Project Summary
Beyond the Galleries will seek to feature curatorial research happening behind the scenes at the Ashmolean Museum through an interactive in-gallery experience. The Ashmolean is a world-class institution showcasing thousands of years of human activity through displays of works of art in its permanent galleries. However, not all of its research can be engaged with publicly as only a relatively small number of its collections are on display with the vast majority of objects kept in storerooms and study rooms. The Museum’s outstanding collection of works on paper for instance, cannot be displayed in the permanent galleries because of their sensitivity to light exposure. The Beyond the Galleries pilot project will present the extensive research being done on the drawings and prints from the Western Art department, initially focusing on recent research projects such as Young Rembrandt, The Getty Paper Project and ERC’s Chromotope. The interactive in-gallery experience will consist of a small lounge area with a couple of armchairs and a small coffee table, where visitors will be able to take a rest while exploring current research through an interactive web app installed on touchscreen tablets and also accessible on their own devices through a QR code.
