AN INSURANCE WARNING FOR CLUBS AND PLAYERS
Rugby Australia’s insurance policy assumes players are Medicare eligible.
The policy does NOT pay medical expenses that can be claimed under Medicare.
Individuals without a Medicare card or private health insurance are considered Medicare ineligible and are responsible for all costs.
For example, a player who presents to a hospital emergency dept with a rugby injury and cannot show they are Medicare eligible or privately insured may be required to pay for EVERYTHING UPFRONT. That includes payment just to see a doctor; x-rays or scans, medicine, etc. And if surgery is required then payment may be demanded for theatre costs, surgeon, anaesthetist, etc. This is not hypothetical!
Obviously, the vast majority of players are Medicare eligible.
You can enrol in Medicare if you live in Australia and you are:
Also, you may be able to enrol in Medicare if you’re visiting from a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement country:
Belgium New Zealand
Finland Norway
Italy Slovenia
Ireland Sweden
Malta United Kingdom
Netherlands
Notably for Rugby – the Pacific Islands are NOT covered by a reciprocal health care agreement. Therefore clubs should ensure that any Pacific Island players (and indeed any player from a country not listed above) are Medicare eligible or have private health insurance that covers medical expenses whilst playing sport.
