Project objectives

The overall objective of this collaboration is twofold:

1 / First of all, strengthen the, several years old, connection between the two partners, especially subsequent to the two Summer Schools in Romania (Marie Curie Action) and visiting professor stays (R. Olariu and Arsene C.) ;

2 / To share each of the both partners skills and equipments in order to advance scientific expertise and conduct joint research with complementary approach angles.

The progress and the implementation of this twofold come to lean on a Lefe-Chat (INSU) research project obtained in 2016 by French party which specifically mentioned the deposit of a PHC Brancusi project and SOS-AROMATIC project obtained in 2015 by Romanian party. The Lefe-Chat project aims to better understand the atmospheric fate of biogenic oxygenated volatile organic compounds like unsaturated aldehydes and alcohols. The SOS-AROMATIC project aims to study the NO3 oxidation of substituted aromatic compounds under simulated atmospheric conditions. As part of this application, the objective will be to assess the importance of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) formation in the ozonolysis of the targeted compounds, through further flow reactor studies (France) and in atmospheric simulation chamber (Romania).

The specificity of the partners is the implementation of state-of-art laboratory analysis techniques (HR-ToF-AMS, PTR-MS, SMPS, etc.) for the gas and particulate phases. These tools allow currently a detailed analysis of physical and chemical phenomena.

The requested researchers and (post-) doctoral exchanges will enhance the existing links between partners and contribute to the training of PhD students.

Explicitly, the objectives of the cooperation are:

- Characterize the reactivity of the aimed unsaturated compounds (kinetic and ozonolysis products);

- Assess the contribution of the ozonolysis to the formation of secondary organic aerosols;

- Share the writing of communications and publications.
