When you get wizzrobes on the overworld, there are a few things that you can do to help yourself navigate it a bit better
Orange wizzrobes are going to spawn on the tile you are walking on, so if you are needing to navigate a tight screen coming up, transition on a tile you don’t mind them being on if at all possible
Moving on a half tile will make them spawn on the tile above you
Remove all but one of the orange wizzrobes on tight screens with a bomb so that it makes navigating it later much easier
Blue wizzrobes are going to be a pain no matter what you do, but try to stay away from the center of the screen when you transition, as then tend to have patterns that hog that area
Suicide Squad
If you have a tough overworld, and a particular screen is giving you a really hard time, considering clearing all but ONE enemy - this will leave just one there for future trips, making it much easier to navigate. Though it may take some time, it’s probably far better than dying over and over on it.
Block Clips, Ladder Clips and Screen Scrolls
Learning to block clip is extremely important to help avoid clearing bad rooms to access diamond staircases, and it’s pretty easy to learn
Ladder clips are a bit more difficult, but allow you to world wrap and to get through “T” rooms, which can save you time
Screen scrolling is the most difficult to learn, but allows you to make more efficient routes on the overworld and avoid difficult monster screens
Red Candle has some great pictures to help you learn these tricks
While all these things hold true, they will never be required to finish a seed - all seeds are beatable without any of these tricks
Reco the Tooty Flute
There is a static way the Recorder acts when using it, and here’s how it goes:
It starts with you on “1”, whistling right or up will increase this counter by one, whistling down or left will decrease it by one IF you have all the triforces, otherwise it will move to the next dungeon triforce you have acquired
Example: You have Triforces 1, 4 and 7 - if it’s the first time you are using the whistle, you get to Level 7, you would either turn left and use it once (7 < 1), or turn right and use it twice ( 1 > 4 > 7)
The game remembers where you are on the counter, even if you add new triforces
Example: You now have gotten triforce 2, and you want to go back to it later - you are still on “7” on the counter, and would need to use the recorder twice to the right (7 > 1 > 2), or twice to the left (2 < 4 < 7) to get to 2
With the cave shuffle, sometimes the recorder will place you on a screen different, but within one screen of, the dungeon you are whistling to - this is because where the tornado would place you on the Level’s screen would cause a softlock
Roocorder
This is an advanced technique that requires you to blow the recorder and use the ladder to clip onto a water tile on the overworld where you are not normally able to (example are the tiles by the Level 4 raft transition)
This will take you to the screen NORTHWEST of the screen you are trying to whistle to
While this may have limited uses due to the requirements, there may be times when this can be used to your advantage
Efficient Routing
Routing is always going to depend on the start screen, but heading towards the northeast early is, a lot of the time, a good strategy, as it has quite a few open caves and also three of the five armos screens that could contain a free item
Do your best to clear full areas at a time, as backtracking for a cave or two costs a lot of time, though this can be hard to do if bombs aren’t dropping or you can’t find a candle
Take Any Caves and Bomb Shops
Building on the previous note, while hearts are tempting to get to that Magical Sword, unless you’ve seen an early candle shop (that’s cheap at that), it nearly always worth taking a candle from your first Take Any Cave to minimize backtracking
In the same vein, if you have early rupees and run into bombs, it’s probably worth buying bombs if you run into a shop in order to minimize backtracking as well
Burn, Baby, Burn
When trying to navigate difficult screens with choke points, you can use the candle flame to damage boost through them by shooting it behind you and running into the flame. This will knock you back the direction you were wanting to go, and give you some invincibility frames to move through the tough enemies
Hug the Orange
Likewise, if you do not have a candle, and you are faced with getting hit with a red wizzrobe beam, opt to run into the wizzrobe itself - this will only inflict one heart of damage, instead of 4
