We all need to feel close and connected to other people, which we call social connection. Sometimes we feel lonely, like we don't have anyone who cares about us or understands us, which may happen even when we are with other people if we don't feel a real bond with them.
Feeling close and connected to others makes us happy and healthy can aid us fight off sicknesses, stay sharp in our minds, and live longer. Feeling lonely and isolated does the opposite; makes us sick, sad, and tired. It will also make us forget things and lose hope.
That's why it's important to keep and grow our social connections, especially when we get older and things change in our lives. We can do this by talking to our family and friends often, joining groups or clubs that like the same things as we do, helping out others who need our help, or getting help from a professional if we feel too lonely. We can use social media to stay in touch with others, but we have to be careful not to use it too much or to feel bad about ourselves when we see what others are doing. The trick is to find a balance between online and offline friends that works for us.
