Cabin crew play a vital role in handling of a medical situation arising on-board the aircraft. The following list is the role of cabin crew in a medical situation:
To assess the situation using common sense, good judgment and quick efficiency. This will help to reassure and calm an ill or injured patient/passenger.
Ensure that the ill or injured patient/passenger is as comfortable as possible while ensuring that there is no possibility of aggravating any physical injuries.
Administer any necessary first aid.
Page for medical assistance and supply the doctor or medical professional with the Medical Kit and First-aid Kit(s).
Inform the Captain on the patient’s medical condition and keep him regularly briefed on any improvement or deterioration.
Write complete notes of the incident in the Report of Assistance to passengers as soon as possible in the Passengers and Crew Member Injury and Illness Form.
Cabin Crew are trained as first aiders, they are not considered as nurses or paramedics.
They are not expected to give complicated assistance such as injections.
Cabin Crew first response shall be attending / reassuring the patient never leave unattended.
Cabin Crew shall make announcement seeking professional help from any doctor or qualified nurse – ID's must be checked.
Cabin Crew is not allowed to give passengers medication of any kind, unless adviced by a professional physician.
The only one who can declare death is a professional doctor.
