Activities:
As done at the Olympics, group/relay activities are desired to avoid just the most athletic kids winning the individual activity ribbons. Therefore, the following activities are planned:
Burlap Race Relay
Have kids race in relay format after getting into burlap sack
Patrol that completes the challenge fastest “wins”
Needs:
burlap sacks (4) Robert Tran has them
3-Legged Race Relay
Have kids from each patrol find a buddy to race together.
Race to designated point and return to team. While one pair is out, the parents help tie up the next pair.
Patrol that completes the challenge fastest “wins”
Needs:
Old neckerchiefs, or create “scarf” by cutting up old blanket. Likely need about 2 per patrol and assume 4 patrols, so 8 ribbons/scarves. Robert Tran has ties for legs.
Soccer cones (6-8) or some other obvious item to designate return point.
Egg Relay (Name needed)
Give out an egg (hard boiled) for each team member to carry on spoon to cone 10-20 feet away and back to team for relay.
Use a yogurtland spoon to carry the egg.
If the egg is dropped then the scout has to count to 3-5 seconds for penalty.
Needs:
Hard boiled eggs (10-12) (name needed)
Yogurtland spoons (8) (Paul will bring these)
Soccer cones (6-8) or some other obvious item to designate return point.
Crab Crawl Relay
Have kids go one at a time and crab crawl to designated point and come back to team.
Each team member participates via relay.
All patrols compete at the same time at a designated point.
Needs:
Soccer cones (6-8) or some other obvious item to designate return point.
Last Event: Island Challenge
Place hula hoop on ground and the entire patrol has to fit within the hoop and hold for 10 seconds.
Needs:
hula hoops (Robert Tran and Paul have 4 hoops)
Backup idea for smaller item that can be used if the hula hoop is too easy/large (like plastic trash bag, frisbee) Assume 4 groups do this at the same time.
Water Balloon Toss -
Have team form pairs and they toss water balloon between them.
All youth participate at the same time with parents watching.
The pair that goes the furthest “wins” for their patrol.
Needs:
Water balloons filled for event (40-50)
The following parents versus youth game can be played at the end to let the kids enjoy beating parents/adults
Tug of War - youth versus Pack 541 leaders
Tug of War - youth versus adults (Paul checking on rope with Raj Ladva)
The following are some additional fun activities that can be used to keep the kids busy.
Capture the Flag game - could be played using neckerchiefs between 2 teams
Awards/Completion:
At the completion of each of 6 games, each patrol is given 2 ping pong balls, each with one scout law word written on the ball. At the end, the groups need to line up the balls for adult review to make sure the balls are put into order as presented in the Scout Law. Consider having a specially marked ball for the patrol that “wins” the game.
Needs:
Robert Tran will handle the ping pong balls.
