As a teacher, I believe that it is my responsibility to my school, students, student parents, and others to know what I am teaching. I should understand major concepts, assumptions, debates, processes of inquiry, and ways of knowing that are central to teaching Mathematics. Also, I consider that math is an infinite subject and that there are many different ways of accomplishing problems that I may not have thought of. However, this does not mean that I will not be considering as many possible strategies as I can in preparation for a lesson. In order to best prepare students for all of these different strategies, I will be prepared to teach topics in many variations in order to appeal to every different learning style represented in the room.
Also, I know that there are many people in school systems and the world who are not as passionate about math as I am. I will consider all opinions on math as I teach various concepts to the students. On the other hand, this does not mean that I will not hold every one of my students to a high standard. Many people believe the misconception that they will never use mathematics in their lives as a member of society, however, I believe that it is the problem-solving still that is the most important takeaway from your time in math class, not necessarily the quadratic formula. With this in mind, I will be prepared to teach students that are passionate about the world of math, but also teach those that would prefer to spend their time elsewhere.
