Course description: This course is designed to help advanced (second year or above) Economics Ph.D. students gain hands-on skills when conducting research using empirical methods in Industrial Organization. The course consists of two modules on demand estimation and auctions. The course consists of two modules on demand estimation and auctions. In the former, we will consider both, product space and characteristics space approaches to demand estimation, and models covered will be AIDS models, logit estimation, overview of the BLP method, and estimation of nested and random coefficients logit models. In the latter, we will discuss the main results in auctions and selected applications to policy. Then, we will discuss some early structural work and lead into Guerre, Perrigne, and Vuong's (2000) paper and estimation. Given that the GPV is the basis for many ongoing works on auctions, the section will introduce a few examples/extensions to GPV with entry. Every effort will be made to ensure that the material is ready to apply. As such, instruction will consist of lectures, examples of codes, combined with opportunities for individual feedback and support on projects that apply the techniques.
Pre-requisites: A master’s level knowledge of econometrics will be assumed, but no specific training in either auction or demand estimation methodology.
Fees: Free of charge to SeNSS students. All others - £85, which may be waived upon request. Limit of 30 students, with priority given to SeNSS students and those attending from SeNSS institutions.
