I designed and built a test setup for accelerated wear testing of various components. The system featured a configurable oscillating arm capable of applying a controlled force, allowing for flexible test conditions. The structure was primarily constructed from bent sheet metal and box tubing for fast and easy fabrication.
CAD of the system
The arm was engineered for corrosion resistance using primarily stainless steel and plastic components. A linkage mechanism enabled automatic oscillation for ease of control, and the arm was designed to conform to a variety of surface geometries.
Force application was adjustable via pneumatic pressure or interchangeable springs, while oscillation amplitude could be tuned by repositioning a linkage attachment point.
I performed FEA to verify that all components could withstand expected loads and used hand calculations to confirm the motors met power and speed requirements. The system has been assembled and tested. Fleet plans to use it for extended testing after my departure when they are able to get samples.
