To improve spotting for beginner dancers:
Focus on a Spot: Pick a spot at eye level to focus on during turns.
Snap the Head: Turn your head quickly, making it the last to leave and first to return to the spot.
Practice Slowly: Start with slow turns to build control before speeding up.
Engage the Core: Strong posture and core help maintain balance during spotting.
These simple steps can help beginners master spotting and improve their turns.

Technique Tip: Jumps
To achieve higher jumps in dance, focus on strengthening your core and leg muscles. Engage your core during takeoff, and push through the balls of your feet for maximum lift. Keep your knees soft on landing to absorb impact, and practice deep pliés to build explosive power in your jumps.
Here are some short exercises to help:
Plié Jumps (Relevé): Perform a deep plié and explode into a jump, landing softly back into a plié. Repeat in sets of 10 to build leg power and control.
Tuck Jumps: Jump as high as you can while tucking your knees to your chest. Focus on engaging your core and lifting from your legs. Do 3 sets of 8.
Core Planks with Leg Lifts: Hold a plank position, and alternate lifting each leg. This strengthens your core and lower back for better jump height. Try holding each lift for 5 seconds, and repeat for 10 reps on each side.
Single-Leg Calf Raises: Stand on one leg and slowly rise onto the ball of your foot, then lower down with control. This strengthens your calves for a more powerful jump. Aim for 3 sets of 12 on each leg.
Explosive Box Jumps: Jump onto a sturdy box or platform, focusing on using your legs and core to propel you upward. Step down carefully and repeat 8-10 times to build explosive strength.
These exercises will help improve your strength, balance, and overall jump height over time!

Technique Tip:
Enjoy the moment. Dance is a GIFT and you are lucky to have this opportunity to share your passion with the audience. Dancing is what inspires you and makes you feel alive — don’t let a trophy or score take that away from you. When you step on that stage, try your best to enjoy the moment doing what you love.
"The energy doesn't end at the hands. I want such intensity that it feels like light is streaming from every finger."

Technique Tip:
Straightening Your Legs Out of a Plié
Imagine your legs are springs. When you push a spring in to a table (bending your knees into a demi-plié) and then let go(straightening your legs), what happens? It quickly jumps up and away from the table because of the energy that was stored in the coil of the spring when you were pushing it down.
Try thinking of the same idea when you straighten your legs from a plié. You must push straight down into the floor with your legs and feet. Don’t just casually straighten your legs.. otherwise you’re just bending and straightening your legs. And while of course that is what a plié looks like, its the intention and the purpose you put into straightening your legs that makes it functional and allows dancers to jump high with explosive energy and do multiple pirouettes.
"Think of the magic of that foot, comparatively small, upon which your whole weight rests. It's a miracle, and the dance is a celebration of that miracle." Martha Graham

No Classes the Week of Thanksgiving!
No classes November 20th- 26th! Have a great Thanksgiving break!
Technique Tip:
Although it may seem elementary, it’s important to remember to stretch every day to improve your dance technique. Your stretching routine doesn’t need to be long or overly complicated, however the simple act of getting up and getting your body moving is a great way to jump start the day. Stretching will help you improve your dancing by making you more flexible and increasing your range of motion (hold stretches for at least 30 seconds without "bouncing"). It will also reduce the risk of injuries like pulled muscles.
Here are a few things to avoid when stretching,
Avoid trying to progress too quickly in your stretching, which can strain or sprain ligaments, tendons or muscles. Dancers need to gradually increase stress on muscles so they have time to adapt.
Warming up properly before stretching is essential. If you’re stretching a cold muscle, or stretching for so long that muscles get cold, you actually end up stretching the joint instead.
Perhaps most importantly, strength building should go hand in hand with stretching. Focusing on strength can benefit your functional flexibility more than anything else.
“Dancing is creating a sculpture that is visible only for a moment.”
― Ozan

"If you don't feel challenged, it's because you're not doing enough. Ballet should never feel comfortable. If you're comfortable when you dance, you're not pushing yourself hard enough. 100 % is not enough. You have to give 200%. One tendu takes years of hard work and will never be perfect. Everything in ballet is a challenge." - George Balanchine
