The Penrith Rugby Club was established in 1965 and was formally known as the Nepean District. The club played in sub-district competitions and then the now defunct Sydney Second Division Competition. The club was promoted to the Sydney First Division Competition in 1995 playing in the Shute Shield Premier Rugby Competition. The club joined the ACT's John I Dent Cup for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
The Penrith Club is supported by the Penrith District Junior Rugby Union, which has 3 Junior clubs and fields both boys and girls Junior Representative Teams beginning from u10s. Players play regularly for either the Blue Mountains Blue Tongues based at Lapstone, Western Raptors based at Hassall Grove and Penrith RSL Silverbacks who are based also at Nepean Rugby Park. There are additional competitions for over 35s and Golden Oldies via the Penrith Legless Emus.
The Penrith catchment area is the Nepean Hawkesbury Valley region from Campbelltown in the South to Hawkesbury, Richmond and Windsor in the North, and Blacktown in the East and the Blue Mountains in the West, thereby forming the Greater Western Sydney Region. The Penrith Rugby Club is committed to the development of the game in Greater Western Sydney and particularly in the Nepean Valley region catchment area.
