Zeal for Teaching

Ollie L. Jefferson, Ph.D.

I genuinely love coaching and instructing students. Over the years, I have worked as a communication studies professor at colleges and universities. During class, students see my excitement and frequently share how much they have grown. They have expressed their gratitude for the courses as one of my public speaking students at the University of Maryland at College Park. I was honored as she presented me with a trophy and shared with the class why I am deserving of the award. Her thoughtful speech and presentation confirmed my zeal for teaching and academic excellence.

Verified students across campuses have routinely given my official faculty course evaluations high marks with an average overall grade of 3.85/4. It was heartwarming to hear my George Mason University students' applause of appreciation before leaving the classroom for them to complete my evaluation at the end of the semester. I gave them a curtsey and left smiling. Teaching does not end in the classroom as a mere academic exercise. My students are mentored and advised to use the knowledge gained during the course as practical skills and techniques to transform their lives as expressed below:

Hi Prof. Jefferson,

I just had to tell you this story. I do not know if you remember seeing me in the hall one day while you were on your way to the classroom and I told you I was on my way to the counselor. I was in fact on my way to see the counselor but I was on my way to drop(ping) interpersonal communication class. I said to myself unless God shows me a sign of why I should not drop this class, I'm doing it now. I think God sent you to block me from doing that...I just wanted to thank you for all of your patience and understanding. You are the rare teacher who actually kept the majority of the class through to the end. That says a lot about who you are.

Warmest regards,

Stephanie

Stephanie was having challenges in balancing full-time employment and higher learning. She later explained that remaining in the course was due to my encouragement. Stephanie completed the interpersonal course with excellence. She expressed appreciation for my applicable course sessions, which led to her work promotion to a supervisory position with a salary increase.

I love to witness growth in the classroom, as seen by one of my shy college students. This quiet and tall student entered the course with his head hung low. He hid in his bulky coat and long hair during his initial speech delivery. One of my pedagogical practices is to assign chapter presentations to build students’ confidence and immediately provide them with practical feedback on Blackboard or Canvas. After a while, I noticed the student asking questions and incorporating my instructions into his assignments. For example, I often suggest students coordinate their attire and visual aid colors, as demonstrated during my lectures. He implemented my recommendations by taking off his coat and projecting his voice as he stood before the class. He delivered a dynamic visual and oral presentation in professional attire at the end of the semester. He also cut his hair into a professional style, which was not one of my recommendations, but he developed self-expression and self-esteem during our human communication course. He transformed as he developed self-confidence throughout the semester.

I have taught thousands of students and received cards and messages expressing how much they appreciated my lectures, as shown below:

Hello Dr. Jefferson,

I hope you're doing well! My name is Tahiyat Sheikh. I'm a graduating senior at Howard, and I took your Principles of Speech class...As I mentioned earlier, I'll be graduating this semester, so before I graduate, I wanted to email and acknowledge some of the people that had a lasting impact on my time at Howard. You're probably wondering what kind of impact you had on me, seeing that I only had you for a semester. But it was your class that forced me out of my comfort zone to speak in front of others. I had public speaking experience prior to your class, but the continued practice that your class reinforced really prepared me for the countless presentations and engagements that were to come. Because of the various speeches that you had us do, I am now able to deliver a cohesive and comprehensive oration on pretty much anything. It was a treat to hear you speak, and I am forever grateful for the education you provided me.

Warmest regards,

Tahiyat Sheikh
