The Heritage Building, the old wooden building of the Grade School, which served as a commemoration of the first classroom structure constructed in the 1930's and 1940's was partially demolished to give way to the construction of the concrete three and four storey buildings in the 1980's and 1990's and fully demolished in 2014 due to safety reasons and to give way to the construction of the Aloysius Gonzaga Building.
The first phase of the 3 storey concrete building was formally occupied in June 1985 and was named Fr. Achilles de Gryse (D building). The second phase with additional classrooms was completed in June 1990. At present, the first floor houses the Principal's Office, Cashier's Office, Office of the Registrar's Staff, Faculty Room, PAASCU Room, Home Economics Room and the comfort rooms for the boys and girls. The second floor contains the Guidance Office, The Guidance Testing Room, Coordinator's Office and classrooms of the primary level. The third floor has the Science Laboratory and intermediate level classrooms.
Named after Rev. Constant Jurgens (J building), the four storey concrete building was inaugurated on December 8, 1998. This third phase was built for the formal merging of the then SMU Training Department and the SMU Elementary Central into one Department for the SY 1999-2000, thus the name SMU Elementary Department, which became SMU Grade School Department. In SY 2011-2012, SMU Grade School Department was renamed SMU Grade School.
The St. John Paul II Building (JP II Building) was built and inaugurated on June 3, 2011. This building includes the stage where the flag ceremony, assemblies and programs are done. On the ground floor are the Music Room and the offices of the Coordinators of Marian CARES, Student's Well-being and Deportment, and the DRRM, Sanitation and Campus Safety. The chapel is at the second floor together with the office of the Coordinator of Christian Faith Education, GMRC and Campus Ministry. The third floor houses the Smart Laboratory where pupils and teachers conduct their interactive learning.
In 2014, the fourth phase was completed with the St. Aloysius Gonzaga Building- a three-storey building which was inaugurated on September 8, 2015. The building houses
THE BEGINNINGS
Nestled in an ideally wholesome environment accessible to most forms of land transportation, Saint Mary’s University Grade School (SMUGS) has been considered as one of the familiar landmarks not only in the town of Bayombong but also in the province of Nueva Vizcaya.
SMU Grade School is the cradle of Saint Mary’s University as it started as a grade school in 1928. It has metamorphosed from a very simple bamboo and cogonal structure which housed elementary school classrooms.
Saint Mary’s University traces its roots back to the dream and initiative of the late Msgr. Constant Jurgens, CICM, then Parish Priest of Bayombong and one of the earliest CICM missionaries to arrive in the Philippines. He wanted to establish a school to give the children of his parishioners the benefit of a Christian education. He purchased a lot and some materials for this purpose, but then, he was recalled to Europe, thus it was his successor, Rev. Fr. Achilles de Gryse, CICM, who saw his dream through.
While Msgr. Constant Jurgens was in Europe, he was drawn to the mission exhibits of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Holy Mother of God. He requested for a number of Dutch Sisters from Veghel, Netherlands to come to the Philippines and be his partners of his dream. These Dutch Sisters, Mother Chantal Tummers, Sister Catharina Hendrickx, Sister Alphonsa Jacobs, Sister Margaretha Hermus, and Sister Bertholda Bos arrived in Bayombong to run the parochial school. This marked the beginning of the Catholic Education in Nueva Vizcaya.
Our motto, "sapientia a Deo (Latin)," translated as "wisdom from God," quoted from 1 Cor 1:30, explicitly expresses the Christo-centric character of the university that puts Christ Jesus, the Divine wisdom, at the center of the Marian community, and the core of every goal of the university.
The image of the Blessed Virgin Mary seated on a throne with the child Jesus on her lap represents "Sedes Sapientiae - Seat of Wisdom," which is one of the many devotional titles for Mary. Mary, revered as the Theotokos, Mother of God, whose total submission to the will of God granted her nurturance of the incarnate wisdom of God - Jesus Christ, and accorded her the "model of discipleship", our patroness and our exemplar.
The belfry symbolizes the role of the Marian family in beckoning of people in communion with the local and universal Church in the mission of evangelization and Christian education.
The rose is a symbol of devotion to the Blessed Mother (Rosary) as Queen of heaven and earth, reminding the Marian community of Mary's participation in Christ's passion. The rose is also the symbol of Mary's charity attributed to Saint Bernard of Clairvaux heralding the university's mission to transform the poor and the marginalized to empowered communities.
Saint Mary’s University Grade School is envisioned as a cradle of excellent basic education transforming pupils to be excellent and innovative, who have genuine passion for Christ’s mission.
Saint Mary’s University Grade School is committed to develop in pupils the basic knowledge, skills, habits, attitudes and values necessary to prepare them for secondary education and to make them efficient and intelligent citizen in a democratic society, instilled with Gospel values. The emblem of Saint Mary's University bears the following key elements with their significant m
