Typical Norwegian Sports

Football

Football is a very popular sport in Norway, and according to wikipedia there is approximately 470 500 registered football players in Norway.

We have some football players from Norway that has achieved success and played on teams that is among the worlds best teams, for example:

  • Ada Hegerberg playing for Olympique lyonnais
  • Martin Ødegaard playing for Vitesse, on loan from Real Madrid
  • John Carew played for West Ham
  • John Arne Riise played for Liverpool
  • Stefan Johansen playing for Fulham
  • Maren Mjelde playing for Chelsea LFC
  • Maria Thorisdottir playing for Chelsea LFC

Handball

Handball is also very popular in Norway, and Norway has over the past years made an imprint in handball all over the world. Norway have won both the European championship and the world championship several times, and they have been in the finals three times over the five last world championships.

Famous Norwegian handball players:

  • Heidi Løke playing for the Norwegian national team, IHF player of the year: 2011
  • Nora Mørk playing for the Norwegian national team
  • Katrine Lunde playing for the Norwegian national team, goalkeeper of the word championship: 2017
  • Sander Sagosen playing for the Norwegian national team
  • Bjarte Myrhol playing for the Norwegian national team

Cross-country Skiing

Norway is famous for cross-country skiing, and it has been a Norwegian tradition for more than a thousand years, and therefore Norway has earned the phrase "Norwegians are born with skis on their feet". The reasons behind the saying might be that modern skiing started in Norway, according to Concordia Language villages.

Because of the big interest in skiing, Norway is doing great in the world championship and other championships. There is a lot of famous skiers from Norway, for example:

  • Marit Bjørgen, most winning winter Olympian in history
  • Petter Northug, most winning in Tour de Ski
  • Therese Johaug, Norwegian women athlete of the year: 2016
  • Finn Hågen Krogh from Alta, winning the wolrd championships several times

Leisure

There is a lot of things to do in Norway in the spare time:

  • Sports, for example the ones mentioned above
  • Go to the gym
  • Watch TV, Netflix, and such
  • Hang out with friends
  • Go hiking in our beautiful nature
  • Go fishing, boat trip in our many fjords
  • If you are in the North of Norway, you might be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights
  • Go bathing on a beach or in a lake
