"Academic freedom and shared governance are fundamental characteristics of higher education and necessary for preserving an independent forum for free inquiry and expression. The Community College movement, of which we are a part, is not only about creating better workers; it is about creating a better society, serving the common good, and preparing students for work and life in a democracy."
At a public institution of higher education, the Faculty have a critical role and responsibility in its shared governance. At Pima, this is primarily accomplished in three forums that are infused with democratic principles to carry our voice:
Your Discipline Faculty Committee (DFC, formerly CDAC) addresses discipline standards, curriculum, and assists in Faculty hiring. The College could not do this without you.
The Faculty Senate advises the Board, Chancellor, and Administration of Faculty views and concerns, particularly on academic matters, reviews College policies, and recommends members to College committees.
PCCEA advocates for the Faculty on compensation and working conditions through the All Employee Representative Council. We also address individual concerns, assist faculty and administrators in navigating policy, and propose changes to improve it.
The Pima Community College Governing Board is elected by the voters of Pima County, sets the mission and goals for the College, and is responsible for selecting and evaluating the Chancellor.
