Self-awareness is a vital skill for any agile coach who wants to help teams and organizations achieve their goals. Being able to recognize and manage one’s own emotions, strengths, weaknesses, biases and development needs. Understand how one’s behavior affects others and how to adapt to different situations and feedback.
As an agile coach, I practice self-awareness by constantly reflecting on my actions, thoughts and feelings. I ask myself questions like: What am I bringing or not bringing to each engagement? How am I facilitating, coaching, mentoring and teaching? What are my assumptions and expectations? How am I influencing or being influenced by others? What are my blind spots and areas for improvement?
I also seek feedback from others, such as my peers, clients, stakeholders and team members. I listen to their perspectives and opinions with an open mind and curiosity. I appreciate their input and use it to learn and grow. I also give feedback to others in a respectful and constructive way.
Self-awareness make me more authentic, flexible and effective as an agile coach. It enables me to align my actions with my values and principles. I do empathize with others and understand their motivations and needs. By being self-aware, I can better serve the teams and organizations I work with and help them achieve their desired outcomes.
