Food Beets

Welcome to Food Beets!

The Village of Pawling is known for so may things! Our restaurants and walkability are at the top of the list. There are so many great places to walk while you are in the Village. If you want a long walk, head on over to Lakeside and hike around the lake! For a shorter stroll, go check out Dewey's burial site (did you know that he was thought to have beet Ike in the presidential election?). Once you're walked out, you can grab some grub in the Village. Just about any kind of food you might want can be found there. I know that some of them must serve some beets, too. :)

Local Dairy Sources

Dairy farming has been in Dutchess County since before it was a county, and Pawling before it was a village or a town. The Quakers from Quaker Hill made butter and cheese that was sent on a boat down the Hudson river to New York City, and then when the railroad came there were special cars just to bring milk to the city. Even today, although a lot of our farms are gone, there are awesome choices for fish milk, cheese and most importantly ice cream! Here are some of your possibilities – let me know if I miss any. I’m always willing to check out ice cream for you guys.

The Vincent family has owned this lovely valley farm for generations and a couple of years ago they made sure to preserve it as farmland forever. Plus, they’ve been awarded a state Dairy of Distinction. You may have seen their cows grazing if you’re driving near Dover on 22, but you’ve got to meet Toby the barn cat/ Ambassador. The only thing against them is their terrible taste in puns! Their milk is raw, which is an argument I’m not getting into here, and there’s curbside pickup for vegetables and fruit, cheese from the milk, eggs, meat and more.

High on a hilltop ( near Soukup from our maple sugar story and JSK beef, which we haven’t got to yet but you should), Hoofprint is another example of the new generation of farmers, people coming back to the land and turning it into yumminess for us. Their goats give milk, which is also made into cheese and yogurt. Plus they’re right next door to Locust Hill Market, which is actually where you buy the milk etc., along with meta and vegetables.

These guys only seem to be on Facebook, so I had a really evil moment where I wasn’t going to share them with you. But then I realize that I can’t eat quite that much ice cream by myself! Kelly’s will pack their handmade ice cream into quarts or pints for you, Plus they’ve got sundaes and sandwiches and all a nice little outdoors to sit in.

I actually got my two pints (don’t judge) of Zoe’s at Soukup. One is chocolate and one is lemon poppyseed which, as a friend said, is like a muffin only better. If you go to the actual barn, you can also get burgers, hot dogs, fries and more. The burgers are JSK beef (we really are going to tell you about them soon), and the ice cream is made from Hudson Valley Fresh milk. I bet you thought that I was getting a little confused about dairy farmers versus just dairy goodness! But no, Zoe‘s is using local farm milk, which comes from a consortium of local farmers who got together to sell their milk under one green label you may already have seen.
