes Ich ist sein erster unmittelbarer Gegenstand. b) Diese Unmittelbarkeit ist aber selbst absolute Vermittlung, sie ist nur als Aufheben des selbstständigen Gegenstandes, oder sie ist Begierde. Die Befriedigung der Begierde ist zwar die Reflexion des Selbstbewußtseins in sich selbst, oder die zur Wahrheit gewordene Gewißheit. c) Aber die Wahrheit derselben ist vielmehr die gedoppelte Reflexion, die Verdopplung des Selbstbewußtseins. Es ist ein Gegenstand für das Bewußtsein, welcher an sich selbst sein Anderssein oder den Unterschied als einen nichtigen setzt, und darin selbstständig ist. Die unterschiedene nur lebendige Gestalt hebt wohl im Prozesse des Lebens selbst auch ihre Selbstständigkeit auf, aber sie hört mit ihrem Unterschiede auf, zu sein, was sie ist; der Gegenstand des Selbstbewußtseins ist aber ebenso selbstständig in dieser Negativität seiner selbst; und damit ist er für sich selbst Gattung, allgemeine Flüssigkeit in der Eigenheit seiner Absonderung; er ist lebendiges Selbstbewußtsein.

Es ist ein Selbstbewußtsein für ein Selbstbewußtsein. Erst hiedurch ist es in der Tat; denn erst hierin wird für es die Einheit seiner selbst in seinem Anderssein; Ich, das der Gegenstand seines Begriffs ist, ist in der Tat nicht Gegenstand; der Gegenstand der Begierde aber ist nur selbstständig, denn er ist die allgemeine unvertilgbare Substanz, das flüssige sichselbstgleiche Wesen. Indem ein Selbstbewußtsein der Gegenstand ist, ist er ebensowohl ich wie Gegenstand.—Hiemit ist schon der Begriff des Geistes für uns vorhanden. Was für das Bewußtsein weiter wird, ist die Erfahrung, was der Geist ist, diese absolute Substanz, welche in der vollkommenen Freiheit und Selbstständigkeit ihres Gegensatzes, nämlich verschiedener für sich seiender Selbstbewußtsein, die Einheit derselben ist; Ich, das Wir, und Wir, das Ich ist. Das Bewußtsein hat erst in dem Selbstbewußtsein, als dem Begriffe des Geistes, seinen Wendungspunkt, auf dem es aus dem farbigten Scheine des sinnlichen Diesseits, und aus der leeren Nacht des übersinnlichen Jenseits in den geistigen Tag der Gegenwart einschreitet.

A. Selbstständigkeit und Unselbstständigkeit des Selbstbewußtseins; Herrschaft und Knechtschaft

Das Selbstbewußtsein ist an und für sich, indem, und dadurch, daß es für ein Anderes an und für sich ist; d.h. es ist nur als ein Anerkanntes. Der Begriff dieser seiner Einheit in seiner Verdopplung, der sich im Selbstbewußtsein realisierenden Unendlichkeit, ist eine vielseitige und vieldeutige Verschränkung, so daß die Momente derselben teils genau auseinandergehalten, teils in dieser Unterscheidung zugleich auch als nicht unterschieden, oder immer in ihrer entgegengesetzten Bedeutung genommen und erkannt werden müssen. Die Doppelsinnigkeit des Unterschiedenen liegt in dem Wesen des Selbstbewußtseins, unendlich, oder unmittelbar das Gegenteil der Bestimmtheit, in der es gesetzt ist, zu sein. Die Auseinanderlegung des Begriffs dieser geistigen Einheit in ihrer Verdopplung stellt uns die Bewegung des Anerkennens dar.

Es ist für das Selbstbewußtsein ein anderes Selbstbewußtsein; es ist außer sich gekommen. Dies hat die gedoppelte Bedeutung, erstlich, es hat sich selbst verloren, denn es findet sich als einanderes Wesen; zweitens, es hat damit das Andere aufgehoben, denn es sieht auch nicht das Andere als Wesen, sondern sich selbst im Andern.

Es muß dies sein Anderssein aufheben; dies ist das Aufheben des ersten Doppelsinnes, und darum selbst ein zweiter Doppelsinn; erstlich, es muß darauf gehen, das andere selbstständige Wesen aufzuheben, um dadurch seiner als des Wesens gewiß zu werden; zweitens geht es hiemit darauf, sich selbst aufzuheben, denn dies Andere ist es selbst.

Dies doppelsinnige Aufheben seines doppelsinnigen Andersseins ist ebenso eine doppelsinnige Rückkehr in sich selbst; denn erstlich erhält es durch das Aufheben sich selbst zurück; denn es wird sich wieder gleich durch das Aufheben seines Andersseins; zweitens aber gibt es das andere Selbstbewußtsein ihm wieder ebenso zurück, denn es war sich im Andern, es hebt dies sein Sein im Andern auf, entläßt also das andere wieder frei.

Diese Bewegung des Selbstbewußtseins in der Beziehung auf ein anderes Selbstbewußtsein ist aber auf diese Weise vorgestellt worden, als das Tun des Einen; aber dieses Tun des Einen hat selbst die gedoppelte Bedeutung, ebensowohl sein Tun als das Tun des Andern zu sein; denn das Andere ist ebenso selbstständig, in sich beschlossen, und es ist nichts in ihm, was nicht durch es selbst ist. Das erste hat den Gegenstand nicht vor sich, wie er nur für die Begierde zunächst ist, sondern einen für sich seienden selbstständigen, über welchen es darum nichts für sich vermag, wenn er nicht an sich selbst dies tut, was es an ihm tut. Die Bewegung ist also schlechthin die gedoppelte beider Selbstbewußtsein. Jedes sieht das Andre dasselbe tun, was es tut; jedes tut Selbst, was es an das Andre fodert; und tut darum, was es tut, auch nur insofern, als das Andre dasselbe tut; das einseitige Tun wäre unnütz; weil, was geschehen soll, nur durch beide zustande kommen kann.

Das Tun ist also nicht nur insofern doppelsinnig, als es ein Tun ebensowohl gegen sich als gegen das Andre, sondern auch insofern, als es ungetrennt ebensowohl das Tun des Einen als des Andern ist.

In dieser Bewegung sehen wir sich den Prozeß wiederholen, der sich als Spiel der Kräfte darstellte, aber im Bewußtsein. Was in jenem für uns war, ist hier für die Extreme selbst. Die Mitte ist das Selbstbewußtsein, welches sich in die Extreme zersetzt, und jedes Extrem ist diese Austauschung seiner Bestimmtheit, und absoluter Übergang in das entgegengesetzte. Als Bewußtsein aber kommt es wohl außer sich, jedoch ist es in seinem Außer-sich-sein zugleich in sich zurückgehalten, für sich, und sein Außer-sich ist für es. Es ist für es, daß es unmittelbar anderes Bewußtseinist, und nicht ist; und ebenso, daß dies Andere nur für sich ist, indem es sich als für sich Seiendes aufhebt, und nur im Für-sich-sein des Andern für sich ist. Jedes ist dem andern die Mitte, durch welche jedes sich mit sich selbst vermittelt und zusammenschließt, und jedes sich und dem Andern unmittelbares für sich seiendes Wesen, welches zugleich nur durch diese Vermittlung so für sich ist. Sie anerkennen sich als gegenseitig sich anerkennend.

Dieser reine Begriff des Anerkennens, der Verdopplung des Selbstbewußtseins in seiner Einheit, ist nun zu betrachten, wie sein Prozeß für das Selbstbewußtsein erscheint. Er wird zuerst die Seite der Ungleichheit beider darstellen, oder das Heraustreten der Mitte in die Extreme, welche als Extreme sich entgegengesetzt, und das eine nur Anerkanntes, der andre nur Anerkennendes ist.

Das Selbstbewußtsein ist zunächst einfaches Für-sich-sein, sichselbstgleich durch das Ausschließen alles andern aus sich; sein Wesen und absoluter Gegenstand ist ihm Ich; und es ist in dieserUnmittelbarkeit, oder in diesem Sein seines Für-sich-seins, Einzelnes. Was Anderes für es ist, ist als unwesentlicher, mit dem Charakter des Negativen bezeichneter Gegenstand. Aber das Andre ist auch ein Selbstbewußtsein; es tritt ein Individuum einem Individuum gegenüber auf. So unmittelbar auftretend sind sie füreinander in der Weise gemeiner Gegenstände; selbstständigeGestalten, in das Sein des Lebens—denn als Leben hat sich hier der seiende Gegenstand bestimmt—versenkte Bewußtsein, welche füreinander die Bewegung der absoluten Abstraktion, alles unmittelbare Sein zu vertilgen, und nur das rein negative Sein des sichselbstgleichen Bewußtseins zu sein, noch nicht vollbracht, oder sich einander noch nicht als reines Für-sich-sein, das heißt als _Selbst_bewußtsein dargestellt haben. Jedes ist wohl seiner selbst gewiß, aber nicht des Andern, und darum hat seine eigne Gewißheit von sich noch keine Wahrheit; denn seine Wahrheit wäre nur, daß sein eignes Für-sich-sein sich ihm als selbstständiger Gegenstand, oder, was dasselbe ist, der Gegenstand sich als diese reine Gewißheit seiner selbst dargestellt hätte. Dies aber ist nach dem Begriffe des Anerkennens nicht möglich, als daß wie der Andere für ihn, so er für den Andern, jeder an sich selbst durch sein eigenes Tun, und wieder durch das Tun des andern, diese reine Abstraktion des Für-sich-seins vollbringt.

Die Darstellung seiner aber als der reinen Abstraktion des Selbstbewußtseins besteht darin, sich als reine Negation seiner gegenständlichen Weise zu zeigen, oder es zu zeigen, an kein bestimmtes Dasein geknüpft, an die allgemeine Einzelnheit des Daseins überhaupt nicht, nicht an das Leben geknüpft zu sein. Diese Darstellung ist das gedoppelte Tun; Tun des Andern, und Tun durch sich selbst. Insofern es Tun des Andern ist, geht also jeder auf den Tod des Andern. Darin aber ist auch das zweite, das Tun durch sich selbst, vorhanden; denn jenes schließt das Daransetzen des eignen Lebens in sich. Das Verhältnis beider Selbstbewußtsein ist also so bestimmt, daß sie sich selbst und einander durch den Kampf auf Leben und Tod bewähren.—Sie müssen in diesen Kampf gehen, denn sie müssen die Gewißheit ihrer selbst, für sich zu sein, zur Wahrheit an dem Andern und an ihnen selbst erheben. Und es ist allein das Daransetzen des Lebens, wodurch die Freiheit, wodurch es bewährt wird, daß dem Selbstbewußtsein nicht das Sein, nicht die unmittelbare Weise, wie es auftritt, nicht sein Versenktsein in die Ausbreitung des Lebens—das Wesen, sondern daß an ihm nichts vorhanden, was für es nicht verschwindendes Moment wäre, daß es nur reines Für-sich-sein ist. Das Individuum, welches das Leben nicht gewagt hat, kann wohl als Person anerkannt werden; aber es hat die Wahrheit dieses Anerkanntseins als eines selbstständigen Selbstbewußtseins nicht erreicht. Ebenso muß jedes auf den Tod des andern gehen, wie es sein Leben daransetzt; denn das Andre gilt ihm nicht mehr als es selbst; sein Wesen stellt sich ihm als ein Andres dar, es ist außer sich; es muß sein Außersichsein aufheben; das Andre ist mannigfaltig befangenes und seiendes Bewußtsein; es muß sein Anderssein als reines Für-sich-sein oder als absolute Negation anschauen.

Diese Bewährung aber durch den Tod hebt ebenso die Wahrheit, welche daraus hervorgehen sollte, als damit auch die Gewißheit seiner selbst überhaupt auf; denn wie das Leben die natürlichePosition des Bewußtseins, die Selbstständigkeit ohne die absolute Negativität, ist, so ist er die natürliche Negation desselben, die Negation ohne die Selbstständigkeit, welche also ohne die geforderte Bedeutung des Anerkennens bleibt. Durch den Tod ist zwar die Gewißheit geworden, daß beide ihr Leben wagten, und es an ihnen und an dem Andern verachteten; aber nicht für die, welche diesen Kampf bestanden. Sie heben ihr in dieser fremden Wesenheit, welches das natürliche Dasein ist, gesetztes Bewußtsein, oder sie heben sich, und werden als die für sich sein wollenden Extreme aufgehoben. Es verschwindet aber damit aus dem Spiele des Wechsels das wesentliche Moment, sich in Extreme entgegengesetzter Bestimmtheiten zu zersetzen; und die Mitte fällt in eine tote Einheit zusammen, welche in tote, bloß seiende, nicht entgegengesetzte Extreme zersetzt ist; und die beiden geben und empfangen sich nicht gegenseitig voneinander durch das Bewußtsein zurück, sondern lassen einander nur gleichgültig, als Dinge, frei. Ihre Tat ist die abstrakte Negation, nicht die Negation des Bewußtseins, welches so aufhebt, daß es das Aufgehobene aufbewahrt und erhält, und hiermit sein Aufgehobenwerden überlebt.

In dieser Erfahrung wird es dem Selbstbewußtsein, daß ihm das Leben so wesentlich als das reine Selbstbewußtsein ist. Im unmittelbaren Selbstbewußtsein ist das einfache Ich der absolute Gegenstand, welcher aber für uns oder an sich die absolute Vermittlung ist, und die bestehende Selbstständigkeit zum wesentlichen Momente hat. Die Auflösung jener einfachen Einheit ist das Resultat der ersten Erfahrung; es ist durch sie ein reines Selbstbewußtsein, und ein Bewußtsein gesetzt, welches nicht rein für sich, sondern für ein Anderes, das heißt, als seiendes Bewußtsein oder Bewußtsein in der Gestalt der Dingheit ist. Beide Momente sind wesentlich;—da sie zunächst ungleich und entgegengesetzt sind, und ihre Reflexion in die Einheit sich noch nicht ergeben hat, so sind sie als zwei entgegengesetzte Gestalten des Bewußtseins; die eine das selbstständige, welchem das Für-sich-sein, die andere das unselbstständige, dem das Leben oder das Sein für ein Anderes das Wesen ist; jenes ist der Herr, dies der Knecht.

Der Herr ist das für sich seiende Bewußtsein, aber nicht mehr nur der Begriff desselben, sondern für sich seiendes Bewußtsein, welches durch ein anderes Bewußtsein mit sich vermittelt ist, nämlich durch ein solches, zu dessen Wesen es gehört, daß es mit selbstständigem Sein oder der Dingheit überhaupt synthesiert ist. Der Herr bezieht sich auf diese beiden Momente, auf ein Ding, als solches, den Gegenstand der Begierde, und auf das Bewußtsein, dem die Dingheit das Wesentliche ist; und, indem er a) als Begriff des Selbstbewußtseins unmittelbare Beziehung des Für-sich-seins ist, aber b) nunmehr zugleich als Vermittlung, oder als ein Für-sich-sein, welches nur durch ein Anderes für sich ist, so bezieht er sich a) unmittelbar auf beide, und b) mittelbar auf jedes durch das andere. Der Herr bezieht sich auf den Knecht mittelbar durch das selbstständige Sein; denn eben hieran ist der Knecht gehalten; es ist seine Kette, von der er im Kampfe nicht abstrahieren konnte, und darum sich als unselbstständig, seine Selbstständigkeit in der Dingheit zu haben, erwies. Der Herr aber ist die Macht über dies Sein, denn er erwies im Kampfe, daß es ihm nur als ein Negatives gilt; indem er die Macht darüber, dies Sein aber die Macht über den Andern ist, so hat er in diesem Schlusse diesen andern unter sich. Ebenso bezieht sich der Herrmittelbar durch den Knecht auf das Ding; der Knecht bezieht sich, als Selbstbewußtsein überhaupt, auf das Ding auch negativ und hebt es auf; aber es ist zugleich selbstständig für ihn, und er kann darum durch sein Negieren nicht bis zur Vernichtung mit ihm fertig werden, oder er bearbeitet es nur. Dem Herrn dagegen wird durch diese Vermittlung die unmittelbare Beziehung als die reine Negation desselben, oder der Genuß; was der Begierde nicht gelang, gelingt ihm, damit fertig zu werden, und im Genusse sich zu befriedigen. Der Begierde gelang dies nicht wegen der Selbstständigkeit des Dinges; der Herr aber, der den Knecht zwischen es und sich eingeschoben, schließt sich dadurch nur mit der Unselbstständigkeit des Dinges zusammen, und genießt es rein; die Seite der Selbstständigkeit aber überläßt er dem Knechte, der es bearbeitet.

In diesen beiden Momenten wird für den Herrn sein Anerkanntsein durch ein anderes Bewußtsein; denn dieses setzt sich in ihnen als Unwesentliches, einmal in der Bearbeitung des Dings, das anderemal in der Abhängigkeit von einem bestimmten Dasein; in beiden kann es nicht über das Sein Meister werden und zur absoluten Negation gelangen. Es ist also hierin dies Moment des Anerkennens vorhanden, daß das andere Bewußtsein sich als Für-sich-sein aufhebt, und hiemit selbst das tut, was das erste gegen es tut. Ebenso das andere Moment, daß dies Tun des zweiten das eigne Tun des ersten ist; denn, was der Knecht tut, ist eigentlich Tun des Herrn; diesem ist nur das Für-sich-sein, das Wesen; er ist die reine negative Macht, der das Ding nichts ist, und also das reine wesentliche Tun in diesem Verhältnisse; der Knecht aber ein nicht reines, sondern unwesentliches Tun. Aber zum eigentlichen Anerkennen fehlt das Moment, daß, was der Herr gegen den Andern tut, er auch gegen sich selbst, und was der Knecht gegen sich, er auch gegen den Andern tue. Es ist dadurch ein einseitiges und ungleiches Anerkennen entstanden.

Das unwesentliche Bewußtsein ist hierin für den Herrn der Gegenstand, welcher die Wahrheit der Gewißheit seiner selbst ausmacht. Aber es erhellt, daß dieser Gegenstand seinem Begriffe nicht entspricht, sondern daß darin, worin der Herr sich vollbracht hat, ihm vielmehr ganz etwas anderes geworden als ein selbstständiges Bewußtsein. Nicht ein solches ist für ihn, sondern vielmehr ein unselbstständiges; er also nicht des Für-sich-seins, als der Wahrheit gewiß, sondern seine Wahrheit ist vielmehr das unwesentliche Bewußtsein, und das unwesentliche Tun desselben.

Die Wahrheit des selbstständigen Bewußtseins ist demnach das knechtische Bewußtsein. Dieses erscheint zwar zunächst außer sich und nicht als die Wahrheit des Selbstbewußtsein. Aber wie die Herrschaft zeigte, daß ihr Wesen das Verkehrte dessen ist, was sie sein will, so wird auch wohl die Knechtschaft vielmehr in ihrer Vollbringung zum Gegenteile dessen werden, was sie unmittelbar ist; sie wird als in sich zurückgedrängtes Bewußtsein in sich gehen, und zur wahren Selbstständigkeit sich umkehren.

Wir sahen nur, was die Knechtschaft im Verhältnisse der Herrschaft ist. Aber sie ist Selbstbewußtsein, und was sie hienach an und für sich selbst ist, ist nun zu betrachten. Zunächst ist für die Knechtschaft der Herr das Wesen; also das selbstständige für sich seiende Bewußtsein ist ihr die Wahrheit, die jedoch *für sie* noch nicht an ihr ist. Allein sie hat diese Wahrheit der reinen Negativität und des Für-sich-seins in der Tat an ihr selbst; denn sie hat dieses Wesen an ihr erfahren. Dies Bewußtsein hat nämlich nicht um dieses oder jenes, noch für diesen oder jenen Augenblick Angst gehabt, sondern um sein ganzes Wesen; denn es hat die Furcht des Todes, des absoluten Herrn, empfunden. Es ist darin innerlich aufgelöst worden, hat durchaus in sich selbst erzittert, und alles Fixe hat in ihm gebebt. Diese reine allgemeine Bewegung, das absolute Flüssigwerden alles Bestehens ist aber das einfache Wesen des Selbstbewußtseins, die absolute Negativität, das reine Für-sich-sein, das hiemit an diesem Bewußtsein ist. Dies Moment des reinen Für-sich-sein ist auch für es, denn im Herrn ist es ihm sein Gegenstand. Es ist ferner nicht nur diese allgemeine Auflösung überhaupt, sondern im Dienen vollbringt es sie wirklich; es hebt darin in allen einzelnen Momenten seine Anhänglichkeit an natürliches Dasein auf, und arbeitet dasselbe hinweg.

Das Gefühl der absoluten Macht aber überhaupt, und im einzelnen des Dienstes ist nur die Auflösung an sich, und obzwar die Furcht des Herrn der Anfang der Weisheit ist, so ist das Bewußtsein darin für es selbst, nicht das Für-sich-sein. Durch die Arbeit kömmt es aber zu sich selbst. In dem Momente, welches der Begierde im Bewußtsein des Herrn entspricht, schien dem dienenden Bewußtsein zwar die Seite der unwesentlichen Beziehung auf das Ding zugefallen zu sein, indem das Ding darin seine Selbstständigkeit behält. Die Begierde hat sich das reine Negieren des Gegenstandes, und dadurch das unvermischte Selbstgefühl vorbehalten. Diese Befriedigung ist aber deswegen selbst nur ein Verschwinden, denn es fehlt ihr die gegenständliche Seite oder das Bestehen. Die Arbeit hingegen ist gehemmte Begierde, aufgehaltenes Verschwinden, oder sie bildet. Die negative Beziehung auf den Gegenstand wird zur Form desselben, und zu einem bleibenden; weil eben dem arbeitenden der Gegenstand Selbstständigkeit hat. Diese negative Mitte oder das formierende Tun ist zugleich die Einzelheit oder das reine Für-sich-sein des Bewußtseins, welches nun in der Arbeit außer es in das Element des Bleibens tritt; das arbeitende Bewußtsein kommt also hiedurch zur Anschauung des selbstständigen Seins, als seiner selbst.

Das Formieren hat aber nicht nur diese positive Bedeutung, daß das dienende Bewußtsein sich darin als reines Für-sich-sein zum Seienden wird; sondern auch die negative, gegen sein erstes Moment, die Furcht. Denn in dem Bilden des Dinges wird ihm die eigne Negativität, sein Für-sich-sein, nur dadurch zum Gegenstande, daß es die entgegengesetzte seiende Form aufhebt. Aber dies gegenständliche Negative ist gerade das fremde Wesen, vor welchem es gezittert hat. Nun aber zerstört es dies fremde Negative, setzt sich als ein solches in das Element des Bleibens; und wird hiedurch für sich selbst, ein für sich Seiendes. Im Herrn ist ihm das Für-sich-sein ein Anderes oder nur für es; in der Furcht ist das Für-sich-sein an ihm selbst; in dem Bilden wird das Für-sich-sein als sein eignes für es, und es kömmt zum Bewußtsein, daß es selbst an und für sich ist. Die Form wird dadurch, daß sie hinausgesetzt wird, ihm nicht ein Anderes als es; denn eben sie ist sein reines Für-sich-sein, das ihm darin zur Wahrheit wird. Es wird also durch dies Wiederfinden seiner durch sich selbst eigner Sinn, gerade in der Arbeit, worin es nur fremder Sinn zu sein schien.—Es sind zu dieser Reflexion die beiden Momente der Furcht und des Dienstes überhaupt, sowie des Bildens notwendig, und zugleich beide auf eine allgemeine Weise. Ohne die Zucht des Dienstes und Gehorsams bleibt die Furcht beim Formellen stehen, und verbreitet sich nicht über die bewußte Wirklichkeit des Daseins. Ohne das Bilden bleibt die Furcht innerlich und stumm, und das Bewußtsein wird nicht für es selbst. Formiert das Bewußtsein ohne die erste absolute Furcht, so ist es nur ein eitler eigner Sinn; denn seine Form oder Negativität ist nicht die Negativität an sich; und sein Formieren kann ihm daher nicht das Bewußtsein seiner als des Wesens geben. Hat es nicht die absolute Furcht, sondern nur einige Angst ausgestanden, so ist das negative Wesen ihm ein äußerliches geblieben, seine Substanz ist von ihm nicht durch und durch angesteckt. Indem nicht alle Erfüllungen seines natürlichen Bewußtseins wankend geworden, gehört es an sich noch bestimmtem Sein an; der eigne Sinn ist Eigensinn, eine Freiheit, welche noch innerhalb der Knechtschaft stehenbleibt. So wenig ihm die reine Form zum Wesen werden kann, so wenig ist sie, als Ausbreitung über das Einzelne betrachtet, allgemeines Bilden, absoluter Begriff, sondern eine Geschicklichkeit, welche nur über einiges, nicht über die allgemeine Macht und das ganze gegenständliche Wesen mächtig ist.

B. Freiheit des Selbstbewußtseins; Stoizismus, Skeptizismus und das unglückliche Bewußtsein

Dem selbstständigen Selbstbewußtsein ist einesteils nur die reine Abstraktion des Ich sein Wesen, und andernteils, indem sie sich ausbildet und sich Unterschiede gibt, wird dies Unterscheiden ihm nicht zum gegenständlichen _ansich_seienden Wesen; dies Selbstbewußtsein wird also nicht ein in seiner Einfachheit sich wahrhaft unterscheidendes, oder in dieser absoluten Unterscheidung sich gleichbleibendes Ich. Das in sich zurückgedrängte Bewußtsein hingegen wird sich im Formieren als Form der gebildeten Dinge zum Gegenstande, und an dem Herrn schaut es das Für-sich-sein zugleich als Bewußtsein an. Aber dem dienenden Bewußtsein als solchem fallen diese beiden Momente—seiner selbst als selbstständigen Gegenstandes, und dieses Gegenstandes als eines Bewußtseins, und hiemit seines eigenen Wesens—auseinander. Indem aber für uns oder an sich die Form und das Für-sich-sein dasselbe ist, und im Begriffe des selbstständigen Bewußtseins das An-sich-sein das Bewußtsein ist, so ist die Seite des An-sich-seins oder der Dingheit, welche die Form in der Arbeit erhielt, keine andere Substanz als das Bewußtsein, und es ist uns eine neue Gestalt des Selbstbewußtseins geworden; ein Bewußtsein, welches sich als die Unendlichkeit, oder reine Bewegung des Bewußtseins das Wesen ist; welches denkt, oder freies Selbstbewußtsein ist. Denn nicht als abstraktes Ich, sondern als Ich, welches zugleich die Bedeutung des An-sich-seins hat, sich Gegenstand sein, oder zum gegenständlichen Wesen sich so verhalten, daß es die Bedeutung des Für-sich-seins des Bewußtseins hat, für welches es ist, heißt denken.—Dem Denken bewegt sich der Gegenstand nicht in Vorstellungen oder Gestalten, sondern in Begriffen, das heißt in einem unterschiednen An-sich-sein, welches unmittelbar für das Bewußtsein kein unterschiednes von ihm ist. Das Vorgestellte, Gestaltete, Seiende, als solches, hat die Form, etwas anders zu sein als das Bewußtsein; ein Begriff aber ist zugleich ein Seiendes—und dieser Unterschied, insofern er an ihm selbst ist, ist sein bestimmter Inhalt—, aber darin, daß dieser Inhalt ein begriffener zugleich ist, bleibt es sich seiner Einheit mit diesem bestimmten und unterschiedenen Seienden unmittelbar bewußt; nicht wie bei der Vorstellung, worin es erst noch besonders sich zu erinnern hat, daß dies seine Vorstellung sei; sondern der Begriff ist mir unmittelbar mein Begriff. Im Denken bin Ich frei, weil ich nicht in einem Andern bin, sondern schlechthin bei mir selbst bleibe, und der Gegenstand, der mir das Wesen ist, in ungetrennter Einheit mein Für-mich-sein ist; und meine Bewegung in Begriffen ist eine Bewegung in mir selbst.—Es ist aber in dieser Bestimmung dieser Gestalt des Selbstbewußtseins wesentlich dies festzuhalten, daß sie denkendes Bewußtsein überhaupt oder ihr Gegenstand, unmittelbare Einheit des An-sich-seins und des Für-sich-seins ist. Das sich gleichnamige Bewußtsein, das sich von sich selbst abstößt, wird sich ansichseiendes Element; aber es ist sich dies Element nur erst als allgemeines Wesen überhaupt, nicht als dies gegenständliche Wesen in der Entwicklung und Bewegung seines mannigfaltigen Seins.

Diese Freiheit des Selbstbewußtseins hat bekanntlich, indem sie als ihrer bewußte Erscheinung in der Geschichte des Geistes aufgetreten ist, Stoizismus geheißen. Sein Prinzip ist, daß das Bewußtsein denkendes Wesen, und etwas nur Wesenheit für dasselbe hat, oder wahr und gut für es ist, als das Bewußtsein sich darin als denkendes Wesen verhält.

Die vielfache sich in sich unterscheidende Ausbreitung, Vereinzelung und Verwicklung des Lebens ist der Gegenstand, gegen welchen die Begierde und die Arbeit tätig ist. Dies vielfache Tun hat sich nun in die einfache Unterscheidung zusammengezogen, welche in der reinen Bewegung des Denkens ist. Nicht der Unterschied, welcher sich als bestimmtes Ding, oder als Bewußtsein eines bestimmten natürlichen Daseins, als ein Gefühl, oder als Begierde und Zweck für dieselbe, ob er durch das eigene oder durch ein fremdes Bewußtsein gesetzt sei, hat mehr Wesenheit, sondern allein der Unterschied, der ein gedachter, oder unmittelbar nicht von Mir unterschieden ist. Dies Bewußtsein ist somit negativ gegen das Verhältnis der Herrschaft und Knechtschaft; sein Tun ist, in der Herrschaft nicht seine Wahrheit an dem Knechte zu haben, noch als Knecht seine Wahrheit an dem Willen des Herrn und an seinem Dienen, sondern wie auf dem Throne so in den Fesseln, in aller Abhängigkeit seines einzelnen Daseins frei zu sein, und die Leblosigkeit sich zu erhalten, welche sich beständig aus der Bewegung des Daseins, aus dem Wirken wie aus dem Leiden, in die einfache Wesenheit des Gedankens zurückzieht. Der Eigensinn ist die Freiheit, die an eine Einzelnheit sich befestigt und innerhalb der Knechtschaft steht, der Stoizismus aber die Freiheit, welche unmittelbar immer aus ihr her, und in die reine Allgemeinheit des Gedankens zurückkömmt; als allgemeine Form des Weltgeistes nur in der Zeit einer allgemeinen Furcht und Knechtschaft, aber auch einer allgemeinen Bildung auftreten konnte, welche das Bilden bis zum Denken gesteigert hatte.

Ob nun zwar diesem Selbstbewußtsein weder ein Anderes als es, noch die reine Abstraktion des Ich das Wesen ist, sondern Ich, welches das Anderssein, aber als gedachten Unterschied an ihm hat, so daß es in seinem Anderssein unmittelbar in sich zurückgekehrt ist; so ist dies sein Wesen zugleich nur ein abstraktes Wesen. Die Freiheit des Selbstbewußtseins ist gleichgültig gegen das natürliche Dasein, hat darum dieses ebenso frei entlassen, und die Reflexion ist eine gedoppelte. Die Freiheit im Gedanken hat nur den reinen Gedanken zu ihrer Wahrheit, die ohne die Erfüllung des Lebens ist; und ist also auch nur der Begriff der Freiheit, nicht die lebendige Freiheit selbst; denn ihr ist nur erst das Denken überhaupt das Wesen, die Form als solche, welche von der Selbstständigkeit der Dinge weg, in sich zurückgegangen ist. Indem aber die Individualität als handelnd sich lebendig darstellen, oder als denkend die lebendige Welt als ein System des Gedankens fassen sollte, so müßte in dem Gedanken selbst für jene Ausbreitung ein Inhalt dessen, was gut, für diese, was wahr ist, liegen; damit durchaus, in demjenigen, was für das Bewußtsein ist, kein anderes Ingrediens wäre als der Begriff, der das Wesen ist. Allein so wie er hier als Abstraktion von der Mannigfaltigkeit der Dinge sich abtrennt, hat er keinen Inhalt an ihm selbst, sondern einen gegebenen. Das Bewußtsein vertilgt den Inhalt wohl als ein fremdes Sein, indem es ihn denkt; aber der Begriff ist bestimmter Begriff, und diese Bestimmtheit desselben ist das Fremde, das er an ihm hat. Der Stoizismus ist darum in Verlegenheit gekommen, als er, wie der Ausdruck war, nach dem Kriterium der Wahrheit überhaupt gefragt wurde, d.h. eigentlich nacheinem Inhalte des Gedankens selbst. Auf die Frage an ihn, was gut und wahr ist, hat er wieder das inhaltslose Denken selbst zur Antwort gegeben; in der Vernünftigkeit soll das Wahre und Gute bestehen. Aber diese Sichselbstgleichheit des Denkens ist nur wieder die reine Form, in welcher sich nichts bestimmt; die allgemeinen Worte von dem Wahren und Guten, der Weisheit und der Tugend, bei welchen er stehen bleiben muß, sind daher wohl im allgemeinen erhebend, aber weil sie in der Tat zu keiner Ausbreitung des Inhalts kommen können, fangen sie bald an, Langeweile zu machen.

Dieses denkende Bewußtsein so, wie es sich bestimmt hat, als die abstrakte Freiheit, ist also nur die unvollendete Negation des Andersseins; aus dem Dasein nur in sich zurückgezogen, hat es sich nicht als absolute Negation desselben an ihm vollbracht. Der Inhalt gilt ihm zwar nur als Gedanke, aber dabei auch als bestimmter, und die Bestimmtheit als solche zugleich.

Der Skeptizismus ist die Realisierung desjenigen, wovon der Stoizismus nur der Begriff,—und die wirkliche Erfahrung, was die Freiheit des Gedankens ist; sie ist an sich das Negative, und muß sich so darstellen. Mit der Reflexion des Selbstbewußtseins in den einfachen Gedanken seiner selbst ist ihr gegenüber in der Tat aus der Unendlichkeit das selbstständige Dasein oder die bleibende Bestimmtheit herausgefallen; im Skeptizismus wird nun für das Bewußtsein die gänzliche Unwesentlichkeit und Unselbstständigkeit dieses Andern; der Gedanke wird zu dem vollständigen das Sein der vielfach bestimmten Welt vernichtenden Denken, und die Negativität des freien Selbstbewußtseins wird sich an dieser mannigfaltigen Gestaltung des Lebens zur realen Negativität.—Es erhellt, daß, wie der Stoizismus dem Begriffe des _selbstständi_gen Bewußtseins, das als Verhältnis der Herrschaft und Knechtschaft erschien, entspricht, so entspricht der Skeptizismus der Realisierung desselben, als der negativen Richtung auf das Anderssein, der Begierde und der Arbeit. Aber wenn die Begierde und die Arbeit die Negation nicht für das Selbstbewußtsein ausführen konnten, so wird dagegen diese polemische Richtung gegen die vielfache Selbstständigkeit der Dinge von Erfolg sein, weil sie als in sich vorher vollendetes freies Selbstbewußtsein sich gegen sie kehrt; bestimmter, weil sie das Denken, oder die Unendlichkeit, an ihr selbst hat, und hierin die Selbstständigkeiten nach ihrem Unterschiede ihr nur als verschwindende Größen sind. Die Unterschiede, welche im reinen Denken seiner selbst nur die Abstraktion der Unterschiede sind, werden hier zu allen Unterschieden, und alles unterschiedene Sein zu einem Unterschiede des Selbstbewußtseins.

Hiedurch hat sich das Tun des Skeptizismus überhaupt, und die Weise desselben bestimmt. Er zeigt die dialektische Bewegung auf, welche die sinnliche Gewißheit, die Wahrnehmung und der Verstand ist; so wie auch die Unwesenheit desjenigen, was in dem Verhältnisse des Herrschens und des Dienens, und was für das abstrakte Denken selbst, als bestimmtes gilt. Jenes Verhältnis faßt eine bestimmte Weise zugleich in sich, in welcher auch sittliche Gesetze als Gebote der Herrschaft vorhanden sind; die Bestimmungen im abstrakten Denken aber sind Begriffe der Wissenschaft, in welche sich das inhaltslose Denken ausbreitet, und den Begriff auf eine in der Tat nur äußerliche Weise an das ihm selbstständige Sein, das seinen Inhalt ausmacht, hängt und nur bestimmte Begriffe als geltende hat, es sei, daß sie auch reine Abstraktionen sind.

Das Dialektische als negative Bewegung, wie sie unmittelbar ist, erscheint dem Bewußtsein zunächst als etwas, dem es preisgegeben, und das nicht durch es selbst ist. Als Skeptizismus hingegen ist sie Moment des Selbstbewußtseins, welchem es nicht geschieht, daß ihm, ohne zu wissen wie, sein Wahres und Reelles verschwindet, sondern welches in der Gewißheit seiner Freiheit dies andere für reell sich Gebende selbst verschwinden läßt; nicht nur das Gegenständliche als solches, sondern sein eignes Verhalten zu ihm, worin es als gegenständlich gilt, und geltend gemacht wird, also auch sein Wahrnehmen, so wie sein Befestigen dessen, was es in Gefahr ist zu verlieren, die Sophisterei, und sein aus sich bestimmtes und festgesetztes Wahres; durch welche selbstbewußte Negation es die Gewißheit seiner Freiheit sich für sich selbst verschafft, die Erfahrung derselben hervorbringt, und sie dadurch zur Wahrheit erhebt. Was verschwindet, ist das Bestimmte, oder der Unterschied, der, auf welche Weise und woher es sei, als fester und unwandelbarer sich aufstellt. Er hat nichts Bleibendes an ihm, und muß dem Denken verschwinden, weil das Unterschiedne eben dies ist, nicht an ihm selbst zu sein, sondern seine Wesenheit nur in einem Andern zu haben; das Denken aber ist die Einsicht in diese Natur des Unterschiednen, es ist das negative Wesen als einfaches.

Das skeptische Selbstbewußtsein erfährt also in dem Wandel alles dessen, was sich für es befestigen will, seine eigne Freiheit als durch es selbst sich gegeben und erhalten; es ist sich diese Ataraxie des Sich-selbst-denkens, die unwandelbare und wahrhafte Gewißheit seiner selbst. Sie geht nicht aus einem Fremden, das seine vielfache Entwicklung in sich zusammenstürzte, als ein Resultat hervor, welches sein Werden hinter sich hätte; sondern das Bewußtsein selbst ist die absolute dialektische Unruhe, dieses Gemische von sinnlichen und gedachten Vorstellungen, deren Unterschiede zusammenfallen, und deren Gleichheit sich ebenso—denn sie ist selbst die Bestimmtheit gegen das Ungleiche—wieder auflöst. Dies Bewußtsein ist aber eben hierin in der Tat, statt sichselbstgleiches Bewußtsein zu sein, nur eine schlechthin zufällige Verwirrung, der Schwindel einer sich immer erzeugenden Unordnung. Es ist dies für sich selbst; denn es selbst erhält und bringt diese sich bewegende Verwirrung hervor. Es bekennt sich darum auch dazu, es bekennt, ein ganz zufälliges, einzelnes Bewußtsein zu sein—ein Bewußtsein, das empirisch ist, sich nach dem richtet, was keine Realität für es hat, dem gehorcht, was ihm kein Wesen ist, das tut und zur Wirklichkeit bringt, was ihm keine Wahrheit hat. Aber ebenso wie es sich auf diese Weise alseinzelnes, zufälliges und in der Tat tierisches Leben, und verlornes Selbstbewußtsein gilt, macht es sich im Gegenteile auch wieder zum allgemeinen sichselbstgleichen; denn es ist die Negativität aller Einzelnheit und alles Unterschieds. Von dieser Sich-selbst-gleichheit oder in ihr selbst vielmehr fällt es wieder in jene Zufälligkeit und Verwirrung zurück, denn eben diese sich bewegende Negativität hat es nur mit Einzelnem zu tun, und treibt sich mit Zufälligem herum. Dies Bewußtsein ist also diese bewußtlose Faselei, von dem einen Extreme des sichselbstgleichen Selbstbewußtseins zum andern des zufälligen, verworrenen, und verwirrenden Bewußtseins hinüber und herüber zu gehen. Es selbst bringt diese beiden Gedanken seiner selbst nicht zusammen; es erkennt seine Freiheit einmal als Erhebung über alle Verwirrung und alle Zufälligkeit des Daseins, und bekennt sich ebenso das andre mal wieder als ein Zurückfallen in die Unwesentlichkeit und als ein Herumtreiben in ihr. Es läßt den unwesentlichen Inhalt in seinem Denken verschwinden, aber eben darin ist es das Bewußtsein eines Unwesentlichen; es spricht das absolute Verschwinden aus, aber das Aussprechen *ist*, und dies Bewußtsein ist das ausgesprochne Verschwinden; es spricht die Nichtigkeit des Sehens, Hörens, und so fort, aus, und es sieht, hört und so fort, selbst; es spricht die Nichtigkeit der sittlichen Wesenheiten aus, und macht sie selbst zu den Mächten seines Handelns. Sein Tun und seine Worte widersprechen sich immer, und ebenso hat es selbst das gedoppelte widersprechende Bewußtsein der Unwandelbarkeit und Gleichheit, und der völligen Zufälligkeit und Ungleichheit mit sich. Aber es hält diesen Widerspruch seiner selbst auseinander; und verhält sich darüber wie in seiner rein negativen Bewegung überhaupt. Wird ihm die Gleichheit aufgezeigt, so zeigt es die Ungleichheit auf; und indem ihm diese, die es eben ausgesprochen hat, itzt vorgehalten wird, so geht es zum Aufzeigen der Gleichheit über; sein Gerede ist in der Tat ein Gezänke eigensinniger Jungen, deren einer A sagt, wenn der andere B, und wieder B, wenn der andere A, und die sich durch den Widerspruch mit sich selbst die Freude erkaufen, miteinander im Widersprüche zu bleiben.

Im Skeptizismus erfährt das Bewußtsein in Wahrheit sich als ein in sich selbst widersprechendes Bewußtsein; es geht aus dieser Erfahrung eine neue Gestalt hervor, welche die zwei Gedanken zusammenbringt, die der Skeptizismus auseinander hält. Die Gedankenlosigkeit des Skeptizismus über sich selbst muß verschwinden, weil es in der Tat ein Bewußtsein ist, welches diese beiden Weisen an ihm hat. Diese neue Gestalt ist hierdurch ein solches, welches für sich das gedoppelte Bewußtsein seiner als des sich befreienden, unwandelbaren und sich selbst gleichen, und seiner als des absolut sich verwirrenden und verkehrenden—und das Bewußtsein dieses seines Widerspruchs ist. —Im Stoizismus ist das Selbstbewußtsein die einfache Freiheit seiner selbst; im Skeptizismus realisiert sie sich, vernichtet die andere Seite des bestimmten Daseins, aber verdoppelt sich vielmehr, und ist sich nun ein Zweifaches. Hiedurch ist die Verdopplung, welche früher an zwei einzelne, an den Herrn und den Knecht, sich verteilte, in eines eingekehrt; die Verdopplung des Selbstbewußtseins in sich selbst, welche im Begriffe des Geistes wesentlich ist, ist hiemit vorhanden, aber noch nicht ihre Einheit, und das unglückliche Bewußtsein ist das Bewußtsein seiner als des gedoppelten nur widersprechenden Wesens.

Dieses unglückliche, in sich entzweite Bewußtsein muß also, weil dieser Widerspruch seines Wesens sich ein Bewußtsein ist, in dem einen Bewußtsein immer auch das andere haben, und so aus jedem unmittelbar, indem es zum Siege und zur Ruhe der Einheit gekommen zu sein meint, wieder daraus ausgetrieben werden. Seine wahre Rückkehr aber in sich selbst, oder seine Versöhnung mit sich wird den Begriff des lebendig gewordenen und in die Existenz getretenen Geistes darstellen, weil an ihm schon dies ist, daß es als ein ungeteiltes Bewußtsein ein gedoppeltes ist; es selbstist das Schauen eines Selbstbewußtseins in ein anderes, und es selbst ist beide, und die Einheit beider ist ihm auch das Wesen, aber es für sich ist sich noch nicht dieses Wesen selbst, noch nicht die Einheit beider.

Indem es zunächst nur die unmittelbare Einheit beider ist, aber für es nicht beide dasselbe, sondern entgegengesetzte sind, so ist ihm das eine, nämlich das einfache unwandelbare, als das Wesen; das andere aber, das vielfache wandelbare, als das Unwesentliche. Beide sind für es einander fremde Wesen; es selbst, weil es das Bewußtsein dieses Widerspruchs ist, stellt sich auf die Seite des wandelbaren Bewußtseins, und ist sich das Unwesentliche; aber als Bewußtsein der Unwandelbarkeit, oder des einfachen Wesens, muß es zugleich darauf gehen, sich von dem Unwesentlichen, das heißt, sich von sich selbst zu befreien. Denn ob es für sich wohl nur das wandelbare, und das unwandelbare ihm ein Fremdes ist, so ist es selbst einfaches, und hiemit unwandelbares Bewußtsein, dessen hiemit als seines Wesens sich bewußt, jedoch so, daß es selbst für sich wieder nicht dies Wesen ist. Die Stellung, welche es beiden gibt, kann daher nicht eine Gleichgültigkeit derselben gegeneinander, d.i. nicht eine Gleichgültigkeit seiner selbst gegen das Unwandelbare sein; sondern es ist unmittelbar selbst beide, und es ist für es die Beziehung beider als eine Beziehung des Wesens auf das Unwesen, so daß dies letztere aufzuheben ist, aber indem ihm beide gleich wesentlich und widersprechend sind, ist es nur die widersprechende Bewegung, in welcher das Gegenteil nicht in seinem Gegenteil zur Ruhe kommt, sondern in ihm nur als Gegenteil sich neu erzeugt.

Es ist damit ein Kampf gegen einen Feind vorhanden, gegen welchen der Sieg vielmehr ein Unterliegen, das eine erreicht zu haben vielmehr der Verlust desselben in seinem Gegenteile ist. Das Bewußtsein des Lebens, seines Daseins und Tuns ist nur der Schmerz über dieses Dasein und Tun, denn es hat darin nur das Bewußtsein seines Gegenteils als des Wesens, und der eignen Nichtigkeit. Es geht in die Erhebung hieraus zum Unwandelbaren über. Aber diese Erhebung ist selbst dies Bewußtsein; sie ist also unmittelbar das Bewußtsein des Gegenteils, nämlich seiner selbst als der Einzelnheit. Das Unwandelbare, das in das Bewußtsein tritt, ist ebendadurch zugleich von der Einzelnheit berührt, und nur mit dieser gegenwärtig; statt diese im Bewußtsein des Unwandelbaren vertilgt zu haben, geht sie darin immer nur hervor.

In dieser Bewegung aber erfährt es eben dieses Hervortreten der Einzelnheit *am* Unwandelbaren, und des Unwandelbaren *an* der Einzelnheit. Es wird für es die Einzelnheit überhaupt amunwandelbaren Wesen, und zugleich die seinige an ihm. Denn die Wahrheit dieser Bewegung ist eben das Einssein dieses gedoppelten Bewußtseins. Diese Einheit wird ihm aber zunächst selbst eine solche, in welcher noch die Verschiedenheit beider das Herrschende ist. Es ist dadurch die dreifache Weise für dasselbe vorhanden, wie die Einzelnheit mit dem Unwandelbaren verknüpft ist; einmal geht es selbst sich wieder hervor als entgegengesetzt dem unwandelbaren Wesen; und es ist in den Anfang des Kampfs zurückgeworfen, welcher das Element des ganzen Verhältnisses bleibt. Das andremal aber hat das Unwandelbare selbst an ihm die Einzelnheit für es; so daß sie Gestalt des Unwandelbaren ist, an welches hiemit die ganze Weise der Existenz hinübertritt. Dasdrittemal findet es sich selbst als dieses Einzelne im Unwandelbaren. Das erste Unwandelbare ist ihm nur das fremde die Einzelnheit verurteilende Wesen; indem das andre eine Gestalt derEinzelnheit wie es selbst ist, so wird es drittens zum Geiste, hat sich selbst darin zu finden die Freude, und wird sich seine Einzelnheit mit dem Allgemeinen versöhnt zu sein bewußt.

Was sich hier als Weise und Verhältnis des Unwandelbaren darstellt, ergab sich als die Erfahrung, welche das entzweite Selbstbewußtsein in seinem Unglücke macht. Diese Erfahrung ist nun zwar nicht seine einseitige Bewegung, denn es ist selbst unwandelbares Bewußtsein, dieses hiemit zugleich auch einzelnes Bewußtsein, und die Bewegung ebensowohl Bewegung des unwandelbaren Bewußtseins, das in ihr so sehr wie das andere auftritt; denn sie verläuft sich durch diese Momente, einmal unwandelbares dem einzelnen überhaupt, dann selbst einzelnes dem andern einzelnen entgegengesetzt, und endlich mit ihm Eins zu sein. Aber diese Betrachtung, insofern sie uns angehört, ist hier unzeitig, denn bis itzt ist uns nur die Unwandelbarkeit als Unwandelbarkeit des Bewußtseins, welche deswegen nicht die wahre, sondern noch mit einem Gegensatze behaftete ist, nicht das Unwandelbare an und für sich selbst entstanden; wir wissen daher nicht, wie dieses sich verhalten wird. Was hier sich ergeben hat, ist nur dies, daß dem Bewußtsein, das hier unser Gegenstand ist, diese angezeigten Bestimmungen an dem Unwandelbaren erscheinen.

Aus diesem Grunde behält also auch das unwandelbare Bewußtsein in seiner Gestaltung selbst den Charakter und die Grundlage des Entzweit—und des Für-sich-seins gegen das einzelne Bewußtsein. Es ist hiemit für dieses überhaupt ein Geschehen, daß das Unwandelbare die Gestalt der Einzelnheit erhält; so wie es sich auch ihm entgegengesetzt nur findet, und also durch die Natur dies Verhältnis hat; daß es sich endlich in ihm findet, erscheint ihm zum Teil zwar durch es selbst hervorgebracht, oder darum stattzuhaben, weil es selbst einzeln ist; aber ein Teil dieser Einheit als dem Unwandelbaren zugehörend, sowohl nach ihrer Entstehung, als insofern sie ist; und der Gegensatz bleibt in dieser Einheit selbst. In der Tat ist durch die Gestaltung des Unwandelbaren das Moment des Jenseits nicht nur geblieben, sondern vielmehr noch befestigt; denn wenn es durch die Gestalt der einzelnen Wirklichkeit ihm einerseits zwar näher gebracht zu sein scheint, so ist es ihm andererseits nunmehr als ein undurchsichtiges sinnliches Eins, mit der ganzen Sprödigkeit eines Wirklichen, gegenüber; die Hoffnung, mit ihm Eins zu werden, muß Hoffnung, das heißt ohne Erfüllung und Gegenwart bleiben, denn zwischen ihr und der Erfüllung steht gerade die absolute Zufälligkeit oder unbewegliche Gleichgültigkeit, welche in der Gestaltung selbst, dem begründenden der Hoffnung, liegt. Durch die Natur des seienden Eins, durch die Wirklichkeit, die es angezogen, geschieht es notwendig, daß es in der Zeit verschwunden, und im Raume und ferne gewesen ist, und schlechthin ferne bleibt.

Wenn zuerst der bloße Begriff des entzweiten Bewußtseins sich so bestimmte, daß es auf das Aufheben seiner als einzelnen und auf das Werden zum unwandelbaren Bewußtsein gehe, so hat sein Streben nunmehr diese Bestimmung, daß es vielmehr sein Verhältnis zu dem reinen ungestalteten Unwandelbaren aufhebe, und sich nur die Beziehung auf den gestalteten Unwandelbaren gebe. Denn das Einssein des Einzelnen mit dem Unwandelbaren ist ihm nunmehr Wesen und Gegenstand, wie im Begriffe nur das gestaltlose, abstrakte Unwandelbare der wesentliche Gegenstand war; und das Verhältnis dieses absoluten Entzweitseins des Begriffes ist nun dasjenige, von welchem es sich wegzuwenden hat. Die zunächst äußere Beziehung aber zu dem gestalteten Unwandelbaren als einem fremden Wirklichen hat es zum absoluten Einswerden zu erheben.

Die Bewegung, worin das unwesentliche Bewußtsein dies Einssein zu erreichen strebt, ist selbst die dreifache, nach dem dreifachen Verhältnisse, welche es zu seinem gestalteten jenseits haben wird; einmal als reines Bewußtsein; das andremal als einzelnes Wesen, welches sich als Begierde und Arbeit gegen die Wirklichkeit verhält; und zum dritten als Bewußtsein seines Für-sich-seins.—Wie diese drei Weisen seines Seins in jenem allgemeinen Verhältnisse vorhanden und bestimmt sind, ist nun zu sehen.

Zuerst also es als reines Bewußtsein betrachtet, so scheint der gestaltete Unwandelbare, indem er für das reine Bewußtsein ist, gesetzt zu werden, wie er an und für sich selbst ist. Allein wie er an und für sich selbst ist, dies ist, wie schon erinnert, noch nicht entstanden. Daß er im Bewußtsein wäre, wie er an und für sich selbst ist, dies müßte wohl von ihm vielmehr ausgehen als von dem Bewußtsein; so aber ist diese seine Gegenwart hier nur erst einseitig durch das Bewußtsein vorhanden, und eben darum nicht vollkommen und wahrhaftig, sondern bleibt mit Unvollkommenheit oder einem Gegensatze beschwert.

Obgleich aber das unglückliche Bewußtsein also diese Gegenwart nicht besitzt, so ist es zugleich über das reine Denken, insofern dieses das abstrakte von der Einzelnheit überhaupt wegsehendeDenken des Stoizismus, und das nur unruhige Denken des Skeptizismus—in der Tat nur die Einzelnheit als der bewußtlose Widerspruch und dessen rastlose Bewegung—ist; es ist über diese beide hinaus, es bringt und hält das reine Denken und die Einzelnheit zusammen, ist aber noch nicht zu demjenigen Denken erhoben, für welches die Einzelnheit des Bewußtseins mit dem reinen Denken selbst ausgesöhnt ist. Es steht vielmehr in dieser Mitte, worin das abstrakte Denken die Einzelnheit des Bewußtseins als Einzelnheit berührt. Es selbst ist diese Berührung; es ist die Einheit des reinen Denkens und der Einzelnheit; es ist auch für es diese denkende Einzelnheit, oder das reine Denken, und das Unwandelbare wesentlich selbst als Einzelnheit. Aber es ist nichtfür es, daß dieser sein Gegenstand, das Unwandelbare, welches ihm wesentlich die Gestalt der Einzelnheit hat, es selbst ist, es selbst, das Einzelnheit des Bewußtseins ist.

Es verhält sich daher in dieser ersten Weise, worin wir es als reines Bewußtsein betrachten, zu seinem Gegenstande nicht denkend, sondern indem es selbst zwar an sich reine denkende Einzelnheit und sein Gegenstand eben dieses, aber nicht die Beziehung aufeinander selbst reines Denken ist, geht es, so zu sagen, nur an das Denken hin, und ist Andacht. Sein Denken als solches bleibt das gestaltlose Sausen des Glockengeläutes oder eine warme Nebelerfüllung, ein musikalisches Denken, das nicht zum Begriffe, der die einzige immanente gegenständliche Weise wäre, kommt. Es wird diesem unendlichen reinen innern Fühlen wohl sein Gegenstand; aber so eintretend, daß er nicht als begriffner, und darum als ein Fremdes eintritt. Es ist hiedurch die innerliche Bewegung des reinen Gemüts vorhanden, welches sich selbst, aber als die Entzweiung schmerzhaft fühlt; die Bewegung einer unendlichen Sehnsucht, welche die Gewißheit hat, daß ihr Wesen ein solches reines Gemüt ist, reines Denken, welches sich als Einzelnheit denkt; daß sie von diesem Gegenstande, eben darum, weil er sich als Einzelnheit denkt, erkannt, und anerkannt wird. Zugleich aber ist dies Wesen das unerreichbare Jenseits, welches im Ergreifen entflieht, oder vielmehr schon entflohen ist. Es ist schon entflohen; denn es ist einesteils das sich als Einzelnheit denkende Unwandelbare, und das Bewußtsein erreicht sich selbst daher unmittelbar in ihm, sich selbst, aber als das dem Unwandelbaren entgegengesetzte; statt das Wesen zu ergreifen, fühlt es nur, und ist in sich zurückgefallen; indem es im Erreichen sich als dies entgegengesetzte nicht abhalten kann, hat es, statt das Wesen ergriffen zu haben, nur die Unwesentlichkeit ergriffen. Wie es so auf einer Seite, indem es sich im Wesen zu erreichen strebt, nur die eigne getrennte Wirklichkeit ergreift, so kann es auf der andern Seite das Andere nicht als einzelnes, oder als wirklichesergreifen. Wo es gesucht werde, kann es nicht gefunden werden, denn es soll eben ein Jenseits, ein solches sein, welches nicht gefunden werden kann. Es als einzelnes gesucht, ist nicht eineallgemeine, gedachte Einzelnheit, nicht Begriff, sondern Einzelnes als Gegenstand, oder ein Wirkliches; Gegenstand der unmittelbaren sinnlichen Gewißheit; und ebendarum nur ein solches, welches verschwunden ist. Dem Bewußtsein kann daher nur das Grab seines Lebens zur Gegenwart kommen. Aber weil dies selbst eine Wirklichkeit und es gegen die Natur dieser ist, einen dauernden Besitz zu gewähren; so ist auch diese Gegenwart des Grabes nur der Kampf eines Bemühens, der verloren werden muß. Allein indem es diese Erfahrung gemacht, daß das Grab seines wirklichen unwandelbaren Wesens keine Wirklichkeit hat, daß die verschwundene Einzelnheit als verschwundne nicht die wahre Einzelnheit ist, wird es die unwandelbare Einzelnheit alswirkliche aufzusuchen oder als verschwundne festzuhalten aufgeben, und erst hiedurch ist es fähig, die Einzelnheit als wahrhafte oder als allgemeine zu finden.

Zunächst aber ist die Rückkehr des Gemüts in sich selbst so zu nehmen, daß es sich als Einzelnes Wirklichkeit hat. Es ist das reine Gemüt, welches für uns oder an sich, sich gefunden und in sich ersättigt ist, denn ob für es in seinem Gefühle sich wohl das Wesen von ihm trennt, so ist an sich dies Gefühl _Selbst_gefühl, es hat den Gegenstand seines reinen Fühlens gefühlt, und dieser ist es selbst; es tritt also hieraus als Selbstgefühl oder für sich seiendes Wirkliches auf. In dieser Rückkehr in sich ist für uns sein zweites Verhältnis geworden, das der Begierde und Arbeit, welche dem Bewußtsein die innerliche Gewißheit seiner selbst, die es für uns erlangt hat, durch Aufheben und Genießen des fremden Wesens, nämlich desselben in der Form der selbstständigen Dinge bewährt. Das unglückliche Bewußtsein aber findet sich nur als begehrend und arbeitend; es ist für es nicht vorhanden, daß, sich so zu finden, die innre Gewißheit seiner selbst zum Grunde liegt, und sein Gefühl des Wesens dies Selbstgefühl ist. Indem es sie für sich selbst nicht hat, bleibt sein Innres vielmehr noch die gebrochne Gewißheit seiner selbst; die Bewährung, welche es durch Arbeit und Genuß erhalten würde, ist darum eine ebensolche gebrochne; oder es muß sich vielmehr selbst diese Bewährung vernichten, so daß es in ihr wohl die Bewährung, aber nur die Bewährung desjenigen, was es für sich ist, nämlich seiner Entzweiung findet.

Die Wirklichkeit, gegen welche sich die Begierde und die Arbeit wendet, ist diesem Bewußtsein nicht mehr ein an sich Nichtiges, von ihm nur Aufzuhebendes und zu Verzehrendes, sondern ein solches, wie es selbst ist, eine entzweigebrochene Wirklichkeit, welche nur einerseits an sich nichtig, andererseits aber auch eine geheiligte Welt ist; sie ist Gestalt des Unwandelbaren, denn dieses hat die Einzelnheit an sich erhalten, und weil es als das Unwandelbare Allgemeines ist, hat seine Einzelnheit überhaupt die Bedeutung aller Wirklichkeit.

Wenn das Bewußtsein für sich selbstständiges Bewußtsein und ihm die Wirklichkeit an und für sich nichtig wäre, würde es in der Arbeit und in dem Genusse zum Gefühle seiner Selbstständigkeit gelangen, dadurch daß es selbst es wäre, welches die Wirklichkeit aufhöbe. Allein indem diese ihm Gestalt des Unwandelbaren ist, vermag es nicht sie durch sich aufzuheben. Sondern indem es zwar zur Vernichtung der Wirklichkeit und zum Genusse gelangt, so geschieht für es dies wesentlich dadurch, daß das Unwandelbare selbst seine Gestalt preisgibt, und ihm zum Genusse überläßt.—Das Bewußtsein tritt hierin seinerseits gleichfalls als Wirkliches auf, aber ebenso als innerlich gebrochen, und diese Entzweiung stellt sich in seinem Arbeiten und Genießen dar, in ein Verhältnis zur Wirklichkeit oder das Für-sich-sein und in ein An-sich-sein sich zu brechen. Jenes Verhältnis zur Wirklichkeit ist das Verändern oder das Tun, das Für-sich-sein, das dem einzelnen Bewußtsein als solchem angehört. Aber es ist darin auch an sich; diese Seite gehört dem unwandelbaren Jenseits an; sie sind die Fähigkeiten und Kräfte, eine fremde Gabe, welche das Unwandelbare ebenso dem Bewußtsein überläßt, um sie zu gebrauchen.

In seinem Tun ist demnach das Bewußtsein zunächst in dem Verhältnisse zweier Extreme; es steht als das tätige Diesseits auf einer Seite, und ihm gegenüber die passive Wirklichkeit, beide in Beziehung aufeinander, aber auch beide in das Unwandelbare zurückgegangen, und an sich festhaltend. Von beiden Seiten löst sich daher nur eine Oberfläche gegeneinander ab, welche in das Spiel der Bewegung gegen die andre tritt.—Das Extrem der Wirklichkeit wird durch das tätige Extrem aufgehoben; sie von ihrer Seite kann aber nur darum aufgehoben werden, weil ihr unwandelbares Wesen sie selbst aufhebt, sich von sich abstößt, und das Abgestoßene der Tätigkeit preisgibt. Die tätige Kraft erscheint als die Macht, worin die Wirklichkeit sich auflöst; darum aber ist für dieses Bewußtsein, welchem das An-sich oder das Wesen ein ihm Andres ist, diese Macht, als welche es in der Tätigkeit auftritt, das Jenseits seiner selbst. Statt also aus seinem Tun in sich zurückzukehren, und sich für sich selbst bewährt zu haben, reflektiert es vielmehr diese Bewegung des Tuns in das andre Extrem zurück, welches hiedurch als rein Allgemeines, als die absolute Macht dargestellt ist, von der die Bewegung nach allen Seiten ausgegangen, und die das Wesen sowohl der sich zersetzenden Extreme, wie sie zuerst auftraten, als des Wechsels selbst sei.

Daß das unwandelbare Bewußtsein auf seine Gestalt Ver_zicht tut_ und sie preisgibt, dagegen das einzelne Bewußtsein dankt, d.h. die Befriedigung des Bewußtseins seiner Selbstständigkeit sichversagt, und das Wesen des Tuns von sich ab dem Jenseits zuweist, durch diese beide Momente des gegenseitigen Sich-aufgebens beider Teile entsteht hiemit allerdings dem Bewußtsein seineEinheit mit dem Unwandelbaren. Allein zugleich ist diese Einheit mit der Trennung affiziert, in sich wieder gebrochen, und es tritt aus ihr der Gegensatz des Allgemeinen und Einzelnen wieder hervor. Denn das Bewußtsein entsagt zwar zum Scheine der Befriedigung seines Selbstgefühls; erlangt aber die wirkliche Befriedigung desselben; denn es ist Begierde, Arbeit und Genuß gewesen; es hat als Bewußtsein gewollt, getan und genossen. Sein Danken ebenso, worin es das andre Extrem als das Wesen anerkennt, und sich aufhebt, ist selbst sein eignes Tun, welches das Tun des andern Extrems aufwiegt, und der sich preisgebenden Wohltat ein gleiches Tun entgegenstellt; wenn jenes ihm seine Oberfläche überläßt, so dankt es aber auch, und tut darin, indem es sein Tun, d.h. sein Wesen, selbst aufgibt, eigentlich mehr als das andere, das nur eine Oberfläche von sich abstößt. Die ganze Bewegung reflektiert sich also nicht nur im wirklichen Begehren, Arbeiten und Genießen, sondern sogar selbst im Danken, worin das Gegenteil zu geschehen scheint, in das Extrem der Einzelnheit. Das Bewußtsein fühlt sich darin als dieses einzelne, und läßt sich durch den Schein seines Verzichtleistens nicht täuschen, denn die Wahrheit desselben ist, daß es sich nicht aufgegeben hat; was zustande gekommen, ist nur die gedoppelte Reflexion in die beiden Extreme, und das Resultat die wiederholte Spaltung in das entgegengesetzte Bewußtsein des Unwandelbaren und in das Bewußtsein des gegenüberstehenden Wollens, Vollbringens, Genießens, und des Auf-sich-Verzicht-leistens selbst, oder der fürsichseienden Einzelnheit überhaupt.

Es ist damit das dritte Verhältnis der Bewegung dieses Bewußtseins eingetreten, welches aus dem zweiten als ein solches hervortritt, das in Wahrheit durch sein Wollen und Vollbringen sich als selbstständiges erprobt hat. Im ersten Verhältnisse war es nur Begriff des wirklichen Bewußtseins, oder das innre Gemüt, welches im Tun und Genusse noch nicht wirklich ist; das zweite ist diese Verwirklichung, als äußeres Tun und Genießen; hieraus aber zurückgekehrt ist es ein solches, welches sich als wirkliches und wirkendes Bewußtsein erfahren, oder dem es wahr ist, an und für sich zu sein. Darin ist aber nun der Feind in seiner eigensten Gestalt aufgefunden. Im Kampfe des Gemüts ist das einzelne Bewußtsein nur als musikalisches, abstraktes Moment; in der Arbeit und dem Genusse, als der Realisierung dieses wesenlosen Seins, kann es unmittelbar sich vergessen, und die bewußte Eigenheit in dieser Wirklichkeit wird durch das dankende Anerkennen niedergeschlagen. Dieses Niederschlagen ist aber in Wahrheit eine Rückkehr des Bewußtseins in sich selbst, und zwar in sich als die ihm wahrhafte Wirklichkeit.

Dies dritte Verhältnis, worin diese wahrhafte Wirklichkeit das eine Extrem ist, ist die Beziehung derselben auf das allgemeine Wesen, als der Nichtigkeit; und die Bewegung dieser Beziehung ist noch zu betrachten.

Was zuerst die entgegengesetzte Beziehung des Bewußtseins betrifft, worin ihm seine Realität unmittelbar das Nichtige ist, so wird also sein wirkliches Tun zu einem Tun von nichts, sein Genuß Gefühl seines Unglücks. Hiemit verlieren Tun und Genuß allen allgemeinen Inhalt und Bedeutung, denn dadurch hätten sie ein An- und Für-sich-sein, und beide ziehen sich in die Einzelnheit zurück, auf welche das Bewußtsein, sie aufzuheben, gerichtet ist. Seiner als dieses wirklichen Einzelnen ist das Bewußtsein sich in den tierischen Funktionen bewußt. Diese, statt unbefangen, als etwas, das an und für sich nichtig ist, und keine Wichtigkeit und Wesenheit für den Geist erlangen kann, getan zu werden, da sie es sind, in welchen sich der Feind in seiner eigentümlichen Gestalt zeigt, sind sie vielmehr Gegenstand des ernstlichen Bemühens, und werden gerade zum Wichtigsten. Indem aber dieser Feind in seiner Niederlage sich erzeugt, das Bewußtsein, da es sich ihn fixiert, vielmehr statt frei davon zu werden, immer dabei verweilt, und sich immer verunreinigt erblickt, zugleich dieser Inhalt seines Bestrebens, statt eines Wesentlichen das Niedrigste, statt eines Allgemeinen das Einzelnste ist, so sehen wir nur eine auf sich und ihr kleines Tun beschränkte, und sich bebrütende, ebenso unglückliche als ärmliche Persönlichkeit.

Aber an beides, das Gefühl seines Unglücks und die Ärmlichkeit seines Tuns, knüpft sich ebenso das Bewußtsein seiner Einheit mit dem Unwandelbaren. Denn die versuchte unmittelbare Vernichtung seines wirklichen Seins ist vermittelt durch den Gedanken des Unwandelbaren, und geschieht in dieser Beziehung. Die mittelbare Beziehung macht das Wesen der negativen Bewegung aus, in welcher es sich gegen seine Einzelnheit richtet, welche aber ebenso als Beziehung an sich positiv ist, und für es selbst diese seine Einheit hervorbringen wird.

Diese mittelbare Beziehung ist hiemit ein Schluß, in welchem die sich zuerst als gegen das An-sich entgegengesetzt fixierende Einzelnheit mit diesem andern Extreme nur durch ein drittes zusammengeschlossen ist. Durch diese Mitte ist das Extrem des unwandelbaren Bewußtseins für das unwesentliche Bewußtsein, in welchem zugleich auch dies ist, daß es ebenso für jenes nur durch diese Mitte sei, und diese Mitte hiemit eine solche, die beide Extreme einander vorstellt, und der gegenseitige Diener eines jeden bei dem andern ist. Diese Mitte ist selbst ein bewußtes Wesen, denn sie ist ein das Bewußtsein als solches vermittelndes Tun; der Inhalt dieses Tuns ist die Vertilgung, welche das Bewußtsein mit seiner Einzelnheit vornimmt.

In ihr also befreit dieses sich von dem Tun und Genusse als dem seinen; es stößt von sich als _fürsich_seiendem Extreme das Wesen seines Willens ab, und wirft auf die Mitte oder den Diener die Eigenheit und Freiheit des Entschlusses, und damit die Schuld seines Tuns. Dieser Vermittler, als mit dem unwandelbaren Wesen in unmittelbarer Beziehung, dient mit seinem Rate über das Rechte. Die Handlung, indem sie Befolgung eines fremden Beschlusses ist, hört nach der Seite des Tuns oder des Willens auf, die eigne zu sein. Es bleibt aber noch ihre gegenständliche Seite dem unwesentlichen Bewußtsein, nämlich die Frucht seiner Arbeit und der Genuß. Diesen stößt es also ebenso von sich ab, und leistet wie auf seinen Willen, so auf seine in der Arbeit und Genusse erhaltene Wirklichkeit Verzicht; auf sie, teils als auf die erreichte Wahrheit seiner selbstbewußten Selbstständigkeit—indem es etwas ganz Fremdes, ihm Sinnloses vorstellend und sprechend sich bewegt; teils auf sie als äußerliches Eigentum—indem es von dem Besitze, den es durch die Arbeit erworben, etwas abläßt; teils auf den gehabten Genuß—indem es ihn im Fasten und Kasteien auch wieder ganz sich versagt.

Durch diese Momente des Aufgebens des eignen Entschlusses, dann des Eigentumes und Genusses, und endlich das positive Moment des Treibens eines unverstandenen Geschäftes nimmt es sich in Wahrheit und vollständig das Bewußtsein der innern und äußern Freiheit, der Wirklichkeit als seines Für-sich-seins; es hat die Gewißheit, in Wahrheit seines Ich sich entäußert, und sein unmittelbares Selbstbewußtsein zu einem Dinge, zu einem gegenständlichen Sein gemacht zu haben.—Die Verzichtleistung auf sich konnte es allein durch diese wirkliche Aufopferung bewähren; denn nur in ihr verschwindet der Betrug, welcher in dem innern Anerkennen des Dankens durch Herz, Gesinnung und Mund liegt, einem Anerkennen, welches zwar alle Macht des Für-sich-seins von sich abwälzt, und sie einem Geben von oben zuschreibt, aber in diesem Abwälzen selbst sich die äußere Eigenheit in dem Besitze, den es nicht aufgibt, die innre aber in dem Bewußtsein des Entschlusses, den es selbst gefaßt, und in dem Bewußtsein seines durch es bestimmten Inhalts, den es nicht gegen einen fremden, es sinnlos erfüllenden umgetauscht hat, behält.

Aber in der wirklich vollbrachten Aufopferung hat an sich, wie das Bewußtsein das Tun als das seinige aufgehoben, auch sein Unglück von ihm abgelassen. Daß dies Ablassen an sich geschehen ist, ist jedoch ein Tun des andern Extrems des Schlusses, welches das ansichseiende Wesen ist. Jene Aufopferung des unwesentlichen Extrems war aber zugleich nicht ein einseitiges Tun, sondern enthielt das Tun des Andern in sich. Denn das Aufgeben des eignen Willens ist nur einerseits negativ, seinem Begriffe nach oder an sich, zugleich aber positiv, nämlich das Setzen des Willens als eines Andern, und bestimmt des Willens als eines nicht einzelnen, sondern allgemeinen. Für dies Bewußtsein ist diese positive Bedeutung des negativ gesetzten einzelnen Willens der Willen des andern Extrems, der ihm, weil er eben ein Anderes für es ist, nicht durch sich, sondern durch das Dritte, den Vermittler als Rat, wird. Es wird daher für es sein Willen wohl zum allgemeinen und an sich seienden Willen, aber es selbst ist sich nicht dies An-sich; das Aufgeben des seinigen als einzelnen ist ihm nicht dem Begriffe nach das Positive des allgemeinen Willens. Ebenso sein Aufgeben des Besitzes und Genusses hat nur dieselbe negative Bedeutung, und das Allgemeine, das für es dadurch wird, ist ihm nicht sein eignes Tun. Diese Einheit des gegenständlichen und des Für-sich-seins, welche im Begriffe des Tuns ist, und welche darum dem Bewußtsein als das Wesen und Gegenstand wird—wie sie ihm nicht der Begriff seines Tuns ist, so ist ihm auch dies nicht, daß sie als Gegenstand für es wird, unmittelbar und durch es selbst, sondern es läßt sich dem vermittelnden Diener diese selbst noch gebrochne Gewißheit aussprechen, daß nur an sich sein Unglück das verkehrte, nämlich sich in seinem Tun selbstbefriedigendes Tun, oder seliger Genuß; sein ärmliches Tun ebenso an sich das verkehrte, nämlich absolutes Tun, dem Begriffe nach das Tun nur als Tun des Einzelnen überhaupt Tun ist. Aber für es selbst bleibt das Tun und sein wirkliches Tun ein ärmliches, und sein Genuß der Schmerz, und das Aufgehobensein derselben in der positiven Bedeutung ein Jenseits. Aber in diesem Gegenstande, worin ihm sein Tun und Sein als dieses einzelnen Bewußtseins, Sein und Tun an sich ist, ist ihm die Vorstellung der Vernunft geworden, der Gewißheit des Bewußtseins, in seiner Einzelnheit absolut an sich, oder alle Realität zu sein.

A: Independence and Dependence of Self-Consciousness: Lordship and Bondage

SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS exists in itself and for itself, in that, and by the fact that it exists for another self-consciousness; that is to say, it is only by being acknowledged or “recognized”. The conception of this its unity in its duplication, of infinitude realizing itself in self-consciousness, has many sides to it and encloses within it elements of varied significance. Thus its moments must on the one hand be strictly kept apart in detailed distinctiveness, and, on the other, in this distinction must, at the same time, also be taken as not distinguished, or must always be accepted and understood in their opposite sense. This double meaning of what is distinguished lies in the nature of self-consciousness: — of its being infinite, or directly the opposite of the determinateness in which it is fixed. The detailed exposition of the notion of this spiritual unity in its duplication will bring before us the process of Recognition.

1. Duplicated Self-Consciousness

Self-consciousness has before it another self-consciousness; it has come outside itself. This has a double significance. First it has lost its own self, since it finds itself as an other being; secondly, it has thereby sublated that other, for it does not regard the other as essentially real, but sees its own self in the other.

It must cancel this its other. To do so is the sublation of that first double meaning, and is therefore a second double meaning. First, it must set itself to sublate the other independent being, in order thereby to become certain of itself as true being, secondly, it thereupon proceeds to sublate its own self, for this other is itself.

This sublation in a double sense of its otherness in a double sense is at the same time a return in a double sense into its self. For, firstly, through sublation, it gets back itself, because it becomes one with itself again through the cancelling of its otherness; but secondly, it likewise gives otherness back again to the other self-consciousness, for it was aware of being in the other, it cancels this its own being in the other and thus lets the other again go free.

This process of self-consciousness in relation to another self-consciousness has in this manner been represented as the action of one alone. But this action on the part of the one has itself the double significance of being at once its own action and the action of that other as well. For the other is likewise independent, shut up within itself, and there is nothing in it which is not there through itself. The first does not have the object before it only in the passive form characteristic primarily of the object of desire, but as an object existing independently for itself, over which therefore it has no power to do anything for its own behalf, if that object does not per se do what the first does to it. The process then is absolutely the double process of both self-consciousnesses. Each sees the other do the same as itself; each itself does what it demands on the part of the other, and for that reason does what it does, only so far as the other does the same. Action from one side only would be useless, because what is to happen can only be brought about by means of both.

The action has then a double entente not only in the sense that it is an act done to itself as well as to the other, but also in the sense that the act simpliciter is the act of the one as well as of the other regardless of their distinction.

In this movement we see the process repeated which came before us as the play of forces; in the present case, however, it is found in consciousness. What in the former had effect only for us [contemplating experience], holds here for the terms themselves. The middle term is self-consciousness which breaks itself up into the extremes; and each extreme is this interchange of its own determinateness, and complete transition into the opposite. While qua consciousness, it no doubt comes outside itself, still, in being outside itself, it is at the same time restrained within itself, it exists for itself, and its self-externalization is for consciousness. Consciousness finds that it immediately is and is not another consciousness, as also that this other is for itself only when it cancels itself as existing for itself , and has self-existence only in the self-existence of the other. Each is the mediating term to the other, through which each mediates and unites itself with itself; and each is to itself and to the other an immediate self-existing reality, which, at the same time, exists thus for itself only through this mediation. They recognize themselves as mutually recognizing one another.

2. The Conflict of Self-Consciousness in Self-opposition

This pure conception of recognition, of duplication of self-consciousness within its unity, we must now consider in the way its process appears for self-consciousness. It will, in the first place, present the aspect of the disparity of the two, or the break-up of the middle term into the extremes, which, qua extremes, are opposed to one another, and of which one is merely recognized, while the other only recognizes.

Self-consciousness is primarily simple existence for self, self-identity by exclusion of every other from itself. It takes its essential nature and absolute object to be Ego; and in this immediacy, in this bare fact of its self-existence, it is individual. That which for it is other stands as unessential object, as object with the impress and character of negation. But the other is also a self-consciousness; an individual makes its appearance in antithesis to an individual. Appearing thus in their immediacy, they are for each other in the manner of ordinary objects. They are independent individual forms, modes of Consciousness that have not risen above the bare level of life (for the existent object here has been determined as life). They are, moreover, forms of consciousness which have not yet accomplished for one another the process of absolute abstraction, of uprooting all immediate existence, and of being merely the bare, negative fact of self-identical consciousness; or, in other words, have not yet revealed themselves to each other as existing purely for themselves, i.e., as self-consciousness. Each is indeed certain of its own self, but not of the other, and hence its own certainty of itself is still without truth. For its truth would be merely that its own individual existence for itself would be shown to it to be an independent object, or, which is the same thing, that the object would be exhibited as this pure certainty of itself. By the notion of recognition, however, this is not possible, except in the form that as the other is for it, so it is for the other; each in its self through its own action and again through the action of the other achieves this pure abstraction of existence for self.

The presentation of itself, however, as pure abstraction of self-consciousness consists in showing itself as a pure negation of its objective form, or in showing that it is fettered to no determinate existence, that it is not bound at all by the particularity everywhere characteristic of existence as such, and is not tied up with life. The process of bringing all this out involves a twofold action — action on the part of the other and action on the part of itself. In so far as it is the other’s action, each aims at the destruction and death of the other. But in this there is implicated also the second kind of action, self-activity; for the former implies that it risks its own life. The relation of both self-consciousnesses is in this way so constituted that they prove themselves and each other through a life-and-death struggle. They must enter into this struggle, for they must bring their certainty of themselves, the certainty of being for themselves, to the level of objective truth, and make this a fact both in the case of the other and in their own case as well. And it is solely by risking life that freedom is obtained; only thus is it tried and proved that the essential nature of self-consciousness is not bare existence, is not the merely immediate form in which it at first makes its appearance, is not its mere absorption in the expanse of life. Rather it is thereby guaranteed that there is nothing present but what might be taken as a vanishing moment — that self-consciousness is merely pure self-existence, being-for-self. The individual, who has not staked his life, may, no doubt, be recognized as a Person; but he has not attained the truth of this recognition as an independent self-consciousness. In the same way each must aim at the death of the other, as it risks its own life thereby; for that other is to it of no more worth than itself; the other’s reality is presented to the former as an external other, as outside itself; it must cancel that externality. The other is a purely existent consciousness and entangled in manifold ways; it must view its otherness as pure existence for itself or as absolute negation.

This trial by death, however, cancels both the truth which was to result from it, and therewith the certainty of self altogether. For just as life is the natural “position” of consciousness, independence without absolute negativity, so death is the natural “negation” of consciousness, negation without independence, which thus remains without the requisite significance of actual recognition. Through death, doubtless, there has arisen the certainty that both did stake their life, and held it lightly both in their own case and in the case of the other; but that is not for those who underwent this struggle. They cancel their consciousness which had its place in this alien element of natural existence; in other words, they cancel themselves and are sublated as terms or extremes seeking to have existence on their own account. But along with this there vanishes from the play of change the essential moment, viz. that of breaking up into extremes with opposite characteristics; and the middle term collapses into a lifeless unity which is broken up into lifeless extremes, merely existent and not opposed. And the two do not mutually give and receive one another back from each other through consciousness; they let one another go quite indifferently, like things. Their act is abstract negation, not the negation characteristic of consciousness, which cancels in such a way that it preserves and maintains what is sublated, and thereby survives its being sublated.

3. Lord and Bondsman

In this experience self-consciousness becomes aware that life is as essential to it as pure self-consciousness. In immediate self-consciousness the simple ego is absolute object, which, however, is for us or in itself absolute mediation, and has as its essential moment substantial and solid independence. The dissolution of that simple unity is the result of the first experience; through this there is posited a pure self-consciousness, and a consciousness which is not purely for itself, but for another, i.e. as an existent consciousness, consciousness in the form and shape of thinghood. Both moments are essential, since, in the first instance, they are unlike and opposed, and their reflexion into unity has not yet come to light, they stand as two opposed forms or modes of consciousness. The one is independent, and its essential nature is to be for itself; the other is dependent, and its essence is life or existence for another. The former is the Master, or Lord, the latter the Bondsman.

The master is the consciousness that exists for itself; but no longer merely the general notion of existence for self. Rather, it is a consciousness existing on its own account which is mediated with itself through an other consciousness, i.e. through an other whose very nature implies that it is bound up with an independent being or with thinghood in general. The master brings himself into relation to both these moments, to a thing as such, the object of desire, and to the consciousness whose essential character is thinghood. And since the master, is (a) qua notion of self-consciousness, an immediate relation of self-existence, but (b) is now moreover at the same time mediation, or a being-for-self which is for itself only through an other — he [the master] stands in relation (a) immediately to both, (b) mediately to each through the other. The master relates himself to the bondsman mediately through independent existence, for that is precisely what keeps the bondsman in thrall; it is his chain, from which he could not in the struggle get away, and for that reason he proved himself to be dependent, to have his independence in the shape of thinghood. The master, however, is the power controlling this state of existence, for he has shown in the struggle that he holds it to be merely something negative. Since he is the power dominating existence, while this existence again is the power controlling the other [the bondsman], the master holds, par consequence, this other in subordination. In the same way the master relates himself to the thing mediately through the bondsman. The bondsman being a self-consciousness in the broad sense, also takes up a negative attitude to things and cancels them; but the thing is, at the same time, independent for him and, in consequence, he cannot, with all his negating, get so far as to annihilate it outright and be done with it; that is to say, he merely works on it. To the master, on the other hand, by means of this mediating process, belongs the immediate relation, in the sense of the pure negation of it, in other words he gets the enjoyment. What mere desire did not attain, he now succeeds in attaining, viz. to have done with the thing, and find satisfaction in enjoyment. Desire alone did not get the length of this, because of the independence of the thing. The master, however, who has interposed the bondsman between it and himself, thereby relates himself merely to the dependence of the thing, and enjoys it without qualification and without reserve. The aspect of its independence he leaves to the bondsman, who labours upon it.

(a). Lordship

In these two moments, the master gets his recognition through an other consciousness, for in them the latter affirms itself as unessential, both by working upon the thing, and, on the other hand, by the fact of being dependent on a determinate existence; in neither case can this other get the mastery over existence, and succeed in absolutely negating it. We have thus here this moment of recognition, viz. that the other consciousness cancels itself as self-existent, and, ipso facto, itself does what the first does to it. In the same way we have the other moment, that this action on the part of the second is the action proper of the first; for what is done by the bondsman is properly an action on the part of the master. The latter exists only for himself, that is his essential nature; he is the negative power without qualification, a power to which the thing is naught. And he is thus the absolutely essential act in this situation, while the bondsman is not so, he is an unessential activity. But for recognition proper there is needed the moment that what the master does to the other he should also do to himself, and what the bondsman does to himself, he should do to the other also. On that account a form of recognition has arisen that is one-sided and unequal.

In all this, the unessential consciousness is, for the master, the object which embodies the truth of his certainty of himself. But it is evident that this object does not correspond to its notion; for, just where the master has effectively achieved lordship, he really finds that something has come about quite different from an independent consciousness. It is not an independent, but rather a dependent consciousness that he has achieved. He is thus not assured of self-existence as his truth; he finds that his truth is rather the unessential consciousness, and the fortuitous unessential action of that consciousness.

The truth of the independent consciousness is accordingly the consciousness of the bondsman. This doubtless appears in the first instance outside itself, and not as the truth of self-consciousness. But just as lordship showed its essential nature to be the reverse of what it wants to be, so, too, bondage will, when completed, pass into the opposite of what it immediately is: being a consciousness repressed within itself, it will enter into itself, and change round into real and true independence.

(b). Fear

We have seen what bondage is only in relation to lordship. But it is a self-consciousness, and we have now to consider what it is, in this regard, in and for itself. In the first instance, the master is taken to be the essential reality for the state of bondage; hence, for it, the truth is the independent consciousness existing for itself, although this truth is not taken yet as inherent in bondage itself. Still, it does in fact contain within itself this truth of pure negativity and self-existence, because it has experienced this reality within it. For this consciousness was not in peril and fear for this element or that, nor for this or that moment of time, it was afraid for its entire being; it felt the fear of death, the sovereign master. It has been in that experience melted to its inmost soul, has trembled throughout its every fibre, and all that was fixed and steadfast has quaked within it. This complete perturbation of its entire substance, this absolute dissolution of all its stability into fluent continuity, is, however, the simple, ultimate nature of self-consciousness, absolute negativity, pure self-referrent existence, which consequently is involved in this type of consciousness. This moment of pure self-existence is moreover a fact for it; for in the master it finds this as its object. Further, this bondsman’s consciousness is not only this total dissolution in a general way; in serving and toiling the bondsman actually carries this out. By serving he cancels in every particular aspect his dependence on and attachment to natural existence, and by his work removes this existence away.

The feeling of absolute power, however, realized both in general and in the particular form of service, is only dissolution implicitly; and albeit the fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom, consciousness is not therein aware of being self-existent. Through work and labour, however, this consciousness of the bondsman comes to itself. In the moment which corresponds to desire in the case of the master’s consciousness, the aspect of the non-essential relation to the thing seemed to fall to the lot of the servant, since the thing there retained its independence. Desire has reserved to itself the pure negating of the object and thereby unalloyed feeling of self. This satisfaction, however, just for that reason is itself only a state of evanescence, for it lacks objectivity or subsistence. Labour, on the other hand, is desire restrained and checked, evanescence delayed and postponed; in other words, labour shapes and fashions the thing. The negative relation to the object passes into the form of the object, into something that is permanent and remains; because it is just for the labourer that the object has independence. This negative mediating agency, this activity giving shape and form, is at the same time the individual existence, the pure self-existence of that consciousness, which now in the work it does is externalized and passes into the condition of permanence. The consciousness that toils and serves accordingly attains by this means the direct apprehension of that independent being as its self.

But again, shaping or forming the object has not only the positive significance that the bondsman becomes thereby aware of himself as factually and objectively self-existent; this type of consciousness has also a negative import, in contrast with its moment, the element of fear. For in shaping the thing it only becomes aware of its own proper negativity, existence on its own account, as an object, through the fact that it cancels the actual form confronting it. But this objective negative element is precisely alien, external reality, before which it trembled. Now, however, it destroys this extraneous alien negative, affirms and sets itself up as a negative in the element of permanence, and thereby becomes for itself a self-existent being. In the master, the bondsman feels self-existence to be something external, an objective fact; in fear self-existence is present within himself; in fashioning the thing, self-existence comes to be felt explicitly as his own proper being, and he attains the consciousness that he himself exists in its own right and on its own account (an und für sich). By the fact that the form is objectified, it does not become something other than the consciousness moulding the thing through work; for just that form is his pure self existence, which therein becomes truly realized. Thus precisely in labour where there seemed to be merely some outsider’s mind and ideas involved, the bondsman becomes aware, through this re-discovery of himself by himself, of having and being a “mind of his own”.

(c). The Formative Process of Self-Enfranchisement

For this reflection of self into self the two moments, fear and service in general, as also that of formative activity, are necessary: and at the same time both must exist in a universal manner. Without the discipline of service and obedience, fear remains formal and does not spread over the whole known reality of existence. Without the formative activity shaping the thing, fear remains inward and mute, and consciousness does not become objective for itself. Should consciousness shape and form the thing without the initial state of absolute fear, then it has a merely vain and futile “mind of its own”; for its form or negativity is not negativity per se, and hence its formative activity cannot furnish the consciousness of itself as essentially real. If it has endured not absolute fear, but merely some slight anxiety, the negative reality has remained external to it, its substance has not been through and through infected thereby. Since the entire content of its natural consciousness has not tottered and shaken, it is still inherently a determinate mode of being; having a “mind of its own” (der eigene Sinn) is simply stubbornness (Eigensinn), a type of freedom which does not get beyond the attitude of bondage. As little as the pure form can become its essential nature, so little is that form, considered as extending over particulars, a universal formative activity, an absolute notion; it is rather a piece of cleverness which has mastery within a certain range, but not over the universal power nor over the entire objective reality.

The Unhappy Consciousness

Free Self-Consciousness

Independent self-consciousness partly finds its essential reality in the bare abstraction of Ego. On the other hand, when this abstract ego develops further and forms distinctions of its own, this differentiation does not become an objective inherently real content for that self-consciousness. Hence this self consciousness does not become an ego which truly differentiates itself in its abstract simplicity, or one which remains identical with itself in this absolute differentiation. The repressed and subordinate type of consciousness, on the other hand, becomes, in the formative activity of work, an object to itself, in the sense that the form, given to the thing when shaped and moulded, is his object; he sees in the master, at the same time, self-existence as a real mode of consciousness. But the subservient consciousness as such finds these two moments fall apart — the moment of itself as an independent object, and the moment of this object as a mode of consciousness, and so its own proper reality. Since, however, the form and the self-existence are for us, or objectively in themselves, one and the same, and since in the notion of independent consciousness the inherent reality is consciousness, the phase of inherent existence (Ansichsein) or thinghood, which received its shape and form through labour, is no other substance than consciousness. In this way we have a new attitude or mode of consciousness brought about: a type of consciousness which takes on the form of infinitude, or one whose essence consists in unimpeded movement of consciousness. It is one which thinks or is free self-consciousness. For thinking does not mean being an abstract ego, but an ego which has at the same time the significance of inherently existing in itself; it means being object to itself or relating itself to objective reality in such a way that this connotes the self-existence of that consciousness for which it is an object. The object does not for thinking proceed by way of presentations or figures, but of notions, conceptions, i.e. of a differentiated reality or essence, which, being an immediate content of consciousness, is nothing distinct from it. What is presented, shaped and constructed, and existent as such, has the form of being something other than consciousness. A notion, however, is at the same time an existent, and this distinction, so far as it falls in consciousness itself, is its determinate content. But in that this content is, at the same time, a conceptually constituted, a comprehended (begriffener) content, consciousness remains immediately aware within itself of its unity with this determinate existent so distinguished; not as in the case of a presentation, where consciousness from the first has to take special note that this is its idea; on the contrary, the notion is for me eo ipso and at once my notion. In thinking I am free, because I am not in an other, but remain simply and solely in touch with myself; and the object which for me is my essential reality, is in undivided unity my self -existence; and my procedure in dealing with notions is a process within myself.

It is essential, however, in this determination of the above attitude of self-consciousness to keep hold of the fact that this attitude is thinking consciousness in general, that its object is immediate unity of the self's implicit, inherent existence, and of its existence explicitly for self. The self-same consciousness which repels itself from itself, becomes aware of being an element existing in itself. But to itself it is this element to begin with only as universal reality in general, and not as this essential reality appears when developed in all the manifold details it contains, when the process of its being brings out all its fullness of content.

Stoicism

This freedom of self-consciousness, as is well known, has been called Stoicism, in so far as it has appeared as a phenomenon conscious of itself in the course of the history of man's spirit. Its principle is that consciousness is essentially that which thinks, is a thinking reality, and that anything is really essential for consciousness, or is true and good, only when consciousness in dealing with it adopts the attitude of a thinking being.

The manifold, self-differentiating expanse of life, with all its individualization and complication, is the object upon which desire and labour operate. This varied activity has now contracted itself into the simple distinction which is found in the pure process of thought. What has still essential reality is not a distinction in the sense of a determinate thing, or in the shape of a consciousness of a determinate kind of natural existence, in the shape of a feeling, or again in the form of desire and its specific purpose, whether that purpose be set up by the consciousness desiring or by an extraneous consciousness. What has still essential significance here is solely that distinction which is a thought-constituted distinction, or which, when made, is not distinguished from me. This consciousness in consequence takes a negative attitude towards the relation of lordship and bondage. Its action, in the case of the master, results in his not simply having his truth in and through the bondsman; and, in that of the bondsman, in not finding his truth in the will of his master and in service. The essence of this consciousness is to be free, on the throne as well as in fetters, throughout all the dependence that attaches to its individual existence, and to maintain that stolid lifeless unconcern which persistently withdraws from the movement of existence, from effective activity as well as from passive endurance, into the simple essentiality of thought. Stubbornness is that freedom which makes itself secure in a solid singleness, and keeps within the sphere of bondage. Stoicism, on the other hand, is the freedom which ever comes directly out of that spheres and returns back into the pure universality of thought. It is a freedom which can come on the scene as a general form of the world's spirit only in a time of universal fear and bondage, a time, too, when mental cultivation is universal, and has elevated culture to the level of thought.

Now while this self-consciousness finds its essential reality to be neither something other than itself, nor the pure abstraction of ego, but ego which has within it otherness-otherness in the sense of a thought-constituted distinction-so that this ego in its otherness is turned back directly into itself; yet this essential nature is, at the same time, only an abstract reality. The freedom of self-consciousness is indifferent towards natural existence, and has, therefore, let this latter go and remain free. The reflexion is thus duplicated. Freedom of thought takes only pure thought as its truth, and this lacks the concrete filling of life. It is, therefore, merely the notion of freedom, not living freedom itself; for it is, to begin with, only thinking in general that is its essence, the form as such, which has turned away from the independence of things and gone back into itself. Since, however, individuality when acting should: show itself to be alive, or when thinking should grasp the living world as a system of thought, there ought to lie in thought itself a content to supply the sphere of the ego, in the former case with what is good, and, in the latter, true, in order that there should throughout be no other ingredient in what consciousness has to deal with, except the notion which is the real essence. But here, by the way in which the notion as an abstraction cuts itself off from the multiplicity of things, the notion has no content in itself; the content is a datum, is given. Consciousness, no doubt, abolishes the content as an external, a foreign existent, by the fact that it thinks it, but the notion is a determinate notion, and this determinateness of the notion is the alien element the notion contains within it. Stoicism, therefore, got embarrassed, when, as the expression went, it was asked for the criterion of truth in general, i.e properly speaking, for a content of thought itself. To the question, what is good and true, it responded by giving again the abstract, contentless thought; the true and good are to consist in reasonableness. But this self-identity of thought is simply once more pure form, in which nothing is determinate. The general terms true and good, wisdom and virtue, with which Stoicism has to stop short, are, therefore, in a general way, doubtless elevating; but seeing that they cannot actually and in fact reach any expanse of content, they soon begin to get wearisome.

This thinking consciousness, in the way in which it is thus constituted, as abstract freedom, is therefore only incomplete negation of otherness. Withdrawn from existence solely into itself, it has not there fully vindicated itself as the absolute negation of this existence. It holds the coent is held indeed to be only thought, but in doing so also takes thought as a specific determinate thought, and at the same time the general character of the content.

Scepticism

Scepticism is the realization of that of which Stoicism is merely the notion, and is the actual experience of what freedom of thought is; it is in itself and essentially the negative, and must so exhibit itself. With the reflexion of self-consciousness into the simple, pure thought of itself, independent existence or permanent determinateness has, in contrast to that reflexion, dropped as a matter of fact out of the infinitude of thought. In Scepticism, the entire unessentiality and unsubstantiality of this “other” becomes a reality for consciousness. Thought becomes thinking which wholly annihilates the being of the world with its manifold determinateness, and the negativity of free self-consciousness becomes aware of attaining, in these manifold forms which life assumes, real negativity.

It is clear from the foregoing that, just as Stoicism answers to the notion of independent consciousness, which appeared as a relation of lordship and bondage, Scepticism, on its side, corresponds to its realization, to the negative attitude towards otherness, to desire and labour. But if desire and work could not carry out for self-consciousness the process of negation, this polemical attitude towards the manifold substantiality of things will, on the other hand, be successful, because it turns against them as a free self-consciousness, and one complete within itself beforehand; or, expressed more definitely, because it has inherent in itself thought or the principle of infinitude where the independent elements in their distinction from one another are held to be merelv vanishing quantities. The differences, which, in the pure thinking of self are only the abstraction of differences, become here the whole of the differences; and every differentiated existent becomes a difference of self-consciousness.

With this we get determined the action of Scepticism in general, as also its mode and nature. It shows the dialectic movement, which is sense-certainty, perception, and understanding. It shows, too, the unessentiality of that which holds good in the relation of master and servant, and which for abstract thought itself passes as determinate. That relation involves, at the same time, a determinate situation, in which there are found even moral laws, as commands of the sovereign lord. The determinations in abstract thought, however, are scientific notions, into which formal contentless thought expands itself, attaching the notion, as a matter of fact in merely an external fashion, to the existence independent of it, and holding as valid only determinate notions, albeit they are still pure abstractions.

Dialectic as a negative process, taken immediately as it stands, appears to consciousness, in the first instance, as something at the mercy of which it is, and which does not exist through consciousness itself. In Scepticism, on the other hand, this negative process is a moment of self-consciousness, which does not simply find its truth and its reality vanish, without self-consciousness knowing how, but rather which, in the certainty of its own freedom, itself makes this other, so claiming to be real, vanish. Self-consciousness here not only makes the objective as such to disappear before the negations of Scepticism but also its own function in relation to the object, where the object is held to be objective and made good — i.e. its function of perceiving as also its process of securing what is in danger of being lost, viz. sophistry and its self-constituted and self-established truth. By means of this self-conscious negation, self-consciousness procures for itself the certainty of its own freedom, brings about the experience of that freedom, and thereby raises it into the truth. What vanishes is what is determinate, the difference which, no matter what its nature or whence it comes, sets up to be fixed and unchangeable. The difference has nothing permanent in it, and must vanish before thought because to be differentiated just means not to have being in itself, but to have its essential nature solely in an other. Thinking, however, is the insight into this character of what is differentiated; it is the negative function in its simple, ultimate form.

Sceptical self-consciousness thus discovers, in the flux and alternation of all that would stand secure in its presence, its own freedom, as given by and received from its own self. It is aware of being this of self-thinking thought, the unalterable and genuine certainty of its self. This certainty does not arise as a result out of something extraneous and foreign which stowed away inside itself its whole complex development; a result which would thus leave behind the process by which it came to be. Rather consciousness itself is thoroughgoing dialectical restlessness, this mêlée of presentations derived from sense and thought, whose differences collapse into oneness, and whose identity is similarly again resolved and dissolved — for this identity is itself determinateness as contrasted with non-identity. This consciousness, however, as a matter of fact, instead of being a self-same consciousness, is here neither more nor less than an absolutely fortuitous embroglio, the giddy whirl of a perpetually self-creating disorder. This is what it takes itself to be; for itself maintains and produces this self-impelling confusion. Hence it even confesses the fact; it owns to being, an entirely fortuitous individual consciousness — a consciousness which is empirical, which is directed upon what admittedly has no reality for it, which obeys what, in its regard, has no essential being, which realizes and does what it knows to have no truth. But while it passes in this manner for an individual, isolated. contingent, in fact animal life, and a lost self-consciousness, it also, on the contrary, again turns itself into universal self-sameness; for it is the negativity of all singleness and all difference. From this self-identity, or rather within its very self, it falls back once more into that contingency and confusion, for this very self-directed process of negation has to do solely with what is single and individual, and is occupied with what is fortuitous. This form of consciousness is, therefore, the aimless fickleness and instability of going to and fro, hither and thither, from one extreme of self-same self-consciousness, to the other contingent, confused and confusing consciousness. It does not itself bring these two thoughts of itself together. It finds its freedom, at one time, in the form of elevation above all the whirling complexity and all the contingency of mere existence, and again, at another time, likewise confesses to falling back upon what is unessential, and to being taken up with that. It lets the unessential content in its thought vanish; but in that very act it is the consciousness of something unessential. It announces absolute disappearance but the announcement is, and this consciousness is the evanescence expressly announced. It announces the nullity of seeing, hearing, and so on, yet itself sees and hears. It proclaims the nothingness of essential ethical principles, and makes those very truths the sinews of its own conduct. Its deeds and its words belie each other continually; and itself, too, has the doubled contradictory consciousness of immutability and sameness, and of utter contingency and non-identity with itself. But it keeps asunder the poles of this contradiction within itself; and bears itself towards the contradiction as it does in its purely negative process in general. If sameness is shown to it, it points out unlikeness, non-identity; and when the latter, which it has expressly mentioned the moment before, is held up to it, it passes on to indicate sameness and identity. Its talk, in fact, is like a squabble among self-willed children, one of whom says A when the other says B, and again B, when the other says A, and who, through being in contradiction with themselves, procure the joy of remaining in contradiction with one another.

In Scepticism consciousness gets, in truth, to know itself as a consciousness containing contradiction within itself. From the experience of this proceeds a new attitude which brings together the two thoughts which Scepticism holds apart. The want of intelligence which Scepticism manifests regarding itself is bound to vanish, because it is in fact one consciousness which possesses these two modes within it. This new attitude consequently is one which is aware of being the double consciousness of itself as self-liberating, unalterable, self-identical, and as utterly self-confounding, self-perverting; and this new attitude is the consciousness of this contradiction within itself.

In Stoicism, self-consciousness is the bare and simple freedom of itself. In Scepticism, it realizes itself, negates the other side of determinate existence, but, in so doing, really doubles itself, and is itself now a duality. In this way the duplication, which previously was divided between two individuals, the lord and the bondsman, is concentrated into one. Thus we have here that dualizing of self-consciousness within itself, which lies essentially in the notion of mind; but the unity of the two elements is not yet present.

The Unhappy Consciousness

Hence the Unhappy Consciousness (1) the Alienated Soul which is the consciousness of self as a divided nature, a doubled and merely contradictory being.

This unhappy consciousness, divided and at variance within itself, must, because this contradiction of its essential nature is felt to be a single consciousness, always have in the one consciousness the other also; and thus must be straightway driven out of each in turn, when it thinks it has therein attained to the victory and rest of unity. Its true return into itself, or reconciliation with itself, will, however, display the notion of mind endowed with a life and existence of its own, because it implicitly involves the fact that, while being an undivided consciousness, it is a double-consciousness. It is itself the gazing of one self-consciousness into another, and itself is both, and the unity of both is also its own essence; but objectively and consciously it is not yet this essence itself — is not yet the unity of both.

Since, in the first instance, it is the immediate, the implicit unity of both, while for it they are not one and the same, but opposed, it takes one, namely, the simple unalterable, as essential, the other, the manifold and changeable as the unessential. For it, both are realities foreign to each other. Itself, because consciousness of this contradiction, assumes the aspect of changeable consciousness and is to itself the unessential; but as consciousness of unchangeableness, of the ultimate essence, it must, at the same time, proceed to free itself from the unessential, i.e. to liberate itself from itself. For though in its own view it is indeed only the changeable, and the unchangeable is foreign and extraneous to it, yet itself is simple, and therefore unchangeable consciousness, of which consequently it is conscious as its essence, but still in such wise that itself is again in its own regard not this essence. The position, which it assigns to both, cannot, therefore, be an indifference of one to the other, i.e. cannot be an indifference of itself towards the unchangeable. Rather it is immediately both itself; and the relation of both assumes for it the form of a relation of essence to the non-essential, so that this latter has to be cancelled; but since both are to it equally essential and are contradictory, it is only the conflicting contradictory process in which opposite does not come to rest in its own opposite, but produces itself therein afresh merely as an opposite.

Here then, there is a struggle against an enemy, victory over whom really means being worsted, where to have attained one result is really to lose it in the opposite. Consciousness of life, of its existence and action, is merely pain and sorrow over this existence and activity; for therein consciousness finds only consciousness of its opposite as its essence — and of its own nothingness. Elevating itself beyond this, it passes to the unchangeable. But this elevation is itself this same consciousness. It is, therefore, immediately consciousness of the opposite, viz. of itself as single, individual, particular. The unchangeable, which comes to consciousness, is in that very fact at the same time affected by particularity, and is only present with this latter, Instead of particularity having been abolished in the consciousness of immutability, it only continues to appear there still.

In this process, however, consciousness experiences just this appearance of particularity in the unchangeable, and of the unchangeable in particularity. Consciousness becomes aware of particularity in general in the immutable essence, and at the same time it there finds its own particularity. For the truth of this process is precisely that the double consciousness is one and single. This unity becomes a fact to it, but in the first instance the unity is one in which the diversity of both factors is still the dominant feature. Owing to this, consciousness has before it the threefold way in which particularity is connected with unchangeableness. In one form it comes before itself as opposed to the unchangeable essence, and is thrown back to the beginning of that struggle, which is, from first to last, the principle constituting the entire situation. At another time it finds the unchangeable appearing in the form of particularity; so that the latter is an embodiment of unchangeableness, into which, in consequence, the entire form of existence passes. In the third case, it discovers itself to be this particular fact in the unchangeable. The first unchangeable is taken to be merely the alien, external Being, (2) which passes sentence on particular existence; since the second unchangeable is a form or mode of particularity like itself (3), it, i.e. the consciousness, becomes in the third place spirit (Geist), has the joy of finding itself therein, and becomes aware within itself that its particularity has been reconciled with the universals. (4)

What is set forth here as a mode and relation of the unchangeable, came to light as the experience through which self-consciousness passes in its unhappy state of diremption. This experience is now doubtless not its own one-sided process; for it is itself unchangeable consciousness; and this latter consequently, is a particular consciousness as well; and the process is as much a process of that unchangeable consciousness, which makes its appearance there as certainly as the other. For that movement is carried on in these moments: an unchangeable now opposed to the particular in general, then, being itself particular, opposed to the other particular, and finally at one with it. But this consideration, so far as it is our affair, (5) is here out of place, for thus far we have only had to do with unchangeableness as unchangeableness of consciousness, which, for that reason, is not true immutability, but is still affected with an opposite; we have not had before us the unchangeable per se and by itself; we do not, therefore, know how this latter will conduct itself. What has here so far come to light is merely this that to consciousness, which is our object here, the determinations above indicated appear in the unchangeable.

For this reason, then, the unchangeable consciousness also preserves, in its very form and bearing, the character and fundamental features of diremption and separate self-existence, as against the particular consciousness. For the latter it is thus altogether a contingency, a mere chance event, that the unchangeable receives the form of particularity; just as the particular consciousness merely happens to find itself opposed to the unchangeable, and therefore has this relation per naturam. Finally that it finds itself in the unchangeable appears to the particular consciousness to be brought about partly, no doubt, by itself, or to take place for the reason that itself is particular; but this union, both as regards its origin as well as in its being, appears partly also due to the unchangeable; and the opposition remains within. this unity itself. In point of fact, through the unchangeable assuming a definite form, the “beyond,” as a moment, has not only remained, but really is more securely established. For if the remote “beyond” seems indeed brought closer to the individual by this particular form of realization, on the other hand, it is henceforward fixedly opposed to the individual, a sensuous, impervious unit, with all the hard resistance of what is actual. The hope of becoming one therewith must remain a hope, i.e. without fulfilment, without present fruition; for between the hope and fulfilment there stands precisely the absolute contingency, or immovable indifference, which is involved in the very assumption of determinate shape and form, the basis and foundation of the hope. By the nature of this existent unit, through the particular reality it has assumed and adopted, it comes about of necessity that it becomes a thing of the past, something that has been somewhere far away, and absolutely remote it remains.

If, at the beginning, the bare notion of the sundered consciousness involved the characteristic of seeking to cancel it, qua particular consciousness, and become the unchangeable consciousness, the direction its effort henceforth takes is rather that of cancelling its relation to the pure unchangeable, without shape or embodied form, and of adopting only the relation to the unchangeable which has form and shape. (6) For the oneness of the particular consciousness with the unchangeable is henceforth its object and the essential reality for it, just as in the mere notion of it the essential object was merely the formless abstract unchangeable: and the relation found in this absolute disruption, characteristic of its notion, is now what it has to turn away from. The external relation, however, primarily adopted to the formed and embodied unchangeable, as being an alien extraneous reality, must be transmuted and raised to that of complete and thoroughgoing fusion and identification.

The process through which the unessential consciousness strives to attain this oneness, is itself a triple process, in accordance with the threefold character of the relation which this consciousness takes up to its transcendent and remote reality embodied in specific form. In one it is a pure consciousness; at another time a particular individual who takes up towards actuality the attitude characteristic of desire and labour; and in the third place it is a consciousness of its self-existence, its existence for itself. We have now to see how these three modes of its being are found and are constituted in that general relation.

In the first place, then, regarded as pure consciousness, the unchangeable embodied in definite historical form seems, since it is an object for pure consciousness, to be established as it is in its self-subsistent reality. But this, its reality in and for itself, has not yet come to light, as we already remarked. Were it to be in consciousness as it is in itself and for itself, this would certainly have to come about not from the side of consciousness, but from the unchangeable. But, this being so, its presence here is brought about through consciousness only in a one-sided way to begin with, and just for that reason is not found in a perfect and genuine form, but constantly weighted and encumbered with imperfection, with an opposite.

But although the “unhappy consciousness” does not possess this actual presence, it has, at the same time, transcended pure thought, so far as this is the abstract thought of Stoicism, which turns away from particulars altogether, and again the merely restless thought of Scepticism — so far, in fact, as this is merely particularity in the sense of aimless contradiction and the restless process of contradictory thought. It has gone beyond both of these; it brings and keeps together pure thought and particular existence, but has not yet risen to that level of thinking where the particularity of consciousness is harmoniously reconciled with pure though itself. It rather stands midway, at the point where abstract thought comes in contact with the particularity of consciousness qua particularity. Itself is this act of contact; it is the union of pure thought and individuality; and this thinking individuality or pure thought also exists as object for it, and the unchangeable is essentially itself an individual existence. But that this its object, the unchangeable, which assumes essentially the form of particularity, is its own self, the self which is particularity of consciousness-this is not established for it.

In this first condition, consequently, in which we treat it as pure consciousness, it takes up towards its object an attitude which is not that of thought; but rather (since it is indeed in itself pure thinking particularity and its object is just this pure thought, but pure thought is not their relation to one another as such), it, so to say, merely gives itself up to thought, devotes itself to thinking (geht an das Denken hin), and is the state of Devotion (Andacht). Its thinking as such is no more than the discordant clang of ringing bells, or a cloud of warm incense, a kind of thinking in terms of music, that does not get the length of notions, which would be the sole, immanent, objective mode of thought. This boundless pure inward feeling comes to have indeed its object; but this object does not make its appearance in conceptual form, and therefore comes on the scene as something external and foreign. Hence we have here the inward movement of pure emotion (Gemüth) which feels itself, but feels itself in the bitterness of soul-diremption. It is the movement of an infinite Yearning, which is assured that its nature is a pure emotion of this kind, a pure thought which thinks itself as particularity – a yearning that is certain of being known and recognized by this object, for the very reason that this object thinks itself as particularity. At the same time, however, this nature is the unattainable “beyond” which, in being seized, escapes or rather has already escaped. The “beyond” has already escaped. for it is in part the unchangeable, thinking itself as particularity, and consciousness, therefore, attains itself therein immediately, — attains itself, but as something opposed to the unchangeable; instead of grasping, the real nature consciousness merely feels, and has fallen back upon itself. Since, in thus attaining itself, consciousness cannot keep itself at a distance as this opposite, it has merely laid hold of what is unessential instead of having seized true reality. Thus, just as, on one side, when striving to find itself in the essentially real, it only lays hold of its own divided state of existence, so, too, on the other side, it cannot grasp that other [the essence] as particular or as concrete. That “other” cannot be found where it is sought; for it is meant to be just a “beyond,” that which can not be found. When looked for as a particular it is not universal, a thought-constituted particularity, not notion, but particular in the sense of an object, or a concrete actual, an object of immediate sense-consciousness, of sense certainty; and just for that reason it is only one which has disappeared. Consciousness, therefore, can only come upon the grave of its life. But because this is itself an actuality, and since it is contrary to the nature of actuality to afford a lasting possession, the presence even of that tomb is merely the source of trouble, toil, and struggle, a fight which must be lost. (7) But since consciousness has found out by experience that the grave of its actual unchangeable Being has no concrete actuality, that the vanished particularity qua vanished is not true particularity, it will give up looking for the unchangeable particular existence as something actual, or will cease trying to hold on to what has thus vanished. Only so is it capable of finding particularity in a true form, a form that is universal.

In the first instance, however, the withdrawal of the emotional life into itself is to be taken in such a way that this life of feeling, in its own regard, has actuality qua particular existence. It is pure emotion which, for us or per se, has found itself and satiated itself, for although it is, no doubt, aware in feeling that the ultimate reality is cut off from it, yet in itself this feeling is self-feeling; it has felt the object of its own pure feeling, and this object is its own self. It thus comes forward here as self-feeling, or as something actual on its own account. In this return into self, we find appearing its second attitude, the condition of desire and labour, which ensures for consciousness the inner certainty of its own self (which, as we saw, it has obtained) by the process of cancelling and enjoying the alien external reality, existence in the form of independent things. The unhappy consciousness, however, finds itself merely desiring and toiling; it is not consciously and directly aware that so to find itself rests upon the inner certainty of its self, and that its feeling of real being is this self-feeling. Since it does not in its own view have that certainty, its inner life really remains still a shattered certainty of itself; that confirmation of its own existence which it would receive through work and enjoyment, is, therefore, just as tottering and insecure; in other words, it must consciously nullify this certification of its own being, so as to find therein confirmation indeed, but confirmation only of what it is for itself, viz. of its disunion.

The actual reality, on which desire and work are directed, is, from the point of view of this consciousness, no longer something in itself null and void, something merely to be destroyed and consumed; but rather something like that consciousness itself, a reality broken in sunder, which is only in one respect essentially null, but in another sense also a consecrated world. This reality is a form and embodiment of the unchangeable, for the latter has in itself preserved particularity; and because, qua unchangeable, it is a universal, its particularity as a whole has the significance of all actuality.

If consciousness were, for itself, an independent consciousness, and reality were taken to be in and for itself of no account, then consciousness would attain, in work and enjoyment, the feeling of its own independence, by the fact that its consciousness would be that which cancels reality. But since this reality is taken to be the form and shape of the unchangeable, consciousness is unable of itself to cancel that reality. On the contrary, seeing that, consciousness manages to nullify reality and to obtain enjoyment, this must come about through the unchangeable itself when it disposes of its own form and shape and delivers this up for consciousness to enjoy.

Consciousness, on its part, appears here likewise as actual, though, at the same time, as internally shattered; and this diremption shows itself in the course of toil and enjoyment, to break up into a relation to reality, or existence for itself, and into an existence in itself. That relation to actuality is the process of alteration, or acting, the existence for itself, which belongs to the particular consciousness as such. But therein it is also in itself; this aspect belongs to the unchangeable “beyond.” This aspect consists in faculties and powers: an external gift, which the unchangeable here hands over for the consciousness to make use of.

In its action, accordingly, consciousness, in the first instance, has its being in the relation of two extremes. On one side it takes its stand as the active present (Diesseits), and opposed to it stands passive reality: both in relation to each other, but also both withdrawn into the unchangeable, and firmly established in themselves. From both sides, therefore, there is detached merely a superficial element to constitute their opposition; they are only opposed at the surface, and the play of opposition, the one to the other, takes place there.

The extreme of passive reality is sublated by the active extreme. Actuality can, however, on its own side, be sublated only because its own changeless essence sublates it, repels itself from itself, and hands over to the mercy of the active extreme what is thus repelled. Active force appears as the power wherein actual reality is dissolved. For that reason, however, this consciousness, to which the inherent reality, or ultimate essence. is an “other,” regards this power (which is the way it appears when active), as “the beyond,” that which lies remote from its self. Instead, therefore, of returning out of its activity into itself, and instead of having confirmed itself as a fact for its self, consciousness reflects back this process of action into the other extreme, which is thereby represented as purely universal, as absolute might, from which the movement in every direction started, and which is the essential life of the self-disintegrating extremes, as they at first appeared, and of the process of change as well.

In that the unchangeable consciousness contemns, its specific shape and form, and abandons it entirely, while, on the other hand, the individual consciousness “gives thanks,” i.e. denies itself the satisfaction of being conscious of its independence, and refers the essential substance of its action to the “beyond” and not to itself: by these two moments, in which both parts give themselves up the one to the other, there certainly arises in consciousness a sense of its own unity with the unchangeable. But, at the same time, this unity is affected with division, is again broken within itself and out of this unity there once more comes the opposition of universal and particular. For consciousness, no doubt, in appearance renounces the satisfaction of its self feeling, but it gets the actual satisfaction of that feeling, for it has been desire, work, and enjoyment; qua consciousness it has willed, has acted, has enjoyed. Its thanks similarly, in which it recognizes the other extreme as its true reality, and cancels itself, is itself its own act, which counterbalances the action of the other extreme, and meets with a like act the benefit handed over. If the former yields to consciousness merely its superficial content, yet consciousness still expresses thanks; and since it gives up its own action, i.e. its very essence, it, properly speaking, does more thereby than the other, which only renounces an outer surface. The entire process, therefore, is reflected into the extreme of particularity, not merely in actual desire, labour, and enjoyment, but even in the expression of thanks, where the reverse seems to take place. Consciousness feels itself therein as this particular individual, and does not let itself be deceived by the semblance of its renunciation; for the real truth of that procedure is that it has not given itself up. What has come about is merely the double reflection into both extremes; and the result is to repeat the cleavage into the opposed consciousness of the unchangeable and the consciousness of a contrasted opposite in the shape of willing, performing, enjoying, and of self-renunciation itself, or, in general, of self-existent particularity.

With this has come to light the third stage in the movement of this consciousness, a situation which follows from the second and one which in truth has, by its will and by its performance, proved itself independent. In the first situation we had only a “notion” of actual consciousness, the inward emotion, which is not yet real in action and enjoyment. The second is this actualization, as an external express action and enjoyment. With the return out of this stage, however, it is that which has got to know itself as a real and effective consciousness, or that whose truth consists in being in and for itself. But herein the enemy is discovered in its special and most peculiar form. In the battle of emotion this individual consciousness has the sense of being merely a tune, an abstract moment. In work and enjoyment. which are the realization of this unsubstantial existence, it can readily forget itself, and the consciousness of its own proper life found in this realization is overborne by grateful recognition, But this overthrow of its proper distinctiveness is in truth a return of consciousness into itself, and moreover into itself as the general reality.

This third attitude, wherein this genuine reality is one term, consists in so relating this reality to absolute universal Being, as to show it to be mere nothingness.(8) The course of this relation we have still to consider.

To begin with, as regards the contrasted relation of consciousness, in which its reality is taken to be immediately naught, its actual performance thus becomes a doing of nothing at all; its enjoyment becomes a feeling of its own unhappiness. In consequence, activity and enjoyment lose all universal content and significance; for in that case they would have a substantiality of their own: and both withdraw into the state of particularity, to which consciousness is directed in order to cancel them. Consciousness discovers itself as this concrete particular in the functions of animal life. These latter, instead of being performed unconsciously and naturally as something which, per se, is of no significance, and can acquire no importance and essential value for spirit, these latter, since it is in them that the enemy is seen in his proper and peculiar shape, are rather an object of strenuous concern and serious occupation, and become precisely the most important consideration.(9) Since, however this enemy creates itself in its very defeat, consciousness, by giving the enemy a fixedness of being and of meaning, instead of getting rid of him, really never gets away from him and finds itself constantly defiled. And since, at the same time, this object of its exertions, instead of being something essential, is the very meanest, instead of being a universal, is the merest particular — we have here before us merely a personality confined within its narrow self and its petty activity, a personality brooding over itself, as unfortunate as it is pitiably destitute.

But all the same both of these, both the feeling of its misfortune and the poverty of its own action, are points of connection to which to attach the consciousness of its unity with the unchangeable. For the attempted immediate destruction of its actual existence is affected through the thought of the unchangeable and takes place in this relation to the unchangeable. The mediate relation constitutes the essence of the negative process, in which this consciousness directs itself against its particularity of being, which, however, qua relation, is at the same time in itself positive, and will bring this its unity to light as an objective fact for this consciousness itself.

This mediate relation is consequently a connected inferential process (Schluss), in which particularity, establishing itself at first in opposition to the inherent essence, is bound together and united with this other term only through a third term. Through this middle term the one extreme, unchangeable consciousness, has a being for the unessential consciousness, in which, at the same time, is also involved that the latter likewise has a being for the former, solely through that middle term; and this middle term is thus one which presents both extremes to one another, and acts as the minister of each in turn in dealing with the other. This medium is itself a conscious being, for it is an action mediating consciousness as such; the content of this action is the destruction and annihilation, which consciousness has in view in dealing with its particularity.

In the middle term, then, this consciousness gets freed from action and enjoyment, in the sense of its own action and enjoyment. It puts away from itself, qua self-existent extreme, the substance of its will, and throws on to the mediating term, or the ministering agency,(10) its own proper freedom of decision, and herewith the guilt of its own act. This mediator, being in direct communication with the unchangeable Being, renders service by advising what is just and right. The act, since this follows upon obedience to a deliverance enunciated by another, ceases, as regards the performance or the willing of the act, to be the agent's own proper deed. There is still left, however, to the subordinate consciousness, its objective aspect, namely, the fruit of its labour, and enjoyment. These, therefore, it casts away as well, and just as it disclaimed its own will, so it contemns such reality as it received in work and in enjoyment. It renounces these, partly as being the accomplished truth of its self-conscious independence, when it seeks to do something quite foreign to itself, thinking and speaking what, for it, has no sense or meaning;(11) partly, too, as being external property — when it demits somewhat of the possession acquired through its toil. It also gives up the enjoyment it had — when with its fastings and its mortifications it once more absolutely denies itself that enjoyment.

Through these moments — the negative abandonment first of its own right and power of decision, then of its property and enjoyment, and finally the positive moment of carrying on what it does not understand-it deprives itself, completely and in truth, of the consciousness of inner and outer freedom, or reality in the sense of its own existence for itself. It has the certainty of having in truth stripped itself of its Ego, and of having turned its immediate self-consciousness into a “thing,” into an objective external existence.

It could ensure its self-renunciation and self-abandonment solely by this real and vital sacrifice [of its self ]. For only thereby is the deception got rid of, which lies in inner acknowledgment of gratitude through heart, sentiment, and tongue — an acknowledgment which indeed disclaims all power of independent self-existence, and ascribes this power to a gift from above, but in this very disclaimer retains for itself its own proper and peculiar life, outwardly in the possession it does not resign, inwardly in the consciousness of the decision which itself has resolved upon and in the consciousness of its own self-constituted content, which it has not exchanged for a content coming from without and filling it with meaningless ideas and phrases.

But in the sacrifice actually accomplished. while consciousness has cancelled the action as its own act, it has also implicitly demitted and put off its unhappy condition. Yet that this demission(12) has implicitly taken place, is effected by the other term of the logical process (Schluss) here involved, the term which is the inherent and ultimate reality, That sacrifice of the subordinate term, however, was at the same time not a onesided action; it involves the action of the other. For giving up one's own will is only in one aspect negative; in principle, or in itself, it is at the same time positive, positing and affirming the will as an other,. and, specifically, affirming the will as not a particular but universal. This consciousness takes this positive significance of the negatively affirmed particular will to be the will of the other extreme, the will, which, because it is simply an “other” for consciousness, assumes the form of advice, or counsel, not through itself, but through the third term, the mediator. Hence its will certainly becomes, for consciousness, universal will, inherent and essential will, but is not itself in its own view this inherent reality. The giving up of its own will as particular is not taken by it to be in principle the positive element of universal will. Similarly its surrender of possession and enjoyment has merely the same negative significance, and the universal which it thereby comes to find is, in its view, not its own doing proper. This unity of objectivity and independent self-existence which lies in the notion of action, and which therefore comes for consciousness to be the essential reality and object — as this is not taken by consciousness to be the principle of its action, neither does it become an object for consciousness directly and through itself. Rather, it makes the mediating minister express this still halting certainty, that its unhappy state is only implicitly the reverse, i.e. is only implicitly action bringing self-satisfaction in its act or blessed enjoyment; that its pitiable action too is only implicitly the reverse, namely, absolute action; that in principle action is only really action when it is the action of some particular individual. But for its self, action and its own concrete action remain something miserable and insignificant, its enjoyment pain, and the sublation of these, positively considered, remains a mere “beyond.” But in this object, where it finds its own action and existence, qua this particular consciousness, to be inherently existence and action as such, there has arisen the idea of Reason, of the certainty that consciousness is, in its particularity, inherently and essentially absolute, or is all reality.
