In a study conducted by Lan, Hsiao, and Shih (2018), researchers created friendly and engaging 3D learning environments using Second Life, a virtual-reality platform, aimed at expanding students’ first-language (Mandarin) skills. Students who participated in the study reacted positively to the game-like learning environment. Parents’ reflections further supported the sentiment that using a 3D world to teach vocabulary, pronunciation, and communication skills was an enjoyable experience for the children that noticeably contributed positively to their speaking skills.
