Paula

Paula was the first intensivist we had in the PCICU in Edmonton after Emmett’s first surgery. She was there for Emmett while he was on ECMO (life support). It was very scary having him on ECMO as we didn’t know if he would pull through or not. Paula was so kind, sincere, professional and comforting. She reassured us several times that she thought Emmett would be okay and that we would have a baby to take home.

Ronald

Named for the Ronald McDonald House, this place became almost like a second home to us. We spent 24 nights there when the boys were born and then another 36 nights when we were up in Edmonton for Emmett’s first surgery. The RMH provides an amazing affordable facility for families to eat, sleep, engage with other families and practice self care when their child is in the hospital. We will likely be staying in another Ronald McDonald House when we are down at Stanford.

Greenway

Dr. Greenway is Emmett’s Cardiologist. We appreciate his expertise so much! He always takes the time to listen to our concerns and support Emmett in any way possible. He has walked alongside us as we decided that we will do whatever it takes to help our little boy, Emmett. He put in a lot of work to get Emmett down to Stanford and for that we will always be grateful.

Isaac

Isaac was born on March 16 alongside his little twin brother Emmett. Through Emmett’s time in hospital Isaac remained our steady, smiley and easy going baby. He has been a huge blessing to our family and a comfort to us on our tough days with Emmett. Isaac means “He will laugh.” He provides us with so much joy and laughter. Emmett adores Isaac. Therefore, he makes an excellent sidekick to our little heart hero.

Amy

Amy was one of our favorite nurses that Emmett had in the PCICU in Edmonton. We had her as his nurse after his surgery and were lucky enough to have her again after his cardiac cath. Amy was kind and loving. She took great care of my baby boy by bringing Emmett a bear hugger to keep him warm and by altering pajamas so that he could wear clothes around all his lines and cords.

Stanford

When we first learned about Emmett’s heart condition the cardiologist told us that if it was complex there was the option for us to go down to Stanford for surgery. We never thought that would become a reality for our family. However, in July we sat down with our Cardiologist and learned that Edmonton was not comfortable completing another surgery on Emmett. We told him that we were willing to do whatever we needed to for Emmett. At that point he started the process to get us to Stanford where we can see Dr. Hanley, the leading surgeon for Emmett’s condition.

Vjay

On May 8 Emmett unexpectedly went into cardiac arrest in the middle of the night. Vjay was the intensivist in the PCICU who was on that night. It was Vjay who organized the team to keep Emmett’s heart beating, ultimately giving him a second chance at life. At the time we didn’t know who he was but over the next few weeks we got to know him very well and built a great relationship with him.

Laura

For 3 long weeks Emmett was in a room called the ICE room. In the ICE room there were 4 patients divided by curtains with two nurses. Emmett was the most difficult so he got the bed right in front of the nurses desk. The room was dark and loud with 4 sick babies in there. One of the highlights was when Laura was one of the nurses in the room. She was amazing with Emmett. She was one of the few nurses that could settle him and she would come and spend time with him during some of his long crying episodes just to give us a break.
