This Strider Education Foundation created this initiative as a plug and play program for schools to have everything they need to teach kindergarten and first grade how to ride a bike. Schools are tasked with raising $4,000 so they can be equipped with; a fleet of 14x sport bikes, kickstands, pedal conversion kits, helmets, and an 8 lesson curriculum aligned to SHAPE America National PE Standards.
The NYC Office of School and Wellness helped make this opportunity possible. They put us into a cohort of schools to lower the cost of fundraising. This meant we had to share a fleet between the schools in our cohort and rotate after 5 weeks. A positive for this method was that I did not have to worry about storing the bikes. A negative was that I could not use the bikes whenever I wanted and only had them at my school for a limited time.
We began with using the bikes as balance bikes with no pedals. Students progressed from walking, to running, to pushing, and then gliding. Once students were comfortable with gliding and were able to maintain balance and control, they progressed to pedals. The lessons used purposeful practice tasks, relays, and other fun games and activities to help students learn the skills to ride a bike.
Fun At Bat is a free entry-level bat and ball program for kids with an emphasis on character development, functional movement, active play, and fun. Once you apply and are approved, USA Baseball provides equipment from Franklin Sports, a curriculum aligned to SHAPE America National Standards, a book set, and access to a free online instructor training module. This program provides a fun way for students to work on their striking and other movement skills, learn the fundamentals and rules of baseball, and develop social and emotional skills.
