Pack 558 Pinewood Derby Rules
Each car will be weighed with the "official scale" and any car that exceeded 5.0oz will be returned to modify then. No changes will be done to ANY Pinewood Derby car on the day of the race. Lubrication of the Car wheels will be allowed the day of the race, but must be completed 15 minutes prior to the start of the race.
We will also perform a quick visual inspection of each car against the following inspection points:
Car Dimension Rules
The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
The overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.
The car must have 1 ¾” clearance between the wheels.
The car must have 3/8” clearance underneath the body so it does not rub on the track.
Derby Car Weight Rules
The car shall not exceed 5.0 ounces.
The official race scale that is used at car check-in shall be considered final.
Car Modifications Not Allowed
Use only the woodblock, wheels and axles provided in the box you are given.
You may use a design from any source you desire, but you must use the woodblock provided to make that design.
Only the wheels and axles in the box maybe used. The wheels may not be cut, drilled, beveled or rounded. You may remove the seams and imperfections from the wheels.
The axles may be altered, polished and lubricated.
Wheel bearings, washers and springs are not allowed.
The Car must be freewheeling, no starting devices.
Addition of paint, decals, driver, car trim, and painting is permitted.
The entire car must stage behind the starting pin. No part can extend over the top of the starting pin.
Other Pinewood Derby Race Rules
Once a car passes inspection and is entered into the race, only race committee members can touch it.
If the car loses a wheel, or is otherwise damaged during the race, the Scout shall have 5 minutes to make necessary repairs.
Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee after repairs are made, before it will be allowed to continue to compete.
The Inspection Committee has the responsibility to disqualify those cars that do not meet these rules.
Remember, this is the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby.
We understand that Parental help will be necessary; however, we ask that the Cub Scout be the one who does the MAJORITY of the work on his car.
Leaders and Siblings may make cars, if they wish, and race separately. We must have prior notice.
