Recognizing a deep need for interfaith healing in our larger Denton community, I proposed and then organized Denton's first truly interfaith service held on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. It was a powerful experience for everyone and helped us begin to move past Denton's own history of having its mosque fire-bombed in September 2001.
I have led annual worship services in January where people could prepare for the new year. The first part of the service includes a guided meditation to recall the past year. Then I invite people to write down their regrets, burdens, or anything else that needs to be let go. A large bowl and candle are available and participants bring forth their papers to burn. People then consider one intention for the coming year. I provide them with a piece of paper to write down their intentions and an envelope for them to address to themselves. I collect their sealed intentions and mail them back to them in March (just in case they forget!). I love this time, between the old and new year, to center and ground.
In December 2015 Denton Unitarian Universalist Fellowship suffered a massive fire. After eight months of rebuilding, we returned to our building. In August 2016, I collaborated with John Beckett, then President of Denton's Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans, to lead our re-dedication and reconsecration of the building. The Denton Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans is a robust group with high usage of the building and their participation in this event was central.
Evening time creates a special opportunity for a inward reflection. I lead evening services that have included crystal singing bowls, candle-lighting for intentions, stations for people to experience someone listening and praying with them, Reiki energy, creative art meditations, guided meditation, song, and readings. A sample service is shared here.
