This page shares media coverage about the Old Wakefield School property and provides clarification when information has been misunderstood.
Our goal is to keep the community fully informed with facts, official documents, and respectful responses.
In August 2025, the Low Down to Hull & Back News published an article titled “Old school, new hangout”.
While the article raised awareness about the property, it also contained misunderstandings about zoning and ownership, which unfortunately created confusion and resentment toward the owners.
Our Clarification:
The property is not abandoned. It is under private ownership, with active management, security, and planning for redevelopment.
The zoning was officially changed from institutional to residential. This decision was made by the Municipality of La Pêche, not by the owners.
The buildings are not safe for public entry. Trespassing is illegal, and we are working with police and the municipality to ensure public safety.
The future of the site is being carefully considered, with professional planners, technical studies, and consultation with local authorities.
We recognize that rumors and misinformation can harm community trust. That is why we are committed to sharing accurate updates here, directly with residents.
📄 Letter to the Municipality (August 2025) – Requesting written confirmation of zoning and safety obligations.
📄 Pending Response – Once received, will be posted here for community review.
We understand the community’s concerns and value constructive input. This page will always provide:

We would like to provide clarification regarding the article “Old school, new hangout” published in the Low Down to Hull & Back News (August 2025).
The article, while raising awareness of the property, unfortunately created some misunderstandings about the status of the Old Wakefield School.
Ownership & Zoning: The property is privately owned and has been legally rezoned from institutional (school use) to residential by the Municipality of La Pêche. This change was made by the municipality, not by the owners.
Condition & Safety: The site is not abandoned. It is under active management with security measures in place. However, the buildings are not safe for public entry. For everyone’s protection, we ask that residents respect the “no trespassing” notices.
Future Plans: The owners are working with professional planners, engineers, and the municipality on a phased redevelopment plan. Our long-term vision is to balance new housing with preservation of green space, while respecting the history of the school.
We appreciate the community’s interest in the property and understand concerns that arise when information is unclear. Our commitment is to share accurate updates, official documents, and project milestones with the public through our official channels, including our website.
We hope this clarification will help restore trust and direct attention to the real future opportunities this site can bring to Wakefield.
Sincerely,
Owners of 20 chemin des Caves
