About Me

I am Patrick McGuire, a fourth year mechanical engineering student at Northeastern University. I have been building underwater robots for over 10 years, with experience in mechanical design, electrical design and software development. I like working on fast paced development of new systems, and hands-on projects that require field work. I am particularly interested in scalable lower cost systems that focus on environmental research.

At Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute I designed, built and programmed TideRider, an underwater water quality monitoring robot that navigates using the tides. I created the mechanical system in SolidWorks, developed the full control stack, and completed 5 ocean tests totaling over 30 days of deployment.

At AerospaceNU I served as technical lead for our NASA Student Launch team,  where our team met all goals, including flying within 5% of target altitude and transmitting all scientific data. I serve as treasurer managing an ~$80k annual budget, as well as leading  the rocketry electronics and software group. I earned L2 NAR certification, flying a custom rocket to 13,000ft at Mach 1.7.

At Apeiron Labs I designed and tested a system to deploy their underwater glider from a small boat and created alignment features for multiple machined components. I also built a hydraulic pump characterization system for large dataset collection.

At Fleet Robotics I worked on docking and charging for their ship hull cleaning robot, engineering electronics, power, actuation, networking, and sensors. I also improved manufacturability, including for a large welded frame.
